If you are a /beg/inner in art, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the drawthread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead (I recommend ShareX)

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

I like the fluffy look in the thumbnail. You could make your doggo more fluffy by using the smudge tool set to about 3 px and vigorously "brushing" all the outlines with it. Which program do you use, by the way? Figuring out which brushes to use is pretty straightforward in CSP.
>>
>>2989351
don't worry about it. you're always guessing the perspective anyway, it's never an exact thing. it's more important to just keep drawing. the more you draw, the better you get at this shit. don't worry about it on a single drawing too much and get stuck there.

>>
>>2989657
I think you could post this in the regular draw thread... it looks like you're making the transition from beginner. How long have you been drawing m8?

Also have any of you guys thought about writing a novel and illustrating it? I've seen some illustrations in books that were mediocre at best ad writing isn't that hard if you think about all the time we spend shitposting.
>>
>>2989660
>writing isn't that hard
Maybe, but there's a lot more to writing a novel. You have to have a compelling story, good pacing, good prose, etc. People who think this way are the reason there are so many shitty novels out there. Anyway, if you want to talk about writing, go to /lit/. It's just as much a skill as drawing.
>>
>draw on paper for a while
>try to go back to tablet
>0 pen control
>>
>>2989667
Yeah I can pick up what you're putting down. I would assume if you just start typing novels like El Ron Hubbard or Steven king that eventually your writing might become acceptable like after 10-20 novels or novellas. A typical novella is 15-30k words and I added up all my shit posts from a particularly active night and I had type over 3k words so I think writing would come naturally to 4chan autists. The reason I mentioned it here is because I think that would be a cool way to apply your artwork even if it is very mediocre. Children's books is another idea but that requires more drawing. I think, for me at least, 30 drawings for a light novel sounds about right because it would be an illustration every few pages and it would take me about the same time to draw all the pictures as write the book and if I wrote 3k words and draw a picture everyday then I would be done in a month, including editing and being a lazy shithead.

And you don't have to only illustrate fiction.. a political dissertation could benefit from illustration equally. The thing is that my lack of motivation and insecurity is what is killing me the most and they say that people who set small goals and achieve them are the most successful so writing and illustrating shitty light novels sounds like the perfect idea to me. Even if they suck at first then the next one might be better.

I'm guessing there are tumblr authors and deviantarttards so that is kind of depressing though.

Draw more faces using whatever construction method you're using (loomis, bridgman, etc) and see what differences you see in different faces. Try memorizing as many different types of noses eyes and lips you can and you will learn how to mix and match them to get different faces. Once you're comfortable with that, start messing with different face structures

Yeah. And this is the main reason, although you also need to shape your arms better.
Check the shape and keep it in mind for your next drawings.

>>2990185
3/4. Literally.
Like, if your head is 320 px tall, then it's about 240 px wide. If the closer eyes is 20 px wide, the other one is about 15 px. If the angle is less than 30—40 degrees, the difference in proportions is less, and it is bigger in case of the opposite. The vertical positions are no different from the frontal view, and you have sketchfab for studying horizontal positions.

Loomis work IS a stylization, even if it's almost "photo realistic"

But I don't say that just to deny, like we do on the internet, but just to say, you can have a different goal than drawing like Loomis, Loomis taught a way to draw, we are here to discuss about drawing, not especially about Loomis
that's why I personally like people not answering question of /beg/ with "Loomis"
But that's a good and interesting answer you got there

There's nothing wrong with classes, especially for painting - there's a lot of beginner info, like what brushes, paint, how to mix glazes, stuff like that, that's easier to learn in person.
>>
>>2989585
Ask around about the teacher. Teacher skills and personality is important. Paying money just to get a lazy asshole of a teacher is just infuriating.

Check current and past students work if you can. Usually they have it on a website or the put it on display in the class.

Once you're satisfied with everything then spend your money.

I have a question that's been bothering me for a while. How important is it that I be able to draw and create something entirely from my mind?

I find that if I draw from imagination I can create something pretty okay looking but it will take me forever. However when I use reference the time difference is huge, I can immediately spot any mistakes in my sketches and quickly correct them. Sometimes I use 3D models to figure out my lighting and i feel like i'm cheating because I know that i'd never be able to figure out some things on my own but I feel like I am supposed to... am I?

The reason i do this is because i have a learning problem. I'll study something for several days and then forget it the following week. this causes a lot of anxiety for me and using these references are a remedy for that. I grew tired of having to relearn how to draw certain body parts over and over again but at the same time i feel guilty because it feels like i'm cheating.
>>
>>2990435

>>
>>2990469

When is the last time you take a break? Usually when anxiety hits me I take a break a day or two. And when I come back it just seems silly that I had anxiety in the first place and my confidence just get a boost and I learn so much faster.

Maybe it's just me. But try it how knows it might work better for you.

You're bad at proportions and also don't really know what's the underlying anatomy so it's not presented all that correctly. Also because she has no clothes, makes her look like way more unattractive.
>>

>>
>>2990536

>>
>>2990510
You might be. Even though your picture has a fuckton of issues, it has some appeal, not related only to sex.

To fix your fuckton of issues, you need to know anatomy/proportions and think in 3D. First off, her far thigh can't be smaller than the one facing the viewer. Second, her hands have too different sizes and shapes, not to mention that the length of fingers can't exceed the length of the palm so much. Third, you put her hips too high. Four, you need to fix your chicken scratching habit. Draw clean and confident lines. Five, learn about values and line weight.

That would be enough for now. Now here's a model that can help you fixing some of these issues and the ones I didn't mention.
https://sketchfab.com/models/e07356fe016e4d6d93653145059fd6ec
>>
>>2989635
Good start. Remember not to get caught up with lines and forget the form. This Loomis technique emphasizes on adding shapes to a sphere, so for instance, the nose is a cone shape, the cheeks are small cubes or puffy spheres, etc. Your lines aren't really showing any shape to the head.

Woo, it looks like you're studying construction! Good for you. Your faces are already having more symmetry and alignment to them than before. You're showing the planes of the head now which is good.

One thing I'd like to point out is that your noses look a bit long. A good rule of thumb is to keep the base of the nose halfway between browline and chin. Learn the basic division of proportions. You can just learn the front view and it will translate directly to all other views. Loomis or Hampton, either one. In terms of foreshortening, the gaps between features shrinks as they move further from view.

Next is that you're face is slanted, the chin is far in front of the forehead on most. Compare it to the bald head which has a better angle. Study the head in profile to see just how the plane of the face curves. I think the main problem though is that you're forgetting to move the jaw/earline along with the head. So when your face tilts up, the jaw stretches out rather than also tilting.
>>
>>2990510
I like it but am personally not a fan of the anime eyes. Just takes away from the nice line drawing you did. You can still have stylized eyes that are more realistic. It would probably look much better.
>>
>>2990568
binge sycra and draw boxes.
>>
>>2990401
At this point, it just looks like you need to spend more time rendering what is there. For instance, the eyes and nose are unfinished. They still have lines and it's not well defined what's going on there.

Good job painting that for the first time though! Your values seem okay to me and you're blending isn't bad. It's not really as muddy as you say. You're just lacking knowledge about what's going on with the features so you don't know how to render it. From here on out, it's just a matter of you learning more about the head. The form, construction, anatomy, and so on to help you better paint what's there.

You know, if it's creatures you want to draw, you could always just use reference from other creatures (be it real or created by other artists) and just pick the elements you like. Also in general, just draw more. every time you use reference you'll remember some elements for later and build up your mental library, assuming you don't just mindlessly copy and actually think about why it has certain proportions, details, etc..

The middle portrait's face looks too wide and the ears are too short (i. e. their upper borders are not high enough). The left one has bad head, but the face is passable. The jaws should be rounder and the eye sockets should be bigger. The right portrait looks pretty good, but: the chin is misaligned, the far eye's lower eyelid droops too much, and you put his far ear lower than the other, which is strange, considering the facial elements that suggest a lack of sideways tilt.

Yeah, a book proved to be a much better teacher. You're improving relatively fast. I wonder if you really needed those several months of drawing heads without it.
>>
>>2991301
On tilting the facial elements I always find that the eyes and mouth especially just seem to float above the face and obstruct the place that they were meant to be placed at, not seeming to move at all.

Don't beat yourself up about that; Loomis had his whole life to write some book about a topic he was interested in, you only have 12 hours to summate why some random stranger over the internet fails to draw faces correctly before the thread dies.

I wish I'd picked up Bridgman and Loomis sooner, though. Anyways: time to advance in the direction of the rightmost head

Drawing from observation doesn't need construction. It trains the ability to observe, analyze and reproduce that image in your brain into the canvas.

Did you even do that upside down picasso shit? how did you draw that? By observing. Seeing the relation between the angles. That is the beginning of drawing and that's what the books teaches you.

The book pretty much hold your hand along the way. Now what you need to do is to train your eye, brain and hand coordination. Take simple objects around the house put it on a table and start drawing by OBSERVING. Line by line, angle by angle. Then start breaking it down into simple shapes. The light area, the shadow area are their own shapes. The objects are made of shapes. The trick is to look at it from far and not close in on the details.

Once you can copy what you SEE even if it's not perfect. You can now move on to studying the construction. Loomis etc...

Now if you're confuse instead of being frustrated JUST START DOING IT. Take out your pencil and paper and start drawing stuff in your room. Draw everything then take a break and let the knowledge seep in.

Just recently I got my hands on some Dr Martin's Bleedproof White for correcting my ink lines and adding highlights. Thing is though, while it covers the lines well and it dries opaque and smooth, I can't go back over it with ink or anything, it just breaks it up or reacts to it in some manner. I tried it with dip pens but that doesn't work.
The brush worked alright, as you can see on the right, but that's on a thin application of the White, and I don't think that would be enough to properly cover any mistakes or linework. On a medium appliaction, like on the left, it just mixes into the stuff and the lines aren't very smooth and lovely.
Not sure what I'm doing really.

Damn. Yeah, it's really apparent on the squirtle. It's annoying because I always notice it immediately after the drawings done.

I don't know if this is the right thread/board for this I don't really "do" art I just kinda doodle in my lecture notes from time to time

I was feeling brave and decided to doodle something a little more complicated than a stickman and I thought it was going okay up till a certain point and I realised something

Where the fuck does the head go

Like how do I get a neck and head out of this

I know in terms of perspective and proportions and all that it's a total mess but I'm just doodling so I figure it doesn't really matter

I just kinda want to finish it now. Where does the head go

Those points are too far away to bother, and there is not enough parallel lines to build the complete grid.

When I erase my pencil backing after inking in the lines in my drawings usually look off slightly, and fail to keep the original thickness/structure they have in the sketch.

What do you think is better for learning? To finish a shit painting you've already invested quite some time in or moving on and drawing something else?
>>
>>2992454
Having been in this situation numerous times, I recommend the latter option. Looking at something too much gets your eyes used to it, and you start to perceive it as normal, which is a bad idea when you drew something poorly.

What do you do to get perfectly clean lines in digital art? Rough it out, create a new layer, then pen tool over it?
>>
>>2992489
use your tablet to play FPS games until you get pixel perfect accuracy
>>
>>2992490
lol is that seriously possible?
>>
>>2992489

Yes, but clean up your rough scratch, and zoom in to create the pen line. Use long, sweeping atrokes for good line weight and flow control, then zoom out and inspect your work.
>>
When using the Loomis method of constructing a head, how do you cater for head shapes? I'm trying to copy reference photos with the Loomis method with some success but if it's a woman typically their head is not as wide as men so I have to "cut off" some of the side
>>
>>2992463
this looks insanely retarded because you're ignoring the head proportions. I'm not memeing when I say please go read Loomis because his book explains the proportions of the head

>>2992489
Create a new layer and trace over your drawing, you need to make broad long and confident strokes to get it really clean. It takes a lot of retries and a steady hand

Well I tried to apply the Bleedproof White thinly on some test splotches of ink. I mixed in some water and then for good measure, dropped some water on top, closed the lid, and let it sit overnight. However I think it thinned too much because it didn't cover well and just kinda blotched over the ink. I was able draw over it with a ballpoint pen and felt tip brushes though.
I dunno, might have to keep at this stuff or try another brand.

can anyone help me with this anatomy and boobs position?
>>
>>2991756
You're expecting too much from it. It's not meant to be worked over - it's artist's white out - it was originally used to fix mistakes in art that was going to be photographed - non-opaque white's become transparent when photographed, which is why people used paints like this to cover up mistakes.

This is the hard part with ink drawing - mistakes can be deadly. On thicker papers, you can scratch or sand the mistakes off, but too big a mistake means starting over.

Ink drawing is all planning ahead, and not getting ink into areas you want highlights in, and not making mistakes.
>>
>>2991768
You are lacking good drawing skills, and haven't captured the face accurately.

You're using black to shade. Just stop.

Your lighting is completely wrong.

You're attempting work that's above your skill level. You need more work on the building blocks - lighting, shading, color, and anatomy.

You'll need all of that for stylized work, like this, even though it's not realistic.
>>
>>2992406
Trade secrets?

LOL.

Yeah, no. That's not a thing.

>>
>>2992814
I see. As I said, it's pretty good at covering up mistakes or smears on the board, but if it isn't to be worked over I'll just have to further train and discipline myself.

Thanks man. Gonna make note of this.
>>
>>2992862
Exactly, it's not meant as a layering paint to work on top of, it's for touching up.

I know what you're going through, I've been doing ink work and calligraphy for years. You have to plan everything out before you start inking.
