I can't keep away from samefacing when I draw anime, but Is it really bad if I do? I've tried the le use different features XD thing and it just turns into tumblr style art, I've gotten shit from samefacing but popular artists like kr0n / sakimi / zer0nis get away with it all the goddamn time time
also hyanna-natsu basically just ripped off the kyoani moeshit style and is making big bucks with nobody complaining
it's not fair bros

This post says everything that's wrong with you, you're ngmi.
Sketch for my first fanart piece in a good while
>>2996025
but why
These fucking details are killing me already.
>>2996022
Most mainstream anime styles are based on all the characters having identical and rigid facial features.
Finding ways to convey personality and emotion through facial expressions and body language should be your true challenge. It's also not something any of the artists you mentioned are very good at, which imo contributes far more to their art looking "samey".

>>2996055
I think your drawing is too rigid. Probably too late to correct at this stage, but even characters comprised of (mostly) robotic or solid parts should have some "bounce" to them. A good mix of straights, C and S curves to emphasize flow keeps things interesting, even if your character is wearing armor or has robot hands.
Interesting butt design to say the least.
>>2996715
This color would work better on a smaller, less detailed (and more controlled) drawing. Here it kinda gets lost because there's so much going on over a wide area, and it's hard to make out.

>>2996795

>>2996796
I love it anon, but honestly >>2994634 version is significantly better and here's why -
You used straights on her chest and raised her shoulders which makes her expression more uptight (better). You also have better hand gestures and the fabric of her skirt has more thickness and weight to it. Her butt is popped out more and reveals her thighs better.
The final drawing is better rendered, but lost some of its former gesture and appeal.
To prevent this, never trace your sketch, but rather use it as a guide. Always retain the emotion and mood of your drawing, even when inking.
That being said I really like the piece, keep up the good work.
>>2994860
I had the same problem, so I scanned the paper texture I used to work on, used it as an underlay and got the most grainy pencily kind of brush I could find. It helps at least for the period of getting cozy with your tablet.
>>2995169
Looks like a paper cut-out.
You have to change your way of thinking from symbols to form drawing and to achieve that, you need drawabox, loomis, dynamic sketching and so on, not a redline.
can't decide on whether or not to continue with this or scrap

>>2996883
I have humor of a 12 year old.
The thing is her butt looks like a nutsack. I'm not sure how to help you with this, probably just look at some actual butt, draw the pelvis first, realize that it's just two muscles and a bit of fat, there's nothing that would hold it in space like this.
>>2996910

I like it a lot, but the face sticks out like a sore thumb. Too simple to my liking
Everything else is appealing though, nice shapes and colors.
>>2997043
thanks! i looked at some AJ Casson paintings for some colour reference and pumped up the contrast/saturation a bit once i was done with it. the actual process is in the drawthread:
>>2994405
>>2995965
>>2996742
>>2997048
that's fair, at least the contrast helps it stand out, though! i might go back in and add some more depth to it, it is a little distracting.
>>2996926
I wanted to include all my points in a redline, but compared to your sketch I ended up butchering the gesture even more. Oh well.
Though what I think looks better in mine are hands and the skirt.
With hands, reference this >>2994634, you managed beautiful silhouettes there, so keep that and offset the fingers a bit so they don't look like sausages.
I tried to make the hair a bit less flowing to make her look more embarrassed, but now I'm not sure whether it's working.
Anyways, good luck with the drawing and have a nice day.

>>2997099

seems a bit scatterbrained though. there is no real focus value wise. you want the character to stand out a bit more.
the face kinda stands out by itself, but so does the tree in the front. and the backpack just melts into the trees. dunno.
>>2997037
Nice composition but the face is terrible, it's so jarring with the rest of the picture. If you were to actually make it detailed and make it match the rest of the image it would be a nice piece for your portfolio.

Worked on this a bit more. I plan to add more details, but how is the pose? What is off?
>>2997193
at a glance id say the right this is a little thin, the right foot is a little out of perspective with the leg as well as the left foot, the right hand looks strange like its 180 degrees flipped. really nice linework tho.
>>2997193
The pose looks okay, maybe just a bit boring. If you can sketch some 3D forms already, you can use those to build your pose. After the construction is erased, the sense of volume remains.
>>2997131
I may be a beginner, but what's wrong with the box analogy that makes you think I should avoid redlining people?
>>2997259
whoops just noticed how messed the legs are, my bad.
>5 days since I last drew something other than gesture

Working on this for the last 30 mintues, I've been watching One Piece like a homo and like the idea of pirates. I gotta fix the left shoulder and the left leg a bit.
>>2997280
>You completely fucked up the proportions on the right arm too. Whoops!
I'd ask you for a redline, but if you think box construction is a meme, it's safe to assume you can't draw for shit.

>>2997355
>upper arm longer than forearm
i shortened the forearm when it was pointed out before. is the upper arm still too long?
thanks for pointing the stuff out, though.
>>2997383
I guess I'll need you to elaborate. It's supposed to be exaggerated.
Already doing the gym thing btw, thanks for thinking of my health.
>>2997383
forgot helpful red lines
>>2997383
Other than the foreshortening on the closer arm. That's glaring at me right now.
>>2997386
exaggeration is all well and good but you oversimplified the musculature
look how flat the chest on yours was compared to how actual pecs bulge
you caved in the entire left side of the torso too
also it kind of works on an exaggerated design but forearms should be longer than upper arms:
>>2997387
>>2997396
That helps tons!
I see what you mean right leg left leg is going to be a peg. I should really do more study than I do currently. It's just sooooooo boring.
>>2997400
If doing straight-up studying is too hard then just use a reference when making the art you want to make, though that can really slow down the work flow.
You can learn a surprising amount from observing the thing without ever drawing the thing too.
>>2997383
i see what you mean. Made the forearm a bit longer this time.
It's been years since I've touched a tablet. This is incredibly hard. I can produce better lines, but just can't be bothered on sketches. Maybe I should.
Any thoughts?
>>2997396
>it kind of works on an exaggerated design but forearms should be longer than upper arms
unless you're talking in reference to foreshortening the upper arm towards the viewer in that very specific angle of that image, then no, the forearm is slightly shorter than the upper arm. if you bend your arm up all the way so that the hand is near your shoulder you'll see your wrist comes in just below the shoulder, tho one of the trickiest things to keep in mind in regard to proportions is that the length of two appendages that connect at a joint overlap to varying degrees based on the type of joint they share.
>>2997410
> Made the forearm a bit longer this time.
are you rusing me
>>2997157
>>2997190
>>2997146
well, i didn't think the face was quite that bad! i'll figure something out to fix it, lol. and you;re right about the values, i'll reel in some of the values on the trees and punch up the character a bit more. the backpack blending in was intentional, but maybe i overdid it. thanks for the feedback!
>>2997370
if you're gonna exaggerate it's usually better to try and go overboard on your first pass! you can always dial it down after wards, and going crazy and being loose can help you discover things you never would have thought of otherwise. studies may seem boring when you're starting out, but try to think of them as just opportunities to make new and interesting drawings! draw a bunch of crocodiles, then when you go to draw a crocodile pirate you'll be able to use what you learned from those sketches to build a more convincing and dynamic design instead of a muscular person with a vague lizard head. it's like looking over the rules to a cool board game, if you don't read them then you'll never get to play!
>>2997415
Huh. Well, at a 90~ degree angle the lengths of the inside edges of the forearm-wrist and upper arm-shoulder are actually about equal. Shorter forearm all the way up, longer all the way down.
Made me go grab a ruler to test it.
>>2997421
WOW your quick gator is very cute, you gots a bloag?
>>2997423
trust me, from a stylistic point of view it's best to keep the forearm slightly shorter than the upperarm unless you're doing foreshortening or some character design thing where you can make a longer forearm not look weird (say a humanoid with wing arms maybe)
>>2997355
Stop shitting up the thread you stupid cunt
>>2997417
christ, people who can't draw really shouldnt be giving advice
>>2997467
Fixed some of the temporary shading because why not.
I made this about a month ago. To be honest after a while i began wondering what people really thought of it. It got likes, but i wanna get a fair critique of this.
Better yet, I want to hear what i couldn't see in this drawing. What was colored wrong? Are the lines dirty? and etc..
>>2997495
To be honest the face is pretty ugly and the head looks sort of dislocated from the body. It's like there's no neck and the right shoulder it too far forward?
I mean there's not much to say. It's a chibi. It's too simple a subject matter.
>>2997500
It was a request that someone asked for.
>Draw any character as close as possible to the style of EarthBound.
>>2997495
Style clash, the wings are too detailed compared to the rest of the drawing
>>2997421
I've been thinking of making a pirate crew for a bit and though mine was pretty nifty. I got a 3 day weekend. I'm gonna fucking practice.
>>2997508
And the Tunic too!
>>2997505
The difference being that earthbound faces are cute, the one in your drawing isn't.
Yours has a huge nose and mouth, the earthbound characters have small features instead. The proportions aren't the same so it looks ugly as a result. Use a reference next time.
>>2997508
Disagree. The wings are sloppy, look at the lineart, it's sketchy and unfinished looking. I'd say the hair is the thing that stands out, it looks like time was spent on it while everything else was rushed (just look at the feet).
>>2997514
FINALLY someone saw it!
Thanks for the critique!
>>2997514

Man I sure do love it when my children have dark soulless eyes that even light can't reflect off of... when they have arms longer than their legs and have little to no neck. Eyebrows! Pfft who needs those?
Can you do like a edit comparing them because I don't see how >>2997495 face is bigger than your reference.
Maybe I'm blind.
>>2997514
Okay yup I can see why the face looks less cute. Not using a reference to draw this wasn't the best idea, but i wanted to try and see if i could get it close without looking.

okay so I made some changes to the arm based on what you told me.
probably shouldnt paint this turd
I'm working on this one.
Have to clean up the foreground rendering before I finish the characters. It's just a basic sketch for now.
Working within the constraints of a photographic scene is interesting... I used the tiles as a grid and the half-wall for scale.
Unless there's huge errors that I can't see, clothes and colors are next...
Anyone have an artwork that was shared on IC a while ago? It was pretty nice it was manga style in a cool village with cute cat girls walking around it and it was on water.

>>2999183
you know jace, first time i've seen your art (few years ago) i didn't think you used reference, but now i'm sure that you do and suddenly your work doesn't seem as impressive
but it's still lovely. i miss your old rendering though.
>>2999183
How do you do hair so well, how are the bodies so well, it's just lines.
>>2999229
I hate to like... be the one to tell you this but every professional artist uses reference.
I do not copy from a single photo like kr0n [pic related] and the like. He takes a photo and just copies it in manga form.
The way I work, I normally, I sketch out and try to get it as good as I can from imagination and then I go through my reference folders to find photos similar to what I have sketched out. This could be a dozen reference images for just one pose. I might find an image for the hands, another for the hair, another for the face, one for the colors, one for the general lighting, and another for the legs.
>>2999229
>>2999297
Here are the images I had for these.
There is a lllotttt of stuff that I have to fill in the blanks with. Even then, the image on the left is nearly all just from my imagination since the hair is all I really used that iamge for.
>>2999270
For the bodies, I focus more on the overall contours rather than anatomy/muscles/skeleton. I treat the human body more like a height map.
Hair just takes time. A llooottttt of time.
>>2999310
>I treat the human body more like a height map.
Can you explain more on this?
>>2999270
Not him, but something I notice about his art style is there's a lot of "implied" forms. You basically hint at a form without actually drawing out all of it, and let the brain fill in the gaps. Notice how delicately the inner surfaces are handled in his drawings - almost all of it is imagined space, with the bare minimum of lines needed to guide the eye.
This is obviously only possible with a good knowledge of form and anatomy, but when done right, it creates a very visually pleasant effect.
another one
>>2998596
the dof is just for comp planning purposes before coloring and done on separate layer from everything else. in hindsight i should have just lowered the opacity for background instead
>>2999319
Aww, thanks anon. That's one of the nicest thing anyone has said to me in a lloooonnnggg timmmeeee.
I take a lot of inspiration from Charles Dana Gibson when it comes to line/ink work. The more details you put in, the harder and harsher the subject looks, so if you want to paint a pretty lady you want to keep the lines to a minimum.
>>2999318
Kinda like this. I'll draw all the contours of the body based on the form and then go back and keep only the lines which have the sharpest incline.
>>2999270
This is how I generally construct the hair.
The sketches I posted though are super rough.
>>2999183
left is super CUTE

>>2999331
holy shit this construction is way over my head
>>2999161
That shading was the result of me leaving the sketch layer on, you think it looks better with it?
>>2999150
Ah yeah, those got all muddled as I painted. I tried to scale them back now,
>>2999331
Thanks for sharing a bit of your know-how, it's worth gold.
It's been a long while d/ic/ks

Gigantic head
>>2999688
it's called style
Any critique?
>>2999725
The general form of the head is nice. The features of the head feel pasted on the form, it would be nice if you could shape that general form in such a way that the features also have some form. I don't know what's happening with the body.
I can't get the arms/hands right on this even when I keep redrawing them, left forearm is way too short too
>>2999297
that's a smart way to do it, but personally i couldn't bother to spend so much time to look through hundreds of photos to find one that resembles my sketch.
maybe you just got used to it.
>>2999633
Muddy colors, clash of different styles. Do more photo studies.
Other than that, it's pretty nice.
>all those /v/ tier threads
What's happened to /ic/? It's real trash hole now.
>>3000076
Cause you draw nothing
>>2999728
Thanks. And you're not wrong, I drew a sphere and pasted stuff on top of it. But isn't that the whole point of the Loomis method? Or am I not understanding it?
Where is Andrae? He nuked all his blogs
>>3000079
Eyes aren't flat: they're spheres covered in skin. Thus, they bulge.
I'd advise looking at Reiq's eye tutorial.
>>3000087
I see his name in some discord servers so he's not dead.
>>3000096
>Reiq's eye tutorial
Thank you for this, really good stuff.
>>3000103
is he active or what?
Hello.
I'd like to step out of the dirty ink drawings pit I've fell into and leap up onto refined, stylized cute chubbies/muscled male lewds... but I have barely any idea where would I go for that exactly!
>>3000293
your proportions are fucked
>>3000307
You have talent, but bad taste.
>>3000314
true
>>3000314
inb4 poppy fag.
>>3000301
Like it ever pays off! Thinking of proportions had always made my stuff look so dead I'd rather discard it.
Though, this issue would most likely cause troubles on the way to my goal indeed. Then again, I've gotta get a way out of those stiff, creepy still-standing models with eyes all over their faces!
resize the wolf.
>>3000320
>Thinking of proportions had always made my stuff look so dead I'd rather discard it.
Then you aren't doing it right you fucking idiot; learn gesture too. Is your goal to stop being a fucking idiot? It should be.
In any case you should be in /beg/, not here.
>>3000293
The arms and legs are completely fucked son
The hat isn't even sitting on her head right
>>3000293
Nesskain
>>3000286
Any critiq on this would be appreciated btw
>>3000293
Your loli has gorilla arms and should pull her skirt up, but I like your style.
>>3000307
right arm is floating
head looks like it was supposed to be in 3/4th but you fucked the eyes the goggles and the ears
>>3000329
ass on top left looks really flat, like, caved in
nipples too low and close together on bottom middle
>>3000340
>forget about proportions for the sake of lively gesture
do your limbs warp crush and bend every time you pose in real life? No, but you're no less lively.
>when the redline is shittier than the original
this is particularly bad with the weebs here
Thoughts?
just see my fault, so i change the wolf for jinx
starting on this for now
Not sure what to do about the visor's design/pattern.
>>3000516
Looking cool so far, though I'm not sure what's going on with the face. I hope to see more WIPs of this

Clean up your shapes and don't overcomplicate your lighting. Stop making life harder for yourself by using brushes with opacity settings when doing a block in.
>>2999307
blog?
>>3000789
Why isn't this getting delete like the other child porn pic
>>3000340
>How can people tell that at a glance?
Something that comes with experience.
It might help if you flip your canvas/look at it through the mirror every once in a while. Can you see how fucked the hat is now simply because it's mirrored?
hows this? I know I fucked up on both hands
>>3000896
Looks off balance. Her left leg needs to be over more.
Also skirts don't work like that
>>3000901
Ok, I think get where I messed up on the leg. For the Skirt are you saying the opening should be facing away right? Also thanks
nothing is coming out right today... is this as shit as it looks to me?
What the fuck
>>2998796
>that nose
Consider, perhaps, pic related, and the fact that you need to actually study Loomis/the head in general unironically
>>3000896
Trash this and start over, you have no idea what you're doing. Break down the body into shapes and don't half-ass lineart. You can't think of it as "tracing over sketch", you have to, dare I say it, FEEL the FORM and draw actual 3d shapes instead of sloppy symbols.
Also it's better to draw big and then resize the lineart. SAI's 0.1 size pen is fugly as shit, so quit using it like you are.
>>2994690
I really like it. For someone who hasn't drawn in a while, you look like you've been drawing all the time.
Do you have any specific studies/recommendations for a beginner for constructing (stylized anime) faces? I am practicing (Loomis, draw a box, gesture drawing picures I've stored up, anything I can find exercises with) but I want to sketch things to keep motivated while doing it and I don't feel like I am improving when I then try to apply it.
I'm especially having difficulty with front facing (not 3/4 view) faces looking off to one side. If I use rulers and perspective tools/guides I can correct some of my mistakes such as one eye being too big, elippses being off, jaw lines being uneven, and so forth, but then it becomes very stiff.
>>3000629
What about something like this?
>>3001076
I did draw big and didnt use Sai.
>>3000894
Common thought police, those hips dont be long to a child.
