Well, I use paint tool sai. I use a sketchy brush, the convert it to binary mode, and slightly lower the opacity, which makes the lines kind of dissapear in less dark parts.

Paintings are just a stylization of the real world. They're no different from lines in that way. You can't paint reality no matter how much you try.

Lines have a different purpose and different thinking behind them than painting. However paintings are drawings as well: they have drawing fundamentals applied to them. The medium is just different.

I can tell you now that there is not a painter in the world who has solid fundamentals but little drawing skill.

I took a picture of myself as reference for the arms, but they just won't come out right. Doesn't help that the musculature of the model and the picture's subject are very different.

The indication of overlap and squeeze is what I can't nail. Feel free to draw over this, and point out mistakes in general.

She has T-Rex arms. Elbows are supposed to reach to the end of her ribcage, wrists at the crotch, fingertips halfway down her thigh. If we extend her arms properly, they wouldn't reach.

The linework is a bit sloppy. Pick a style, and stick to it. Either fully render it and paint it, removing all lines. Or make nice clean weighted lines.

Same for the rendering. The style of render you're trying to go for doesn't suit your lines. Look at pic related, and study it. It's a style similar to what you're trying to go for, but with much better execution. Pay attention to the linework most of all. Replicate it. And notice how well it blends with the smooth rendering.

Okay, so I know what you said earlier in the discord about wanting to solve the problem without being shown, but there's still the issue of the missing mass behind her left knee.

The way you have it, it looks like her thigh is paper thin and folds over the other leg. That's not right. Imagine a big sausage is draped over instead of the leg and imagine the form dropping behind.

I just quickly drew out what I think it should look like and illustrated the issue, if you want to see it I'll post it in the discord when I wake up.

Very little of this drawing makes sense, from the poor relationship of grounded points to the ground plane, to the improbable posture of the legs, to the incorrect cross contouring of the striped socks, to the poorly executed foreshortening on the feet.

Stop reworking this image and start fresh, focusing purely on the pose. Make this pose yourself, and note how the legs and feet are tilted, where they make contact with each other, and where there is space. Don't advance the drawing until you get the posture right. Set aside aesthetic, fetishy considerations and nail the technicals first.

I didn't say that. But look at how advanced his other areas of his art is in comparison. He's not putting effort into studying his fundamentals at all and it shows because that picture is evident he has very poor knowledge of them.
At this point he should be focusing on that instead of personal work, it should be his priority. His skill is suffering due to the fact he didn't learn this stuff first and spent too much time on imaginative work. Now he's tricking his brain in to not seeing the faults because other areas seem ok to him. The fact he could not see how utterly fucked up those hips were but had knowledge on lighting says it all.
There is a balance. It's not bad advice at all, it's one that will actually help him to improve.

hey guys, total beginner here but i thought you might help me better than /beg/. I'm trying my hands at a character turnaround, but am having troubles in stylizing the character. I don't want to overdo it since i'm not confident i can cartoonize enough without creating a monster, but i'm really having a hard time figuring out how to approach stylization for something like this. Blindly working on proportions doesn't seem to gather great result.
Is there some kind of way to tackle this with method or is it all "feel"?

You need to study anatomy, thats the most glaring problem. But something more concrete would be improving the way you draw breasts. They really do not look good, especially the nipples. You should check out some other artists because man do pepperonis as nipples turn me off.

The head and face though, really looks good, for a half normie like me anyways. Also props for not shading with grey.

gotta make it even softer on the eyes bro, it's totally got too much detail especially for a style approach like that. Fuck those boob details, you don't need em. Matter of fact, fuck ALL those line details, the boob lines, those lines going down the middle of the shirt, the jean lines on the left leg, the pocket and crotch, and the defined legs too, fuck all that. Keep it simple and let shallow, streamlined shapes do the work. I don't usually like altering people's work but I felt compelled this time. Hope you don't mind. Oh and about those lines going down the shirt, you gotta make sure whatever you put on your clothing, it reflects other parts of the outfit. The biggest icons around the shirt are the collar, cuffs, and that shit hangin at the bottom, so...you gotta design something that reflects those icons...something just as weighted and simple as them...in my instance I chose buttons

You should not dive into colors if your anatomy as well as your ability to draw faces is sub par.
The line art didn't look good and the colors don't make it any better. It might be fun to color things, but at this stage there is no point other than its fun, because with a bad line art it will always look like crap.

Lat but not least, HER LEFT HAND DUDE. If we are seriously seeing the back of the hand than it is the wrong way. You put a right hand on her left arm. If we aren't seeing the back then you should look up how to draw hands because that does not look like it.

The coloring's not bad, it's just kind of generic and boring. There doesn't seem to be any specific mood you're going for. Don't be afraid to exaggerate and stylize your colors, throw in extra hues in your shadows/highlights, and push your shadows. Deciding on a color scheme from the start and limiting your choices of main hues also helps.

...Shouldn't. You symbol drew your own version of an anime head, which has no concept of forms, instead of studying the pic.
Drawing skulls teaches forms, but wouldn't help you because you'd symbol draw those too.
Read the sticky and do the upside down stravinsky exercise to break your symbol drawing, then you can go about constructing heads from a reference.

Most of the time on /ic/ you're going to get the answer you weren't looking for. That doesn't mean they're dodging the question.

i just start with big shapes, like every painter does. I did not use lines and tried to define every edge. U should let your brush strokes do the job sometimes. Usually for the shadows i change hue, saturation, and darkness too, it helps a lot
