Bright colors get old fast, so stick with mostly neutral colors

This creates some very pleasant contrasts, actually! Perhaps ad just a taaad more grey to the wall color so it's not so intense it competes with the red and it should work well.

You've got bigger problems than choosing colours. Post some floorplans or pics of the existing room.
