I always see doujinshi books for sale on ebay and being sold at komiket. How are they produced?

They use their version of Kinko's.

Or that's what Genshiken tells me.

Huh?
>>
>>2973854
Boy must that be weird to print doujins at kinkos
>>
>>2973881
its a printing service run by FedEx

>>2973852
I don't know how those specific books were made but there are self-publishing printing services online such as Blurb. You import your images, put the book together online or via Blurbs software and choose the type of backing, paper quality and size you want etc then send off for it. You can order in bulk I believe, or have your book sold through them. No idea what the terms are like regarding money etc.

Make a comic, then pay a book printer a thousand dollars or so to print some copies to sell. Most printers won't touch porn though.

Not OP, but I was unhappy with the quality of blurb for the price. Cheap cover paper and misaligned when following blurb's guidelines. I haven't tried any other book printers so can't suggest another, but I'd guess the quality of blurb was Office Depot-tier marked way up.

Look in /cgl/, on the artist alley thread.

Romance novels =/= porn doujins

Come on, anon. You should know this.
>>
Doujinpress used to print these if you payed them. Im not sure if theyre still around or not

They do not use Kinkos except for copybooks.

Its way more expensive per book, there are separate print houses specializing in doujinshi. Usually you can see them promote in the book credits or in the links section of an event website (e.g. Kemoket).

Example companies:
http://pico-net.com/doujinshi/
http://comflex-doujin.com/
http://www.print-walk.co.jp/
http://www.sungroup.co.jp/
>>
コピ本/Copybooks are made at convenience stores.

For the more standard/proper doujin production, its what >>2976152 said, and I usually see

http://www.shippo.co.jp/neko/
http://www.eikou.com/
as well.

Basically this is how it works in more detail (from my experience) for anyone who is interested:

Decide what you're going to make, and decide what size and colour; full colour or Greyscale? A lot of shops offer specialised options such as spot colour(like only using red) and other options like a Textured or Matte Lamination on the cover, which cost more.

The shops offer different types of binding, I went with the most common wireless/perfect binding. The sites I've seen all have a calculator that helps you calculate the spine of your book by the number of pages, and this is important because these printers have templates for you to use/follow.

Templates are usually in psd format in both cmyk and rgb(I guess people use SAI a lot?), and mention the colour settings you should be using for the best/most accurate results. Like Japan Colour something something. They have separate templates for book covers, with 2/4/6/etc. mm spine width, so you calculate and get the appropriate size for yours(rounded up) and put/do your cover illustration on it.

The template files have the bleed and safe areas marked out for you, with one layer you leave on above your artwork when you submit to help them cut the pages later. Done exporting those psds? Now then you look and get lost at the wide paper choices(not just gsm, but stuff like different shades and they're all in text only usually, so if you're indecisive you can spend a lot of time googling the paper names and deciding)

There are more additional options they offer, like having an extra blank piece of coloured paper at the front/back of the book before/after your content. Never tried but they do stuff like stamping, gold emboss, the works etc.

Continued:

You can choose between digital or offset printing usually, and the latter isn't that expensive actually especially if you print quite a bit. They have a lot of binding options, and I have a doujin artbook that was actually risoprinted which was quite cool. Compared to western cons where I see the same type(admittedly I don't live in burgerland, but it seems the same)of paper/material everytime there's an event.

They have packages for newbies that basically limits the types of paper and options they can choose and get a price discount. Speaking of discounts, if you submit early you can get around 10-20% off depending on how early you submitted your manuscript, and usually when you get your books (that can be arranged for a home or event delivery) you have a discount coupon that you can use for your next printing with the same company.
