Staedtler makes a pretty good mechanical pencil.
Pentel is also pretty good imho.

207 is too fat, imo.
I have a 0.3mm pencil that is a pain to use without constantly breaking the graphite

I'm considering buying a rotring 800, how are they as far as pencils go?
>>
>>2981707
Too expensive and worse than the 600 and Rapid Pro in every way. The only reason to buy one is if you really need a retractable sleeve and can't stand not having a red ring in your pencils.

>>2980971
You should be using one of these, anyway.
>>
>>2981552
F or HB are the best for general purpose sketching, you should have the entire range of leads, and learn to use them. It's like limiting yourself to one color of paint and one brush, for oil painting.
>>
>>2981942
The Rapid Pro has a sliding sleeve mechanism that would help with that. It doesn't retract the entire tip like the 800, but I doubt it'll break from a normal fall if the sleeve is retracted. The internals are still plastic but it seems more solidly built than the 800. If the cushioning mechanism doesn't interest you the Graphgear 1000 is probably a better bet, at about half the price.
>>
>>2981736
No need for a sharpener, really that's the only reason. Graphite is graphite, there are multiple ways to get it onto the page. I use a clutch pencil, because I can get a broad tip for shading, and woodless pencils. What you use is up to you - find what you like, what lets you draw comfortably for hours, and doesn't fight you. I have at least one of everything, there's nothing right or wrong with mechanical pencils, they're just one of many choices we have.
>>
>>2981980
Nah. I've got enough control over the pencil to be able to do any shade of gray that I need. I've done fully shaded portraits with nothing but a mechanical pencil.

Hey, what do you anons think about coloured leads? I've been looking more and more into making the full switch over to mechanical, but this has been a trouble spot for me. For the time being, I picked up some Mitsubishi Uni 2mm red lead and a 0.7mm soft blue Pilot Color Eno to sketch with. Getting both ended up being cheaper than the last time I had to buy a pack of 2mm prisma NPB leads.
As far as other options off the top of my head, there's also the 0.5mm nano dia leads, but finding those outside of JetPens is annoying as fuck. The price for what you get from a Pentel 8 2mm multi-lead holder & refills isn't so great when compared with other artist brands. Most other 2mm+ coloured lead I've found are basically a bunch of shitty cheap bundles aimed at crafters who don't know any better.
>>
None, I hate mechanical pencils. The lead always snaps.
>>
>>2982747
how? I've been working with mechanical pencils for years and unless you use them like a barbarian, it shouldn't snap.
>>
>>2982767

I guess I'm heavy handed. I can go maybe 30 seconds without the lead breaking.
>>
>>2982769
What was the diameter of lead you've used?
>>
>>2982770

.5 and .7
>>
>>2982771
Perhaps you need to go thicker, my dude. I've seen graphite lead go up to 5.6mm, and there's always woodless/lacquered pencils too.
That being said, you could get breakage happening still if you bought some shitty cheap garbage from some no-name brand that aims for quantity over quality. Not like actual artist brands aren't guilty of poor quality control at times, but the past few years have been especially more competitive with art supplies. The adult colouring book fad is to thank for that, most likely.
>>
>>2982780

I'm fine with 2mm lead, I just can't do the thinner stuff.
>>
>>2982747
Stop pressing down too hard and stop buying cheap shit. I'm fairly heavy-handed and still manage to use 0.5mm 4B just fine.
>>
>>2982785

Or I'll just not use mechanical pencils and just stick to sketching with regular pencils, ballpoint pens and light marker.
>>
>>2982781
desu I kind of want to try out 0.3mm lead sometime just to get a feel of it.
>>
>>2982789
I find that it's not worth it unless you need to do fine details with pencil. It's too delicate. What do you think would you need it for?
>>
>>2982848
I've always leaned more towards supplies that can deliver broader strokes. It'd be more for exercise purposes, and to try to feel out any minute differences between that and even 0.5mm
>>
>>2982789
>>2982883
Not a lot of practical use for sizes below 0.5 since you can't get the full range of grades. If you just want to go as thin as possible you might as well get a 0.2mm Orenz.
>>
>>2982889
I'm looking into that right now, thank you anon. It looks like an interesting little detailer pencil to have fun with. Reading about the potential issue with lead getting stuck is far from enjoyable, though.
>>
>>2982910
maybe try a silverpoint? not the same thing but you can achieve a fine stroke with it and some really nice gradations
>>
>>2982220
Speaking of lead, is there a certain brand of lead that anyone has used that is so amazing and makes that pentel high-polymer Super seem like cheap shit? I've never seen or used any other brand now that I think about it
>>
>>2982789
you can sharpen a 0.5 by gently rubbing it sideways on a strip of paper while turning the body between your fingers. I've seen some comics guy does it for detail and I've been doing it since
>>
>>2980971
You never use the eraser on a pencil. Use a proper plastic eraser or a gum eraser
>>
>>2984544
I order Pentel Ain-Stein in bulk, it's nice and smooth and it's really as tough as advertised.
>>
>>2980252
They're shit for drawing, you need way too much pressure to trigger the mechanism and the cushion effect is unbearable. I gave mine away because I hated it so much.
>>
>>2981736
You mean mechanical pencils in general or that brand/model.

If you're asking the latter it's because it has a proper cap that keeps the lead from falling out unlike the shitty Bic ones where the erasers have a high chance of falling out and making a fucking mess in your pencil box/bag
>>
>>2984562
It just feels right, too. Slender, not too thick or thin. Good weight and balance. The tip is fine so you can clearly see where you're drawing. And each click brings out the right amount of lead.
I always do 3 clicks, and I'm set

If teh graphite is coming off on your hand, you're drawing on too slick of a paper, or you need to use something to rest your hand on, like a plastic triangle or ruler or something, so you don't disturb the drawing. You can also spray a VERY light coating of fixative or hairspray over finished parts of the drawing - if it's light enough, you can draw over it, or erase it off.

2. There's no lineweight
3. It doesn't draw like a pencil
>>
>>2993930

>>
anyone /0.3mm/ here?

as for brand, love pic related. the metal grip feels good and I don't lose pencils anymore so I don't mind paying $9. only complaint is the tip can get bent if you drop it weird
>>
>>2994416
I kinda wanted to switch to 0.3 but I already have three 0.5s I'm happy with and 0.3 leads cost three times as much when you buy them in bulk.
>>
>>2980197
These bad boys
>>
>>2994416
I use 0.3mm pencils a lot because they makes lines close to a 0.7mm ballpoint pen and give a similar feeling of carving into the page like a pen does. I usually use a Graphgear 1000 because of the retractable tip. I prefer Rotring 600s but I leave them on my drawing desk. I've thought about getting a Draftmatic, but the tip is on a spring and compresses when you press down on it, right? I don't think I could stand that.

>>2994390
Plenty of drafting pencils come in 0.3, 0.5, 0.7, and 0.9mm lead thicknesses and have a lead grade indicator. Even just a 0.3mm HB and 0.9mm 2B mechanical pencil can make just about any type of marks you'd want to make.

I wonder if I should spend the money for a good pencil and give it another try? Maybe even go for something like 0.9 for rough sketching?
>>
>>2994438
Unironically kill yourself.
Pentel Side Fx or Twist Erase are at least not shit.
>>
>Mechanical pencil
Is it worth it?
be honest
>>
>>2995225
Grab the Pentel P205 or a Graphgear (500 is lighter and better feeling but the 1000 has a retractable play). If you want to try a better mechanical pencil.
If your looking for shading instead of purely using these for sketchy line work maybe grab a lead holder. Steadtler Mars Technica is bretty good.

Personally I'm grabbing a Steadtler 925 25 05 because of its good build quality and that I don't need a retractable tip play.
>>
>>2995553
I absolutely abhor sharpening pencils. I feel like I go through a pencil a day when I do that.

A mechanical pencil is pretty much just click and go. Don't need to find a hand sharpener or get out of my seat when sketching outside or doing notes in class.

Plus I do almost all of my sketching and studies with a Steadtler or Micron anyway. So a mechanical pencil is a good translation anyway.
>>
>>2995553
If you do line drawing there's literally no reason to go with anything else.

0.5 leads are cheaper than cheap pencils in terms of the length you get
no sharpening

>>2995566

>blue leads + mech pencil
Golden for any kind of comic drawing since it won't show up in a scan. It's also good to have a weight bearing down on the page sometimes, it can give you the sense that you're lifting objects instead of just drawing them.
>>

>>
>>2995553

>>
>>2996333

>>
>>2996363

Because they can only give you a dead line. A leadholder is so much more useful.
>>
>>2996366
Depends. A regular pencil is best for drawing but a .7mm is still useful for transferring it to bristol.
>>
>>2996414

They're heavy. I only use these when I want to draw in some dark lines with a bit more control than my lighter mechanical pencils. Don't expect a lot of fast sketch lines, though, but you might develop a good hand for it soon enough, I suppose. Have fun with them.

just to have a feeling of value towards what you're doing for whatever lifestyle reasons.

Got one of these. I like it well enough. I like it much better than my twist erase if that means anything.

I have this too. Pencils with a triangle barrel are really comfortable to use.
