Cell-shading in anime how the fug it works ?!

Is not only the wrinkles and values the shading in anime is simplified, a few wrinkles and then a big block or shadows and few shadow details. What I can study and practice to get better at shading like that ?

I copied the character in black from anime screenshots, the other characters I took screenshots and I draw them in a different but similar pose

How can I learn what wrinkles and what forms to use ?
>>
>>2982105
When you do these do they also have the values mapped out for coloring? Or are you eye balling them for form?

Do you have any cell sketches? Or some of the space crafts? I'm down to print one and ink/color it. A better question might be - where are you getting the sketches from?

My eyes, hair, and cloth are way behind my perspective and anatomy, which isn't great yet either...

I'm sorry you feel that way, but the only response on my first post was
>Not sure but her right breast looks smaller than her left.

If you look between the first time I posted and the ones after, I did enlarge that breast a decent amount, and didn't get any critique then to say that I didn't do it enough or correctly. I apologize that they're wonky, and that's clear that I need to spend more time studying them, but I've taken into account all feedback that I recieved so I don't know what else to say to that.

Use the layers and select tool. They are your friends. What I like to do is duplicate the layer with my final outline and use the select tool to select the space or spaces I want to color. That way, if I mess up, I could do it over again. Did that help?

I don't see a gag. Anyway, yes, you must scale down the head, around to this level. I really like the shading and form, but the neck area seems too long, as if something is pulling on her head. And, the arm looks pointlessly bent. I get that you did it to avoid one of those fade outs, but it takes away from the charm.

Ah, gotcha. I'd say you need to try copying some animu style until you can reproduce it well enough. That'll mean you grasp the size of the features, eyes, mouth, that kind of crap. Once you can copy those things, you'll be more aware of those details in your own work because you'll be looking for them, and fix the inconsistencies.

Ok, I got a problem. I was going to start to color this, but then I thought maybe I should re-do the lines. As I was doing so, I couldn't replicate the face shape how I wanted. I think the line thickness is throwing me off, or that I'm tracing something without clearly identifying the structure.

Should I just go ahead with the sketch?

Left (far) eye is too low and angled too far inward, also it is rotated counterclockwise relative to the right eye. That's why it looks that way.

Concept is good.

The cloth concept for second mask is better, I think.

Liked the scarf, sad to see it go in the second version.

Its a few things, japanese likes to use a lot more rounder and angular shape language while americans tend to move toward blockier shape languages.

plus you have inking and coloring difference, for example keyman has very american styled characters, but still follows japanese inking trends which makes it look more manga esque, but if you changed their rendering technique it wouldn't look out of place in an american comic.

Kudos to you for finishing something, although you never seemed to have a problem with that in the past. I think the illustration is fine, but I feel like the level of detail is too consistent throughout the piece. The characters in the balconies look like they were drawn at the same scale as the ones in the foreground and just scaled down afterward, which creates a weird effect where the things far away seem clearer than things up close. Your rendering ability is good, but you gotta figure out when to go all out and when to step back and let the eye fill in the details.

Zoom out there Teddy Broosevelt. The reason the eye won't settle is it's trying to nest between a few small perspective errors.

Follow the centerline of the helmet through the chin.

The visor center needs to move left, the nose right, and then the eye will fall into place a little higher.

With the space blank, the errors aren't visible, but trying to settle an eye in the middle draws them out.

This is a super early WIP to illustrate what I mean. I'll finish it, but I have to go to work.

>>
>>2985921
Unironically?

You find things that are appealing. Even though "taste" is subjective, there is a weird hidden thread somewhere that makes things aesthetically pleasing. That's the reason why two vastly different styles may appeal to the same person.

The way you make an appealing style is to be at the ready whenever some element jumps out at you. Copy shit and analyze why you like it and sure enough you'll find that certain thing you.

IT'S FUCKIN MAGIC, but in all honesty it hits you in a very subtle way that makes you say "oh fuck what?" when you think about it more deeply. Just keep at it mang

The problem for me with the eyes is that I can't seem to get a proper handle on the perspective, at least with the face facing to the right.

Flipping it and doing a crude trackpad sketch over it (since I am having supper right now and the tablet's off the table), I guess dropping the innermost lower corner and the point where the lashes stop could help?

you have perspective issues with the arm ie your arm is perpendicular to line of sight but the glove is ( left arm), also theres no reason why the two arms would be perpendicular like that, theres just no excuse for it expect it being a simpler form of the one foot in one foot out cop out.

Talking about feet, those are some long ass feet, and her tits are a bit low.

Theres other stuff but i wont overcrowd.

>>
>>2985882
All that's left to make her perfectly feminine is:
1) To fix the upper lip, because a pronounced upper lip is a distinct feature of feminine characters. (A blush and puffy cheek would be good too.) Have this: https://design.tutsplus.com/articles/the-differences-between-male-and-female-portraits--vector-14954 Most well-defined anime styles take it into account at least when drawing profile views, pic related.
2) Make the neck rounder. Some article said that concave necks add to feminine looks while bulging necks add to masculinity. Contrary to the upper lip, this is often ignored in anime.
3) Maybe make the top of the hair rounder, but that depends on what you'd like to call lamia anatomy.

You can probably do without it though, she already doesn't look like a male anymore.

the perspective is off. There is no way the left character (behind the car) and the other guys are on the same plane. The guy talking to the girl is really small comparated to her. Also the proportions of the carr are off because one of the vanishing points (left or right) of the car is wrong placed. Yo should see the krenz tutorial "angle control" to fix your problems dude.
>>

because hes been spamming drawings in this exact same style for months in different threads, always saying "its a new one" hoping people wouldnt recognize it or something. also the name is always "image" which is a good indicator he grabbed it from somewhere. he never reacts to any sort of critical feedback and just posts the same dangan ronpa/mogeko fanart over and over again. its a pretty obvious troll. people do this all the time here with some dumb tumblr artists they dont like.

Don't get disheartened.

Don't be afraid to ruin a piece of work.

Experiment, dig through tutorials, keep everything.

You will start to spot where you make errors.

This isn't a correction... Just ran with your concept a bit. Maybe looking at somebody else's take on it will be helpful. It certainly is for me.

I look back through shit I scribbled out days or weeks ago, and immediately cringe at the obvious errors, but at the time I couldn't tell... They just looked "off" somehow... Weeks later, the errors practically leap off the page. The same thing will happen to this one.

Not feeling like doing boots and gloves right now...

Uhhh, sure. It's important to have a directed goal for everything you do. To be sure, there is a grind aspect of art which can only improve through repetition but if you want to make greater gains outside of technical skill, you'll want to develop an eye for the analytical. Look at stuff you like, figure out how you would replicate it. Figure out why the composition is a certain way. Figure out why they chose the colors they did. Basically, practice without direction is like shooting blindfolded-- maybe you'll hit your mark, maybe not but it's much easier hit the target if you take off the blindfold and look in the direction of it.

So yeah, just watch people make stuff and try to figure out/emulate their decision making.

I think people here tend to get caught up with trying to fit the /ic/ mold and end up burning out from neverending fundies grind. They lose sight of what they wanted to make in the first place. It's easy advice to give someone to say "Needs more loomis" because in the vast majority of cases this is true and it will work at getting them to improve. But the truth is that it's a cop out answer. To really improve quickly, you'll want to figure out the quirks about your own learning style and to consider what's the best way approach your problems.

Basically, be malleable in your approach. Don't get overly attached to anything (your art, your methods)-- the color palette for that baiken completely changed midway through the painting lmao. I dunno, that's just how I feel though-- do whatever works.

Thank you for taking time to offer advice, it's much appreciated.

Aight, senpai.
Your new girls look cute and girly as they should, but they all seem to have short arms, Satori style.

making a comic like everyone else. tryna find a style that fits the atmosphere of what i have in mind; dire but colorful.

Seriously though, getting the subtle angles looking correct is difficult.

Move the (inner) corner of the far eye up a tiniest bit, and, I think, you can call it done.

Yeah, but don't forget the shadow.

What? pic related...

The rules of perspective that I learned contradict this...

I'm not automatically declaring you're wrong, but I'm hoping for an enlightening explanation.

Also I fixed the fucked up shoulders, but that's an unrelated oversight.

you need to know the eye sockets and nose anatomy to make good angles even for anime

Yep, it was, and I did want to reference sadpanda on a whim while sketching it out. Maybe I'd benefit from gesture drawings, though they always seemed like a scam.

Yes, I'm fine, not as busy with university as before. It was all I could do to lurk, maybe critique a bit verbally.

Hi /ic/, first time here. I'm an anon that use to draw on high school but i stopped because studies and gf and stuff. Now after years i fell in anime shit, and now i'm loving some like Boku no Hero and i usually post on /a/ threads, so because of this i decided to draw some stuff again after all this time (i still feel kind of stiff but i want to keep practicing) and it happens that a friend lend me a graphic tablet, well I have never used one before but i decided to do something that an anon on those /a/ threads requested (Itsuka Kendou ond a sundress). So this is it, my first attempt at drawing and painting. Happy to hear tips for digital drawing/painting and obviously your roast&rate.
Btw, i used Manga Studio.

And i also drew this, but still don't choose the outfit. And the eye size will be fixed, don't worry. You suggest me to try finishing it like that on pencil and paper or make use of the graphic tablet?
>>
>>2987876
most stuff like this is done on paper so just learn on paper first. then if you want use digital for fixing and color. also study more anatomy and copy more anime you like .and i may also suggest the /beg/section and the sticky for advancing your skills work on line economy as well, try to chicken scratch less.. line art is very important to anime styles. try to learn how and where to do thick and thin lines , analyze your favorite stuff to see what they do and apply what you learned. also study about how gesture and stuff is done. and try to learn some realistic stuff and basic forms (fundimentals) check out loomis and vilppu and many others recommended here.

another thing most people on here will not be as polite as i am, so dont take what they say too hard . just listen to what they are saying is wrong and ignore the shit post parts of it.z
manga studio is a good software to use .
good luck to you
>>
>>2987865
one more thing, you will only lmprove as much as you practice. practice smart .practice for a long time.and do it the right way. fundies, gesture , anatomy, back grounds and so on.

but really learn those fundies ...they really make things easier when you can apply them.

I like that you gave extra time to drawing the hand, unfortunately the posing of it is unnatural and the placement of the ring finger and pinky give the impression those fingers have an extra bone/joint.

Make this pose with your own hand and see how stressful it is.

Stop. Copying. Asura Wrath.

Make a burly and fluffy mothman, ifs its asain or eastern theme please for the love of god research eastern guardsman or warriors. Find one that suits your interest create a simple design off thethe concepts then add on to that.
>>
>>2989343
wasn't copying asura's wrath but thanks for the heads up. theres too many similarities. I literally just looked up "guardian" and drew a design on a bug like thing.

I like the fluffy and swol concept a lot. He looks way to scrawny, even for a bug.
