Maybe not the right thread but whatever.

I found a good deal on Copic markers and I want to buy a bunch but I'm not sure how deep to go.

I'd like to be able to do decently modeled skin since that's the hardest thing for me to accomplish with the Dr Martins stuff have, and I'd also like a decent selection of bold colors for spot coloring, sketches, etc. I already have some Neutral grays to get by on hand.

Advice from anyone here?

I'm a big marker fan myself. They are clean, discrete / contained, easy to blend and handle, they are really bright (I have a thing for loud colors), and they are refillable.

Things I don't like about copics: they aren't light fast (they fade a lot), markers bleed and need quality paper to blend, and can be pricey.

I really liked working in grey tones with some prisma markers, and that pretty much sold me on going full color - I picked copics because they were refillable. I'm also a pretty big tradfag so it makes the markers even more appealing to color inked drawings.

>good deal on Copic markers
What kind of deal did you find?
>>
>>2965931
>They are clean, discrete / contained, easy to blend and handle

This is why I want more. I love my Doc Martins but it's a pain to break out the brush, water, palette, etc even for a touch of color in a sketch, and if you just look at them the wrong way they misbehave and fuck your shit up.

>I'm also a pretty big tradfag so it makes the markers even more appealing to color inked drawings.

The one downside is they don't really play well with india ink, which is what I ink with. But I just bought a wideformat printer and discovered the ink is perfectly Copic proof, so I can scan my inks, process them into pure B&W, print them and use marker over them. So that's really pushing me to grab some.

>What kind of deal did you find?

Google " auc-terraformer"

They're a retailer on Rakuten that sells Sketches for 369 yen. With shipping it's around $3.50-3.75 a marker, US. As a CAD fag it comes out to about $5 each, which is way less than the $9 they typically cost up here.
>>
>>2965942
>bought a wideformat printer and discovered the ink is perfectly Copic proof
Same here anon. I recently got a printer and it's a huge level up.
>I sketch digitally
>print the sketch in light red and ink it
>scan the ink and clean it up in PS
>print the ink on heavy stock and color it with markers
>scan the final piece and adjust the colors as needed

>Doc Martins
I've always wanted to water color - I can't fill enough of the BG with the copics. It always feels like a waste of ink. Do you recommend WC for a marker enthusiast?

>$3.50-3.75 a marker, US
I got a lightly used set of ~100 off eBay for about the same amount. I found that mom's and scrap bookers sell off their barely used collections on eBay. If you are a good eBayer you can get them for $1.50-$2 USD (I was stalking previous wins). I was impatient with mine and just bought them.

Niggas who don't have a good printer are missing the fuck out. I scan and print at 11x17" all day long, it's luxury.

>Do you recommend WC for a marker enthusiast?

Yeah it's cool. Like I said it can be fiddly but for covering wide spaces there's nothing better. If you love bold colors check out the Dr Martins Radiant Concentrated. A 1/2oz bottle costs about $6 but they're highly concentrated and extremely vibrant. Pic related is the entire set.

>I got a lightly used set of ~100 off eBay for about the same amount.

That's a good deal. I could go that route, but I don't really want to buy a huge lot and with shipping costs it's not that great of a deal anyway.

Newmbie here, I'm trying to finish this lineart but I'm having trouble with the forearm on the right, basically I want it to be inclined in a 3D space and I'm failing to give it depth instead of making it look like it's a short forearm, as you can see from the colored lines I'd like the blue part to be in a simple 2D space, while the green part to be diagonally inclined towards the viewer.
Do you have any suggestions or tutorials to recommend? I did try building shapes but once the fact this is supposed to be a sweater is giving me trouble.

Version without the lines: http://imgur.com/a/TJ2V9

Also any other criticism towards the rest of the work is welcome (I personally think the neck is too tall and I'm going to check later if shortened looks better), this is my second drawing so far so I'd like to improve.
>>
>>2966175
Oh, of course the collar makes no sense because that part of the lineart is incomplete.

May be this is not the right thread but this is worth a separate post i will just ask it here:

Ended up staying awake and finishing it.

I see some parts I could've done better and that I need to work on but i'm happy to finish a piece. Sometimes that's half the battle and i'm a firm believer that finishing pieces more often will help form good habits so that's my goal right now.

Now it's time for bed. Can I get crits more so on the coloring than on the anatomy since I know faces are kind of a weak point for me?

Don't make the background the same hue as the character. Choose a complimentary color and make it less saturated. Also added an overlay to create vignetting, and overlayed the character to add more contrast.

Find a nice pattern in google, put in a layer above the base color of the wall, clip the layer, put the layer mode in multiply, screen, lighten or whatever works better for your piece, lower the opacity to 75, 50 or 25%. Put a layer above the pattern layer and paint on it.

The important part is using the layer modes, opacity and paint over to make the pattern look natural

Now that you lined it up, decide if you want to polish the turd or not (pls dont). Compare youre drawing's gestures, forms, and perspective with information inbooks. Perform the two poses infront of the mirror and really think about how pespective applies to each part of the body.

Its up to you if you want to improve. Maybe redo this drawing in a month or two to see if youve made slight improvements
>>
>>2968460

Ok "professor," I don't mean to be hostile, but your "advice" fails to deliver any specific insight whatsoever about the illustration on question.

You could copy and paste that bullshit boilerplate response to any drawing in the world, regardless of subject.

That doesn't constitute a critique whatsoever.

Specificity is key. Accuracy would be good too, but that would be setting the bar pretty high.
>>
>>2968474
You're going to look back at how bad that drawing is one day and cringe. I did. What you should do is move on and just double, tripple down on studies at this point. Forget drawing things you like. It sucks but you have to make the leap or you will be stuck in flat hell. Your drawing is like a compressed image, that resulted from a 3d image in your mind into something that you couldn't adequately process into something that translated. You need to work on your translation of form and idea into something that resembles reality.

>>
>>2968474
>>2968525
First of all, don't listen to this retard. Keep drawing things you like. If you want to improve your animu drawings, the most efficient way to do so is by doing it in conjunction with your loomis studies.

Second, since you asked for specificity i'll tell you what's wrong. 1.) You don't understand head construction, the skull of the orc isn't foreshortened properly and the female on the ground has a fucked up skull as well. Draw skulls, study their proportions and apply it to anime or whatever. 2.) You don't understand hair design. It just seems like you're drawing random strands of hair without paying attention to the design and functionality. Krenz cushart and reiq both have hair design tutorials, google that. 3.) You don't understand rhythm. Avoid drawing symmetrical lines because it makes your poses look stiff. Look up hampton 4.) I'm tired and in a hurry and aside from what I mentioned there are problems with your anatomy, your proportions, the way you draw fabric, your posing and much more. Finish the piece and once you do grind out these weaknesses.

I get the feeling that you're going for a kind of sultry pose. Raising a shoulder next time would help convey that to the viewer, as right now she looks a bit stiff. Giving her mouth a hint of a smile to make her look inviting and raising the high of her eyelid creases relative to her eyelashes gives a hotter half open eyes look. Another thing you could do with the pose which I didn't have time to demonstrate was to have her left arm rest on her breast as well, and 'push it' slightly, to give the viewer a sense of their softness.

Shes a real qt anon, a few things I'd point out would be.

Make the eye smaller, I'm not sure if you drew the other one underneath but if you did you would see that you would either have not enough room on her face or have them be too close together.

Emphasize showing form with different sorts of cues. I added a school emblem on her chest to show the curvature of its surface

(1) I showed the underside of her hand and it curling around the pole.

(2) I had the folds wrap around the form of her arms, imagining them as cylinders. You shouldn't be afraid to show fold lines running across her entire arm, simply adding random curves along the outside won't be enough to give a sense of depth.

Also I notice that your linework is very clean but lacks life because its all the same width. Vary it, use heavier lines to set apart different parts of the image for a clearer read, use lighter lines for details.

(3) This is seen in a lot of traditional manga work, where lines of wet ink tend to pool a bit. You can replicate this in digital inking by just spending a bit of extra time to ink the corner where the lines meet, and this can be used for showing where very minor shadows would be, such as between her collar and neck, between her fringe and forehead etc.

>>2968792

I would actually say the main problem with this image isn't that the figures themselves are stiff, but the interaction between them is flat. Although you've used a perspective grid and set everything correctly, the way you've presented the scene to the viewer is flat. Neither figure is truly in the foreground or background in a sense with the only cue being that the ogre's right leg is covered by the elf and the interaction between the two is a simple left to right across the canvas. Repositioning the viewer more to either the left or right of the scene would give the depth you need to make your composition more dynamic.

cool idea, i think the pixelly background needs to compromise somehow to fit the girl a bit better, obviously they are supposed to be in contrast but i think the effect might be a bit jarring atm. i'm not sure what you might do to remedy it, perhaps add lines in there somewhere, or perhaps even a little bit less saturation would do it, maybe even change the shape of the pixels.

help. working from a ref but she looks so off. can you guys pinpoint it?
>>
>>2972280
your lack of fundamentals is what's off

it looks like you're trying to directly copy an image and hoping something will click
>>
>>2972290
i do study fundies. be specific
>>
>>2972290
How to give proper critique:

Point out what is being done well. Point out what's not being done well. Be specific. Just saying "Study fundamentals" doesn't help. Is it the perspective? Is her overall facial structure off even for a stylized piece? Is it just the eyes?

Samefagging so I can give a better reply, hard to type on my tablet.

Im not directly copyng the image and changed a few things like the hair and lighting. I'm looking at the picture to keep in mind the photo i stylized it from.

I can handle criticism but if you give a shitty critique (i.e. don't critique it at all) then it doesn't help me know what to look on and study more because fundamentals covers so much from perspective, life drawing, still life drawing, etc

Basically, if the only answer I ever get is "fundamentals" even after I come fresh off a fundie session, that doesn't tell me what i'm doing wrong at all.
>>
>>2972297
>look on
What to WORK on.

I'm going to bed.
>>
>>2972297
>shitty critique

no one is entitled to coddle you with a 'good critique'. You come across like one or two good people that is willing to invest their time in telling you what you need to work on specifically but it all just boils down to "fundamentals, fucking idiot" when someone is critiquing something that's at your level of artwork.

If you lack the eyes to be able to tell for yourself how shit your drawing is and how you can fix it and literally rely on other people to point out your own mistakes then you didn't study your fundamentals like you say you do.

For example, you say you study fundamentals but then you proceed to jump to fine line details as if you looked at your muddy colors and thought that was a good starting point to add fine details and rendering.
>>
>>2972302
By that logic there's no point in /ic/ then, retard. If you spend enough time staring at your own work, it gets hard to see what's wrong with it. That's why peer reviews and critiques exist in the first place.

What fine details are you talking about? This project is about 5 hours in currently and has been through a few revisions already (The nose was in the wrong perspective originally for awhile for instance).

Seriously dude who pissed in your cereal to make you this much of a jackass?

If you don't want to give a critique then try this: Don't come to /ic/ which is where people come for critique.

If you can't type even one specific word about what's wrong with it fundamentally how can i trust you to not be one of the trolls or retard faggots that can't even draw themselves?
>>
>>2966325
I really do need to sleep now but anon, this is an example of my finished work.

I got decent critiques on this that recognized my skill level and i've been keeping what has been said about it in mind moving forward, but a lot of the in-progress critiques still only said "fundamentals" which doesn't help.

When i started the piece we're arguing about, it was on the tails of a lot of facial studies and I used one of the studies as the base for this pic because I liked how it turned out.

So literally saying fundamentals tells me nothing about what's wrong with it.

I recognize there's problems with it but at my skill level I don't know what specifically is making it look so off.

Hence why I need a specific critique. I'm not trying to be a pissbaby about it but i hate how most of /ic/ doesn't know how to give critique (Because there IS a right and wrong way to do it).

Now either help me or shut up and post your own work instead of shitting on a beginner for wanting to know what specifically is off because even professionals can use with a brush up on fundamentals once in awhile.

this is the last post i'm going to make bitching about it.

Maybe it's because i've been on /ic/ since 07, when people actually did redlines and gave helpful critique to help one another improve.
>>
>>2972307
>/ic/ is where people go to get critiques

>how can i trust you to not be one of the trolls or retard faggots that can't even draw themselves?
It doesn't take an artist to tell your that your nose is weird or that the fact that the shading looks elementary. If you honestly disregard some line of criticism just because you think that person doesn't draw better than you (and judging by your art, they probably do) then you need to step down from your high horse.

And seriously? You can't even tell that you added fine details to your own piece of shit artwork? Are you so inept at drawing you are not able to see the tiny lines of hair you decided to add and the thin lines you used to denote your shading on your hair and eyebrows? how about the fact that you tried to complicate the shading in your hair even though your light source doesn't exist and everything is pillow shaded? You don't consider all that fine detail?

If someone told an artist who didn't decide to add all that shit that they needed to revise an aspect of their drawing they wouldn't have a hard time erasing that part and redoing it until it looked ready for more detail, but for someone like you the first thing that'll pop into your head is "shit now I have to re-add all those tiny lines and redraw the eye all over again motherfuck"

The colors look muddy, the lighting makes no sense, your nose looks like it's caving into the face and the ear looks like it was glued onto the side of the head and is just sitting on top of the hair.

And you're telling people to stay out of /ic/?

>5 hours
>Maybe it's because i've been on /ic/ since 07

Jesus fucking christ dude, this is /ic/, no one is here to be nice to you, we're here to help.
So that guy wasn't being specific, that’s annoying, but he definitely wasn't wrong. Usually when someone here says "fundamentals" it's just a polite way of saying you're wasting your time on eyelashes when you haven’t grasped the anatomy or you haven’t constructed shape and lighting structures. In your case it’s a bit of both. But since you want specifics I did a redline for you.
Look at the first drawing I did on the left, it's gross to look at, but necessary to establish the planes of the face so you can properly render the lighting, the face you drew, especially the eyes, are flat as shit. Once you have these structures in place then you can spend 5 hours frosting your turd. The drawing on the right is just to show what can you do with that structure, and ways you can improve on her hair and push the emotional quality of the image: furrowing her brow, focusing her dead lifeless eyes, adding a slight frown, etc. I also included this drawing to show that a good structure is still extremely helpful even for a stylized drawing.
I really think you should re-read some of the books (I’m just assuming you’ve read most of them at least once) in the sticky and to only paint in black in white for now. You're having enough trouble creating a coherent value structure let alone properly dealing with color temperature.

Also make sure next time to resize your images appropriately (and ffs don’t sign them.)
>>
>>2972311
>If someone told an artist who didn't decide to add all that shit that they needed to revise an aspect of their drawing they wouldn't have a hard time erasing that part and redoing it until it looked ready for more detail, but for someone like you the first thing that'll pop into your head is "shit now I have to re-add all those tiny lines and redraw the eye all over again motherfuck"

I wish there was more emphasis on detail progression, so many beginning artists polishing piles of shit because they jumped onto details too early.

im gonna start the coloring over...
>>
>>2972373
Sorry to double-post it's just impossible to type on my tablet.
>>2972360
So first of all, THANK you. I don't care if people are nice, I just think that site-wide we should strive to actually give critiques. If you don't want to spend the time to give one, then not commenting is sometimes better. Just because the board is shit doesn't mean we should be okay with it being shit.

That being said, thank you. I posted the original sketch because I think a lot of the problem is me not really knowing how to color since I don't think the sketch looks terribly far off from your re-draw on the right (Parts I'll fix will definitely be the eyes and maybe lengthen the face. Am I just blind to how bad it really is?

I want to defend two things though
>In 2007 I was underaged ban in middle school, didn't post, and my pictures looked like this. I didn't take drawing seriously until I was 20, and even then didn't start studying until last year because of real-life shit that was affecting my focus (abusive relationship, 'nough said)

>The so-called detail work

Those aren't the final lines for the eyes and were more of a guideline because I can't color with the sketch as an overlay because my sketches are too messy, so I just do quick lines to give me an idea of how to color, and would eventually replace them with better lines or remove the lines entirely because i'm trying to do lineless coloring. So i didn't spend an hour getting those lines done, i did them in two minutes and proceeded on to coloring.

What I should've spent more time on was making sure the sketch was correct. This is a stylized study so it's not 100% accurate to the photo because, well, it's the stylization thread. I'm not going for photo-realism, but i don't really know how to render in a stylized way.

I think i'll take your advice and do some black and white studies though before I take another hand at the coloring.
Also...where the fuck did I sign it?
Sorry on the resizing tho.

A better term for “lineless coloring” would just be painting. And if you’re not going to have lineart don’t waste time on a sketch you’re just going to paint over anyways.

Personally I think you should work out each plane of the face before adding in values, differentiate each plane with a hard edge, no blending yet. Once you’ve done that, anything in the light should be white, anything in the shadows should be black and then from there work your way into the grays, this will keep your light logic solid, which is the most important. Only once you have all your values down, then you can start blending edges, (remember just like light and dark you to contrast soft and hard edges). Once you have a solid grayscale painting you can worry about adding hue and color temperature.

This is a layer by layer approach, which is different than what you were doing earlier, but easier to think about. When you paint directly every time you make a mark you need to be thinking about the correct hue (to fit your color temperature), value (to fit your lighting structure), texture (to keep painting style consistent), and the actual shape of the brushstroke itself (to build up from your under-drawing AND to push into the next plane to deal with your edges). On top of all of that, you’re drawing while you paint, the under-drawing only serves as a guide. Needless to say its much harder.
“The older I become, the more I realize that drawing is the most important of all the problems of picture-making." Joaquin Sorolla said that, so I’d say work on that drawing, get those planes down, triple check the anatomy, look at references, don’t suck.

> Also...where the fuck did I sign it?
I was talking about the piece you posted in this thread.

Definitely the cheekbones themselves, but studying the structure of the face as a whole is very useful. Here is a site that lets you freely manipulate a 3d head model. Compare it to anime artists you like and try spot what stylistic choices they've made, what they've simplified or exaggerated.

https://sketchfab.com/models/6238cb4ace5d4a9aa9a881ec800dbdd1

A lot of your lines end in points and don't connect with each other. Turn off pressure-size sensitivity and aim for more controlled strokes. Don't overemphasize the size of the eyes, in most anime art they're actually much smaller than that. Avoid overly simple and sharp shapes in the hair. Don't rely on a siimple 't' shaped set of guidelines to draw a face, draw in the side plane of her head, try make the eyes similar in size, mark down two 'orbits' or eye sockets so you can have a firm foundation for drawing the eyes on top.

I want to start getting into some more extreme foreshortening/hyper angle type drawings, though this is pretty lightweight as far as I'm concerned

There are many issues in even such a small piece. If I could give generic advice first: read Perspective Made Easy. These are very beginner mistakes you can easily train out of your system and never make again in just a few days

Specifically though? Biggest flaw is that there are multiple eye levels. Your drawing is in 2 point, and in 2 point there is only one horizon line, and in 2 point the horizon line is also the eye level. Take a look at my red & blue lines. The Vanishing point for the bar counter is in red. And where that VP is, there is the horizon line. The horizon line is also the eye level, so anything ABOVE the horizon line is something we're looking UP at. The cabinet in the background I lined in blue, because even though, based off the counter top we should be looking UP at it, it looks like we're really looking down on it, because its vanishing points converge at a point above the horizon line of the counter.

I mean that's one flaw. A major flaw. But as you can see by the line on the bottom of the counter there's really no consistency here at all. Things are roughly trying to go to a vanishing point but nothing really does. Needs more draftsmanship.

If you want to improve it, set the eye level, pick 2 VPs, make everything go to them consistently (the counter, cabinet, chairs, and walls should all share the same VP), use straight lines, and take your time.
