What I recently found is that you need to become aware of the areas between the individual features, the context.
We far too often draw eyes, mouth and nose just pinned on the frontal plane, but that vastly limits our range of expression.

A solution is to find refs that force you to place features within context, such as wide lens portraits, way-over-the-top silly expressions or faces in motion, like getting hit, blown into, pushed or pulled.
You can always pull the expression back to achieve what you want.

Learning about form and general anatomy of the human face first is obviously a necessity.

don't go perfectly symmetrical with the expression
the whites of the eyes can make or break it
Don't always show the teeth, can look bambooni
angle the expression with the tilt of the head or the direction they're looking
try to hide the mouth, if the expression still comes through without seeing the mouth you've got a good expression.
There are 3 parts of the eyebrows.
try to curve the lips in and out
The direction the eyes look show what they're thinking
the edge of the mouth changes based on the expression.
The slightest curve to the edge of a line on the mouth can completely change their face
