What does /ic/ do to have fun while drawing? What do you anons do when you sit down and grab a pen and want to burn a good hour or two having fun making things you like?

I just put on some music and draw whatever I want, without regard for whether it's good or bad. Good way to discover new music too.
>>
>>2973594
how 2 draw bad htings without wanting 2 kill urself?
>>
Firstly: Put on this well known lo-fi hip hop beats stream https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OpIQNxiKJoE

> fun making things you like

I think it's important for people to have a queue of projects to get done. They can be anything, like making something based on a clever idea you had, or with a certain color you really like, or with some strong compositional elements you want to try out. I personally text myself ideas to do whenever I think of them, and then I can just go through that archived list whenever I want to start something new.

The point being that you always have something to move onto, and to look forward to - something you WANT to be doing. There shouldn't be any downtime where you're wondering "what should I make?". That should have been figured out previously.
>>
>>2973598
Uhh, I don't know. I'm not a good artist, so I guess it just makes sense drawings turn out not good. Also I'm just studying art for funsies and as a hobby during my own time, not to make it or become a professional, so I guess I have more patience with myself.

>>

Then you don't really love running. You just want the glory. But in your example that is motivation enough, no?
>>
>>2973631
Agreed. The fun in art has grown a bit dim for me lately. It's more of that feeling of relief or success, not really having fun. I would do anything to have fun with drawing though. There was a brief time of 12 hours that I truly enjoyed and had fun drawing (Because of drugs). Since then nothing quite like that has appeared.
>>
>>2973665
It's a creative process so unlike running it's not something you can force. Similar with writing. You can't just sit down and write until your hands bleed and expect a good result if you had no motivation or drive.

If you really want to draw and get then all that is left for you is to just study some technical aspect. Then hope for your motivation to return so you can use it for something creative.

But honestly, 12 hours is nothing and if that is all you have ever mustered then I don't think it is for you. The people who get good put in a lot more hours than that and they don't even notice the hundreds of hours because to them it wasn't a chore.
>>
>>2973579
I put on earbuds and listen to a podcast or some twitch stream in the background
it helps to stay focused for a long time

don't forget to make pauses tho, it's good to stop for 10 minutes and come back with a new look on what you're doing
>>
>>2973661
You have clearly never run a marathon.
I do not consider myself an athletic person. I hate sports and have always done it.

I have, however ran 6 marathons in the last 5 years, without having ever posted a selfie or telling people about it. I love what it does to my body, mind and life in general. I have found a job I enjoy thanks to those credentials (two of them have been barefoot).

This said, I hate the act of running. I don't like to move my body and it can get pretty painful over long distances.

I could easily see someone doing the same for art. Not having fun while doing the things they like
>>
>>2973686
I bet you just got into running so you could put random strangers on the internet back in their place!

Nah but more seriously that's pretty cool, how did you start marathon running if you hate the running part itself?

If you get to a point where you can do it for eight hours a day, then you're really cooking... That means getting good rest of course, so that you're not jet lagged and drinking fifteen cups of coffee in front of an open sketchbook.

I guess "fun" for me is seeing an analytical or conceptual concept coming together.
>>
>>2973686
I don't think you get the point. It's not about motivation of putting one foot in front of the other. It's about trying to force creativity.

And your goal with drawing isn't to stay healthy or anything like that so there's no side benefits for you to feel good about. If you had loved running then you would probably had been a lot better but you were likely just running against yourself to combat that belly.

Drawing is closer to a science than a sport. You analyses and solve problems, study, there is no obvious end in sight as you can't measure the time until you reach the finish line. A scientist who doesn't love his science is usually a pretty shitty scientist.

Comparing it to running is a really poor analogy.

Besides if you work out that much then your body becomes addicted to it.
>>
>>2973579
I practice drawing hands and anatomy in general. I try to draw a full body as quickly and accurately as possible and in all sorts of different poses. I enjoy it and I don't have to think too hard about it any more and it's good practice.
>>
when I smoke weed. I have severe problems focusing, but when I'm high I can easily spend the duration of the high (roughly 1 hour) drawing.
>>
>>2973579
Lately I've been spending time collecting references of what kind of thing I want to draw. Clothes, facial features, etc. Sometimes I'll draw from them other times it's just inspiration but it's been helping me actually enjoy my drawing.

Do you not OP? I may have been in your boat for a bit

It started way back when when I decided I wanted to draw pretty anime girls; and after getting my ass kicked and pushed around in 2011 /ic/ for a bit, I finally admitted I'd have to study and get good at drawing realistically and with strong fundamentals first before I could make those dank doujins.
For a good 2-3 years I wasn't happy with a single thing I drew because a) none of it was as good as my studies, and because of this I felt like not even bothering to put down pen to paper if everything would be shit and b) I didn't really have the well exercised creativity in my head at the time to really come up with things and then the skill to translate those to paper.

It sucked monolithic cock at first but after I improved a couple other things in my life and got into a steady schedule I started studying steadily for about 3 hours a day and forced myself to do 2 hours of imaginary work. After a good month of breaking myself in I started having a good time with my sketchbook and actually started looking forward to freetime/breaks so I could put down ideas into my sketchbook. I'm not where I want to be at the moment and still paying off school for now, but I'm a hell of a lot further than I thought I'd be

We're all gonna make it brahs

I put on classical music on youtube, such as https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EzeifvBH_cs

Or else a play list of something like Abba, or Blondie.

That's when I'm painting still lives in oil, of a night time.

adderall makes drawing fun

before you judge me, let me explain:

It's not the high of the drug that makes it fun, but on adderall you do kooky supplementary stuff that makes drawing fun.
I've made wacky gadgets like viewfinders,
per-spectacles (perspective spectacles, aka sharpie perspective grid drawn on lab glasses)
tracing my outline on the wall and counting how many heads high I am, tracing my hand and feet and doing measurements of those, setting up still lives like pic related (i'm about to draw this) posing nude for /ic/ drawthreads because the thought of helping others with their art makes me happy.

hmm, finding a new chair is fun, I'm sitting in a rocking chair someone threw out for maximum comfiness.
drawing with two pencils at once, drawing with both hands at once, doing a random scribble and then tracing it (how you get good shapes for graffiti actually)
graffiti is fun! asking a friend to pose for you, you'd be surprised how willing people are to help you.

I made myself a shitty disorganized random prompt generator in google sheets and I've actually been having a great time drawing some of the strange results. I usually pick one or two of the columns to combine rather than trying to do all of them, but it can get the juices flowing to try and draw something like "beach lich" or "cyberpunk cultist"
>>
>>2975275

not him but when I multitask podcasts I listen to stuff that isn't that important, usually I don't internalize much of it either, it's just background noise.
>>
>>2974146
This, but now that I dropped the weed my focus went with it. It's hard to really get absorbed in what I'm drawing now.

>>2975275
Podcasts help me because they're usually long and listening to someone talk about something interesting makes me sit still. No fidgeting with playlists, getting distracted with mood of music or any of that.
>>
>>2973579

go for it, the script at the top was literally the only part of it that even a programming-illiterate person like me had to google, the rest is literally just typing in prompts.

I know there's a way to program a button to get it to generate but I was too lazy to figure out how, so I just type a random thing and it re generates the tables.
>>
>>2973579
Music, podcasts, audiobooks, Netflix, and a large movie/tv collection and Plex. Usually music.

I honestly don't pay attention after a while, so music is best. I can't concentrate on an audiobook while working.

I used to listen to commentary videos but those killed my creativity with time (that's just my case) so I just listen to music. I had a huge artist's block and just got out of it by drawing sonic porn with a friend, not because it turns me on or anything but I do it with a friend and we meme up the whole process it's funny, fun and enjoyable

Stop getting sad and start getting mad at yourself. Nobody else is going to light that fire under your ass, so start using other people's skill as goals for your own. If you don't pump yourself up, nobody else will.

Overall health isn't important? Okay, Captain Cheetos. I vehemently disagree. I stay in shape, exercise, and eat healthy, so not only my body is in good shape, and I have the stamina to sit and paint for hours, but I also keep my brain running right - carb fog is not conducive to creativity.

Art is not a science. At all.

And there is nothing wrong with being addicted to working out. Being healthy is always better. Like anything, life is about balance - for ever hour you spend at the drawing board, you should be spending an hour working out, or reading, or playing an instrument, or seeing a concert.

Of all the bad ideas being thrown around this place, your post is definitely top 10.

For anyone facing creative block, go get the book The War of Art. It's a great book. All artists and creative people should read it.

>deliberate misinterpretations and bullshit

If art is not a science to you then you like haven't reached the point where you have started analyzing your own work so odds are that you are pretty shitty at art.

But thx for the over dramatic butthurt response.
>>
I know this comment will get a lot of shit, but since I stopped caring so much about getting good in time and reaching /ic/'s standards, I found myself enjoying art. I take my time to draw what I want and do deliberate studies if I hit a plateau on a subject. I think you can learn a lot without theoretical (book) knowledge and I'm done stressing over what fundamentals I lack in. Strive to improve, but don't let it consume you. It's not a race and most people don't get good in a year, even if that's what /ic/ wants to make you believe. Just relax and allow yourself to mess up. Keep a sketchbook.
>>
>>2979224

Being analytical isn't the only thing that makes something scientific, you know. Art is highly subjective.

If you think "social science" is a science, then ok, art is a science. It's not comparable shit like physics or biology.
