I've been following you for a while on Instagram. You have a lot of great work and I'm always happy to see your work pop up in my feed. I've been meaning to say this though:

I can't help but think that all you're doing is endlessly creating personal work that is taking you nowhere. Do you have any career aspirations? You're obviously good enough to start getting work in the fantasy/sci-fi/concept art field, but your entire Artstation and Instagram is filled with half-done "studies" and sketches. Why? What's holding you back from achieving something career-wise?

My comments are of course assuming you ultimately would like to get paid for your work, but if it's all just for fun, then disregard this message.

Lamia technically.

I'd wanted to make a centaur, DM said it'd have to be Medium instead of Large. Originally I thought "okay, pony-taur" but then got it into my head to use a large cat as a base. When I told the DM about it he goes, "Oh you mean a lamia!"

Been having some fun trying to figure out the logistics of how she works though.

Just a rough.

Revision of the red hooded girl. A lot of the criticism I got from the original is that she looked too much like the chick from RWBY, so I changed her costume around a bit, gave it a more metal edge, with some goth lolita elements tossed in. I also added the chain and blade to her weapon, to give her more ways to use the wheel as a weapon.

Just for context, this is a character for a fighting game roster.

I think I like this a lot better. It reads much better with the solid colors, while still retaining a similar silhouette.

Same context, this one I've posted around a bit more. It's been met with a lot of positive reception. The Toku influence is intentional.

I feel it's not FULLY there yet, but almost. This is the 2nd draft on this character, it's much better than the original. I like the way the colors read, but I feel there's a bit too much clutter in certain areas.

People have taken well to the jacket look too, and I like it as well, but it doesn't seem to work well with the scarf (too busy), and I feel the scarf is much more important for his design, as he is meant to pay homage. Plus, the jacket makes combat poses more difficult to read in his case.

I think some people might have seen this one, I've posted it around before. This one was quite popular. Another one that I think is 90% there. It just needs that final... umf.

I did make one change however, I changed her skin tone from that pale white, to a more natural skin color, and it worked out well. I think it reads much better that way. I simply haven't gotten around to giving her a proper pose yet though.

Also, just as an aside as well, some context would really help in giving out proper critique. Imo, design has to serve a purpose, so what might work for something, might not work for something else. It's hard to say is some designs could or couldn't work if we're not given much context. Otherwise, we're just saying whether we like the visual appeal of something, and outside of color, scheme, shape language, and silhouette, that's pretty much entirely subjective.

Not to single you out on this either, it's mostly for everyone ITT. I'm just at a loss for what I could tell you in terms of design without some solid context. And I feel "looks good" and leaving it at that is selling you guys short in what could be some decent direction.

The design looks fucking great dude, it's super nostalgic. You're right about the jacket, it looks nice but I'd say it only works in a resting pose. I'd say with the clutter you could do with reducing the amount of segments of the breastplates/codpiece. It's a little more noticeable on the white than the brown but if you're gonna change it I'd match the proportions of the segements on the brown anyway. Have you tried adding more white to the back btw? I don't know if it'll make it better but might be worth a try. Apart from that keep up the good work : )

Design student here, adding my two cents.

I think the problem I see most in these threads is the fact that you aren't really "designing" anything at all.

Design is a problem solving method, using visual communication.

Art is the expression of emotion in visual communication.

Good design occurs when you answer a contextual problem regarding a certain set of latent needs or "pain points". These are contextual constraints that allow you to develop a realistic character through the characters needs.

He's from a desert planet? He has goggles and a face mask for the sand, his gun is wrapped in cloth, or the barrel is fluted to stop sand jamming the bolt.

She's from the future? Look at current and up-and-coming tech, and integrate that to make it believable.

And honestly the most important part is iteration, you drawing one character once is not character design, it's a sketch.
