It is easier to work with only variable brush size, or variable density. Variable size emulates pen/brush (manga), while variable density feels like mechanical pencil (anime cel). Decide what look you want.

That's not what construction is.
What's surprising is you somehow managed to put in rhythm and flow into your drawing just in the outline phase and the proportions still look relatively fine. How long have you been drawing anon? You should try learning about light and color basics if you can draw sketches like this consistently. You still have a few areas that could be pushed more, like giving the knees jut out just a little more to give them volume but you're on the right track.

First off. I'd recommend Bridgman's Constructive anatomy and Bridgman's Complete Guide to Drawing from life. His drawings are very planar and structural which will help you immensely with shading because if you know where the planes are, you know where the values of shadows go. After that I'd also reccommend Scott Robertson's How To Render book, as well as maybe Color and Light by James Gurney. That should teach you everything you need to know. I'd reccommend also Kienan Lafferty's series on coloring on Youtube. You'll learn shit like:

>every change in plane is a change in value and every change in value means that there's a change in plane as well
>desaturate shadows and lights, saturate midtones, hue shift colors when they get lighter or darker

As long as you copy the planes of the drawings and read the text you should be fine. His drawings are really well drawn, but they are very rough. Really the important things it will teach you is how the muscles wedge into each other and how to simplify the masses of muscles into blocky forms. If you don't already have a decent idea of where muscles are supposed to like or go, look at Hampton to see what the shapes and names of the muscles are first and then try Bridgman if it's too difficult to understand. I already knew the basic shapes of the muscles and vaguely knew where they went but I had trouble drawing them in different angles and making them not flat, so copying all of Bridgman's drawings did wonders for me.

I'm no master, but I'd start with simple forms that are easier to manipulate with, so I use them for figuring out the composition.
Fleshing it out with muscle can be difficult, but as you practice form and perspective, your canvas will turn into 3D space you can reach into and pull your forms out of.

Good resources are Drawabox/Dynamic sketching, Vandruff's perspective (there's a thread about it right now, don't miss it) and exercises from Scott Robertson's How to draw.

So tell me. Why do people insist on using realistic rendering techniques on anime. Is this on purpose? Do they not understand where the line between appealing and uncanny valley is? Do they just have a shitty sense of design? Like does anyone think this is acceptable?

well it's pretty obvious why someone would attempt things like that: they want to draw anime, but they also want to render (i.e. take their drawing further/apply knowledge of form)
artists that developed their skills attempting to represent reality but also have an interest in anime will usually attempt to fuse the appealing anime style with a higher sense of realism: of course it's a desirable idea, cute waifus but MORE real!
but, of course, you can't create true 'anime girls' without a very strong abstraction from reality. and like you said, the uncanny valley is difficult to avoid while rendering such highly stylized forms.

i think any artist that is raised on the '/ic/ mindset' (large focus on fundamentals, less of a focus on appeal/stylization) has to kind of re-learn how to draw things purely based on appeal, and that includes going through a phase where they're attempting to use their 'skills' on stylized things, resulting in spooky uncanny valley and largely unappealing drawings. creating and understanding appealing stylization is of course a whole separate skill that has to be trained and developed, and it's usually underestimated by /ic/.

So many people on /ic/ have trouble rendering that it's almost strange. You go anywhere else, and you'll see beginners/intermediate artists that are able to render a nice looking piece, but they need to work on fundamentals. Here it's the opposite, and its a big reason why a lot of people here aren't able to truly see how they're improving. I wouldn't call the rendering on this "realistic." Realistic rendering should respect the actual form. What people like >>2992411 do is apply a rote memorization of some face rendering that doesn't fit the form. They end up with something that has the geometry of a bisque doll, and just as creepy.

Anime figures are as real as you can get, and they "render" just fine.

I guess the biggest thing to realise about animu faces is that they don't really even *have* any features that you would need to shade. Just look at that pic you posted, it's just a flat wall with eyes and a mouth painted on.

So if you leave the face almost featureless and render everything like you would normally and you'll probably get something that looks ok

Yeah rendering cartoons should look like toys and figurines. 3D molders also have the problem of shoehorning in random "realistic" details that aren't in the original 2d designs, it baffles me that some people want things to look ugly.

i have a funny sort of tip about poses, i think some people when they draw they primarily imbue their figure with um life i guess, like try make it look like there's a person in there. and if you're that kind of artist and you want to do dynamic poses you can try thinking of a dynamic personality for your figure and it can make it a lot easier to think of those kinds of poses.
