In "How to Render" Scott Robertson tackles that. I am on my mobile and can't post it now, but basically you need to adjust your values first via that levels tool in Photoshop because not every color hue exists in every value.

Basically you draw with higher contrasts and value range, and then make shifts more subtle for coloring.
