If you are a /beg/inner in art, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the drawthread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead (I recommend ShareX)

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

There's a new (and cleaner) sticky in town! You can see it at:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1uwaXKU7ev6Tw_or__o8ARpUb6r2rCZYJGqwSFV9AD98/edit#bookmark=id.15jx3pyuimvj

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

Hey, maybe the horizon is actually lower and what we see in the background is a hill. Or we don't see the horizon due to the mist. Sure, he needs some work on his values and facial elements (oh, and the boobs aren't big enough), but overall, it's not bad for a beginner.

Because there's no background/story other than a crow it can be jarring to see such contrast. Using the whole range of black-white values is good but having something like an environment to relate it to is even better.
>>
>>2992877
You're going to look back on those drawings one day and feel very ashamed

Not because you're still a beginner, but because of the content on them.
>>
Does anyone notice certain quirks or habits they have when it comes to drawing?

For me, I tend to make the head too big and I will most often default to a 3/4th pose

How do you get better at judging proportions? Do you just grind drawing with photo references? Are there any other exercises?
I sketched myself with the help of a photo I took today. I was quite satisfied with it but there were slight proportion mistakes, so I'd like to get better.
>>
>>2992971
Draw one shape from the image you're referencing and then take measurements of that shape on your reference with a pencil to build a cubit with which to measure the proportional distamcee

Hello first time here on this board a wrote a short 72 page story a pretty good one in fact the thing is that i think it would be way better as a comic the other thing is i draw like shit.
I am still learning but here is the question is there any way i can contact myself with an artist i together make the comic?
>>
>>2993058
Almost everyone here finds digital appealing. The point is to make sure your baseline skills are to a level where you won't feel uncomfortable on a tablet since it takes harder to improve on digital as it is on traditional.
>>
>>2993073
You don't have the money for a good artist.
But don't worry. Success of One Punch Man, Kaiji, Blame, etc. proves that you can draw like shit and still make it in a comic world if your story is interesting.
>>
>>2993077
Those all have unique cohesive styles though, they're not just "drawn bad"
>>
>>2993077

>>
>>2993557
Why would you want to? You can get a year's supply of pencil and paper for the same price as an "ok" tablet

Can you elaborate? I've heard people say this but I've also heard people saying that getting used to a tablet is hard as fuck and that they wished they just started off digital, though they definitely could be in the minority.

I've been using paper for Keys to Drawing and drawabox stuff but I'm wondering if it's okay to mix in tablet practice alongside paper

>>
>>2993690
I don't know about that. Sketching fundamentals, maybe, but the convenience of having a single tool that can do anything compared to hundreds of dollars of various pencils, pens, brushes, markers, paints, papers, canvases, etc... it kind of balances out pretty quickly. I guess it depends on what you have access to, how much cash your have to spend on your hobby, and how much work space you have, though.

1.21 gigawatts! 1.21 gigawatts. Great Scott!
>>
>>2993863
Pretty shit, kouhai.
The girl's body and limbs are so unnaturally thin, she looks like a cardboard figure. Even anorexic gals don't have anything like that, and the shapes imply that she has some meat on her bones, which is outright impossible. Her proportions are mostly horrendous, and the face... yeah, cymbals. You did much better with the chef, although you probably owe this relative success to his loose clothing. The face is still far from normal, and the lengths of each part of his arms vary abnormally.

Both bodies are stiff, yes, and their positions don't look natural/3D enough, but I'll let someone else explain that. There's also moderate chicken scratching, but that's less noticeable with all the bad proportions. Now, what you need is to closely study 3D references and memorize the form, then learn how to draw faces... no, actually, looking at the skull of your chef, you need to study heads as well.

https://sketchfab.com/models/e8813c9dc7764c9fb8bc956ff7543bba — basic female.
https://sketchfab.com/models/ea4c6664cb3f45cfba8fcd961e02d1de — slender female.

For faces and heads, any guide that lies closer to your intended goal. Your current stylization does not look good, although the expression of "disgust mixed with slight fear" on the girl's face could be considered a good attempt at expression (not a face). The cake and the man's clothing are still the best parts of the picture.

>>2993891
A complete beginner. Your aim in drawing these is unclear, but these doodles are neither barely decent gestures nor barely decent attempts at copying.

I kinda suck at painting... and art.

Are there any books i can read to help improve in rendering, painting, values and etc. I'm drawing a comic and every bit of art "gainz" will help.

Also Critique I know it's a sketch and it's off a bit here and there, but i wanna see what's not obvious to me.
>>
Why does using a reference feel as dirty as plain tracing? I'm pretty decent at it by now and have actually been accused of tracing, even though I wasn't. Like I know it makes my work 100 times better, but it's like fake talent, you know.
>>
>>2994183
You use references to better understand what your drawing.

If you reference a pose, your gonna have to understand what's causing the persons body to move that way. Why the muscles contract and extend. Their center of gravity, how light effects the shadow, value and etc. How different sized people (Fat, Skinny, Lean or Muscular) look in that pose.

Hell if you feel referencing is dirty, THEN how the fuck are you gonna draw anything from real life...

you are REFERENCING real life after all...
>>
>>2994183
if you didn't use ref you'd probably draw even less and post on 4chan even more

so whats the proper way of "studying anatomy" ? is it just drawing from reference and understanding where everything goes?

also unrelated question but can you criticize something as symbol drawing if its from your imagination? it wouldn't apply there, right? or am I misunderstanding what Symbol drawing is?
>>
>>2994294
>unrelated question
It's actually very related. If you have a good understanding of form and have built an internal library of how stuff is, you'll be able to draw from imagination and make it look authentic, because you've internalized how eg an eyeball would look if it was there and won't need a reference to do it. If that makes any sense.

>>
>>2993761
Don't get memed. It's necessary to draw from reference because you don't remember what things look like. You can't rely on your shoddy memory of things just yet because you've never paid attention like you are doing now.

Just look at the face you drew. You have the picture in front of you yet it's still missing a lot. Imagine if you had to draw that without a reference.

The only problem with copying is that you may be mindlessly doing it and not thinking about how to retain what you copy. So say you're drawing an eye, and just copy it without thinking about how it works, how the eyelids, brow, eyeball form together. That's gonna keep you reliant on copying and will never teach you how to construct a drawing of an eye on your own.

So it's not references that are the problem. It's the lack of study.
>>
>>2994333
I like 2D more than 3D, I'm probably autistic but I can't really deal with the stress of having to consider how I make other people feel or worry about them not fucking me over.

>>
>>2993902
This is very helpful, Thank you!

I never grasped the whole thing about 3dimensional forms, probably my biggest issue.
>>
Are there any good small exercises you can do in 20 minutes each day to improve on basics? I need some that I can do during lunch breaks at work.
>>
>>2994351
>I'll make sure I study more instead of copying.
Do both in large quantity.
>>
>>2994356
You can do little form studies. Like drawing cubes, cylinders, spheres in space with a light source. It doubles as line work practice too.
>>
>>2994351
>>2994357
Isn't the purpose of study to understand how something works by copying its appearance as accurately as possible?
>>
>>2994066
Keep going, you're doing well. Your faces are still bordering on uncanny. I'd suggest to go find a handsome face and study it. Try to bridge the gap between your faces and a handsome face. There's a beauty standard to all faces. You can make it your default and just make adjustments from there to create any face you want.
>>
>>2993891

- ditch that book.
- get a cheap sketchbook or print paper.
- Go through keys to drawing. link in sticky
>>
>>2994361
Accurate copying may not be enough to convey to you what's happening to the structure of the object. Especially if you're only paying attention to values and not the form. So it's important to also learn how an object holds together in 3d and what's happening beneath the surface in order to understand how to draw it better or draw it from imagination.

Study also shorthands copying in that if you know the structure of the object and understand how lighting works, you can recreate your own shadows. It saves you from needing to copiously copy each inch of value from the reference.

Longman is loooooooooooong.
You have fucked up his legs greatly. Fix the connection of his legs and torso, i. e. move the pelvis upwards and the legs even more upwards (study the human skeleton to see how they should connect). His closer leg is also bent unnaturally, it's like he has just landed after jumping over an abyss instead of resting against the railing.

And I like the rendering on the upper portion of his body, it almost looks like a paintover which is both bad and good. Everything else still seems to be in early WIP stages.
>>
>>2994474
okay, will keep this in mind.

that you describe the rendering as 'almost like a paintover' is quite a positive comment imo, considering that I used no references in this particular piece.

By the way, which colors and modes did you use for skin shading? I'd like to try out your approach and see if my shading benefits from it.

RGB colors (the firealpaca default), basically everything drawn on layers with 'normal' blending mode, except a single layer with 60% oppacity 'add' mode for the highlight coming from the right.
On top of that another 'normal' layer, in which I re-paint all the highlighted areas, to make sure that the colours don't look too unnatural (I also add a fine red line between highlighted area and rest of the skin before blending, to simulate the light being scattered through the skin)

If that spot near her ear is supposed to be a blush, it's too far back. It doesn't look like a cheekbone either, it's more of a tumah. The connection of her arm to her torso is weird, the angle is too big. Or rather, too small and the connection is too far up, even more because she is lowering her shoulders, as we can see by the forms of her body.

Maybe. I mean it's probably alright for anime-styled things, but the main difference isn't the use of layer modes, but that you exclusively use "skin color".

Here's a side by side comparison of the color palettes used in the skin in our pictures. Yours has colors that you would only find in scenarios with perfectly neutral lighting conditions. My skin in comparison is heavily tinted by the lights and colors it is surrounded by - almost blue from the sky lights, almost red from the lights bouncing of the bricks.

>>2995337
i seem to have a really hard time drawing figures that are in certain positions (laying on back in this case)

What's a good drawing tablet that's at least 10''x6'' and not ridiculously expensive?
>>
>>2995410
Huion 1060, the latest one. there's at least 4 iterations and they have confusing naming conventions.

How come my drawing doesn't even have a remote likeness? i understand its a bad drawing and particularly the features and eye spacing are completely fucked. but it just doesnt look like anything in the photo. this is disheartening
>>
>>2995410
are those dimensions for the active area or entire tablet?

Make the index finger shorter.
Don't forget, it moving in perspective
>>
>>2995410
There's the medium Wacom Intuos/Intuos Pro which are a little smaller than that for $200/$350 respectively.

Other than that, maybe the Huion 1060 PLUS, WH1409, or Q11K? I've heard mixed things about Huion quality, mostly with their drivers.
>>
>>2995417
you need to fine tune measurements. loomis is just a guideline for a correct face. the reality is everyone has different shaped heads, eyes are spaced apart different, longer/short upper lips, bigger smaller chin, eyelids angle different ways, nose and lips are shaped all kinds of different ways, where the eyebrows sit on the brow ridge etc, theres and endless list of slight variations to measure

somethings about yours that stick out are
>chin too big
>jaw shape is off
>over shape of head is off
>nose to wide
>eyes way too close together
>nostils way off. his nose is level, your drawing has it diagonal
>the M of the upper lip is too tight in yours
>the C of the lower lip is also too tight
>eyebrow shapes are off
>>
>>2995418
Active area.

>>2995416
>>2995424
The Wacoms are a little out of my price range right now. I guess it's between the 1060 Plus and the Q11K. I don't really care about wireless or tablet hotkeys, is there much difference between the two besides that?

whats your time frame? i have a hard time believing you cant just hold off a couple months and still not be able to afford the medium intuos for $200. you can just keep making pencil/paper gains until then

>>
>>2995451
I mean, I could afford it if there was a good reason, but it's not like I'm making money off art so it's a little expensive. Is Wacom noticeably better than Huion?
>>
>>2995464
I never used a Wacom but I couldn't imagine it being that much noticeably better. I'm very satisfied with Huion.
>>
>>2995464
>if there was a good reason
if you intend on painting/using color. its infinitely cheaper. i dont know shit about huion. i have an intuos pen and touch small and youll outgrow it fast because the active area is like drawing on a napkin but otherwise is fine
>>
>>2995266
Is that a caricature, whys his jaw so long
does he have tiny teeth with is tiny mouth?

for the face
-mouth too low
-chin too low
-ear too high
-jaw does not go into ear
-hair line is off , looks like a wig
-eyes look like symbol drawing

for the pose at the top right
if her elbows are going to be close to her chest
her chest is going to need to pop out more or curve in
and if her elbows are going to be out
her shoulders need to tilt closer to the neck

Just started the draw a box thing and I'm in the box lesson right now, and I have a question in 1 point perspective; When I use 1 point perspective do I put 2 perpendicular lines, which one is smaller than the other? I'm confused, can anyone explain 1 point perspective?

What kind of stuff should I focus on to grind up skill?

I know I need anatomy practice and perspective practice for sure, but what are the sorts of things I should draw to get better at those (and just in general)

I thought there was a chart for it floating around but I'll take what advice I can get

So, you didn't draw for a year? That "progress" could be made in 3 days. And I'm usually the one telling people to take their time, but come on. If it isn't a bait, I bet you didn't even try to get better for real.

Yes, we can tell. You aren't measuring when you draw.

Try drawing the ribcage and pelvis as boxes turning in different directions then connecting them. Then fill in the anatomy staying inside the boxes. Try looking up Robo Bean by Proko and you'll understand what I mean.
>>
>>2995589

Why are you like this
>>
>>2995703

>proko
>>
>>2995739
Proko's tutorials are actually really good you meming autsimo. Although he can't draw a kangaroo from imagination, he sure can draw the human figure a million times better than you can. Maybe if you actually draw you'd realize that it doesn't matter where you get the information so long as you get the results.

Here are some adjustments. I made the eyes smaller and pulled down everything from below the eyes. I made the face narrower and the jaw and chin slightly wider. Lips larger. A few tweaks like that is all it needed. Plus some shadows and it will look fine.
>>
>>2995857
Yes, I worked on it sporadically. Was all the effort wasted?
>>
>>2995860
I don't know. I like it, it takes a lot of effort to animate, so I'm impressed but how well you did despite some errors here and there.
>>
>>2995859
much better
>>
>>2995851
stpo using a reference to define your character. you're learning nothing
>>
>>2995839
this is far beyond anything I could do, but it feels like you should move more parts.

its stiff because certain parts stay too perfectly still for too long. you need to move things like legs and shoulders a tiny bit from time to time even if they arent involved in the direct or main "action"

the big guys feet should shift a little when he recieves the attacks and the guys shoulders should move as his arms do, they stay right at his side when hes lifting his hands over his head, they should move up on his frame a little bit.

Im sure thats a lot more work though. and I admittedly have no idea what Im talking about
>>
>>2995876
That actually helps me a lot. Thanks for the advice.
>>
>>2995872
What do you think I should be doing to get better?
>>
Hello /beg/,

I have been trying to copy that Picasso drawing upside down for the last 2 hours now and it never seem to come half right, some part are always too big and I can't fit the rest of the drawing on my sheet, what am I doing wrong?
>>
>>2995888
the opposite. think of a pose you want and gather references (more than one if you have to) to make it work (instead of the other way around)
>>
>trying to switch from pen to digital
>circles keep coming out lopsided
>notice stability setting
>disable

Not suppose to be perfect! The more you draw the better you get. That exercise is for you to get your ass drawing. If it somewhat look the same then move on to other exercise.
