I decided to experiment with colored pencils. The pack I used required a lot of force to get the color out. Does anyone have any recommendations?

Use alcohol for blending and layering the pigment.
Git gud at drawing.

Using alcohol. Interesting.
yeah, i've had the same experience with those colored pencils - there's barely any pigment, definitely a flaw in those.
For a different set in the same price range, I was also pleasantly surprised with pentel colored pencils - they're great for detail work & blocking in color for beginners, imo. Very bright colors.

Faber Castell Polychromes, or just Polychromes in general. They've got much more pigment, though they may be more expensive.

I bought my pencils for $10.

Either that or watercolor pencils. Although cheap colored pencils have their merit, too. I like me some basic red/blue pencil for sketching.

What is best brand of watercolor pencils

The absurdly expensive Caran d'Ache Museum. Supracolors are a better purchase imho, with Faber-Castell's Albrecht Durer range coming in third, and then maybe Derwent.
