It's not absolutely necessary. When you look at the earlier works of BeksiƄski you'll notice that he never properly studied anatomy or perspective - he just made a lot of shitty paintings, and he kept making them until he get good enough.

That being said, most professional illustrators will recommend learning how to draw before learning how to paint - learning fundamentals (like anatomy, perspective, composition etc) can be done just as well with pencils, while being easier, faster and cheaper.
>>
It is much cheaper to learn to draw, pencils and paper are quite cheap, while paint and whatever you will paint on can be quite expensive, and one uses a lot of paper/canvas and paint when learning.
>>
Learn to mix paint before you can draw, then paint. Joking slightly.
>>
It depends on what you mean by drawing. Drawings are just simplified paintings so no, you need to learn how to paint before you can make finished drawings. But you do need to learn draughtsmanship to paint.

Painting is drawing so yes, theyre not seperate things
>>
Its actually recommended to paint before drawing to get rid of your line dependency and see subjects as 3dimensional forms. Though this could also be done in certain sketch or drawing techniques. If you are going to paint, dont immediatly jump into difficult colors but start with focussing on shades only by picking one or two colors max.

Not him, but it's just generally good advice. Mind you, if you only want to draw cute anime girls, just symbol draw away

As with everything in art - it depends. Lots of modern workflows rely on first making a drawing and then coloring it in some way or painting over it.
Actually in historic wet-on-dry oil painting with all the layering and shit proper underdrawing is pretty important too.

I think learning how to draw first is important for many artist because...it's just easier if you pre-draw your paintings, especially if you also map values first. Sketch drawing with pencil or graphite can be changed pretty easily, paint is less forgiving. Also it's pretty nice effect if you show f.e. ink lines alongside your paint.

On the other hand, having other media than your paint on canvas/paper might be very undesirable. And really, drawing itself has little to do with painting and can reinforce in you thinking in lines while what you really want to have while painting is thinking with shapes. You also don't learn about edge control while drawing which is fucking huge deal for painting.

So really - it depends. If you start drawing with graphite it's easier to transition into painting. You can also take middle ground and start your adventure with art with some kind of brushpen or painting with ink.

And by middle ground I mean taking a hardcore and unforgiving road.

Are you trying to imply that form and value can only be indicated via painting?

I'm not sure how good you are if drawing inherently involves symbols in your mind. You can indicate volume, form, texture etc. very well with just pen and paper, let's not even get into graphite.

There isn't anyone on the planet who has good fundamentals but can't draw. Telling beginners to paint before drawing will just result in a bunch of botched works with nothing supporting them.

Depends on who you talk to, and what kind of painting you're doing. If you want to do realistic, lifelike paintings like Alma Tadema or Bougerreau, you'll need very, very strong draftsmanship skills. But if you want to paint more impressionist, the drawing skills are less important, and a lot of painters block out with shapes and color, not line.

It's an eternal debate, and it's up to you to decide what's best for you. If you want to focus entirely on painting, then drawing will be less important, but you should have the basics of form and perspective and things like that.

This. Painting is just another medium, so you can learn to paint before drawing. But drawing is way cheaper.

I will say that painters might have an easier time learning how to see forms rather than symbols. If this image speaks to you, it might be worth it to pick up some cheap paints, or even cheaper, just try this out digitally.

Don't listen to him. It arises from some tonalist school of thought or something similar that says lines are bad, even though greater masters from the past use lines in their drawings from the very beginning of their training all throughout their career.
