>follower I don't know DMs me showing off their own art saying "look what I made"
Should I feel like an asshole for feeling somewhat annoyed by this
Also I bet if I compliment it they'll most likely keep doing it

don't alienate potential fans
dont let them exploit you either, though

it's probably just some kid who looks up to you, a simple "hey, good work, keep it up" would make their day
tho if you wanna avoid the chance of them trying to segue the DM into more conversation here's the cool person strat: don't respond at all to their dm, just go to their page, find a post of some art they made and like it, then just leave it at that

when I was younger (around 16 to 18) I made some youtube animations
I would get pms from people all the time of people wanting to voice act for me.
It was annoying as fuck but they were my fans.
I either responded with a polite no or just ignored them.
Tl;dr
just learn to ignore them

>non-follower I don't know DMs me a book they've written
>tells me to edit it. It's like 200k words long
>they say they like my work but show no indication they've even looked at it before
>I give a few suggestions on their book intro, because I'm a pushover
>they never speak to me again
>????????????

A Japanese man messages me with infrequent regularity, in simple English, inquiring if I like girls.
The head writer of a certain cartoon contacted me because he was apparently enthusiastic about something I drew. But when I tried to send a short reply to him, I found I was blocked from his account. I can only surmise between the time he sent me the message and I composed my response, he browsed the rest of my account and saw all the porn.
A mangaka I admired a great deal and in silence contacted me out of the blue, apologizing for posting a similar drawing. It was only a coincidence. Now we keep in regular contact, not to talk art but mainly to trade pirated videos.
You should read Harold Bloom's The Anxiety of Influence. The problem essentially is that influence exists and once it's expressed it's finished, but will continue to undergo permutations. The Spanish academic artists would study paintings for long hours in training and of course that is exactly how Picasso finished his career. In illustration, could there have been a Walt Disney without a Caran D'Ache? http://www.dogbreedsinfo.eu/why-does-my-dog-shed.php

You know, if you just respond nicely the first time, even if they end up being encouraged to message you more afterwards, you can just ignore any further DM and they'll probably leave it at that, thinking you're really busy or something but they'll still think you're a nice guy because you replied that first time.
Being a dick to random strangers is pretty much in every situation inferior to just being nice.
