FAQ:
Something's broken, what do I do?

>The original developer of the site has taken a leave for quite a while, originally due to medical reasons. Progress on the site is almost non-existant at this point. You can try contacting him at @LavaFlake or emailing him at [email protected].

What do we draw?

>Whatever you want. At this point there's no required topic so draw your heart out. Make sure you submit at least a half hour of work or you may get a low effort warning.

What's a low effort warning?

>The goal is to get people to draw every day by turning it into a competition. The low effort warning system is to prevent people from posting last minute, quick sketches when they're feeling lazy. If you receive a warning and it happens again within a month you'll be eliminated.

>This rule has been the cause of a lot of concern amongst newer artists so let me reiterate: this system is to police low effort content and has nothing to do with the quality of the work. New artists are more than welcome.

What happens if I'm eliminated?

>Your streak will go back to 0 and you will have to start again. No other penalties.

How can there be a new Last Artist Standing challenge every week?

>There is no week system anymore, instead new users are given "streaks" based on the number of consecutive days you can submit without getting eliminated. (token losses do not reset your streak)

Will I have an advantage if I join later in the week?

>The winner of a Last Artist Standing will be the artist with the longest streak. If you join on day 1 and last until day 85 then you'll have a streak of 85. If there's only one person left in the challenge when you're eliminated but they joined on Day 7 then they'll need to continue on for another week. If they're eliminated before then, you win.

That's a kind advice but I've drawn for so long time and read to many books in the last two years. I lurked a lot in /beg/ and all - I dunno at this point I just kinda accepted that I'm a pretty untalented heck. I worked through Hampton multiple times, drawing with the right side of the brain (though this was a bit of a waste of time), of course good old Loomis, Houstons videos, Proko's stuff, Alphons Dunn, perspective tutorials, a noble approach, colours for the realistic painter or whatever the name of that book is.

I think in the past year I improved more than ever before and I want to keep that going, but I'm also really at peace with a lot of things. Besides, I just really stubbornly want to finish me comic.

Still lurking around here and being called an autist from time to time or getting suicide recommended as a solution for all my problems kinda helped me to focus a lot more on learning new things. Maybe I can only learn through pain.

Not really the case anymore, aesthetics sensibilities have changed since then. I like pastels and earth tones but i also like bright 80's esque colors now.

I couldn't tell you how to do this, but the reason it looks that way is because the lines are drawn over multiple times/ chickenscratched or multiple contours are inaccurate.

It's very hard to describe, though; it's mainly a bad habit I developed before discovering /ic/.

I am severely unimaginative and so find it difficult to develop sounds designs that are innovative. The demonstration I was trying to make because was not a narrative decision because neither do I have a firm grasp on human relations (am I even a human myself?) or how culture and occupation may affect what the character wears. I asked myself how there can be so many distinguishable likenesses in visual experience and found it frustrating that the variation is becoming cosmetic and environmental as well; this was quite irrelevant but it did make me investigate briefly how I could conceive things as distinguished by the orientation and position of the landmarks of the face, often resulting in aliens that look nothing like humans. I tried to avoid designing clothing to start with, because I haven't internalised any of the necessary skeletons (in figure drawing) to determine how cloth might fold around the figure. If you look at it the only clothing items looks exceptionally flat and as a result so does the whole area the clothing conceals. My other limitations were to not use colour and to not use values. A certain androgynous likeness appears here after accounting what qualities might potentially disturb the extreme heroic attitude suggested while typically observing humans, black hair of a considerable length to try and imply frustration without resolve or care. Long hair was selected perhaps because I myself have long hair, and am too lazy to cut it; I'm often easily frustrated, easily intolerant. Through using hair, which is an easy area of the body to give maintenance to, and not doing so: the figure could perhaps gain a similar sense of disorganization, upset maintenance. I dismissed as much cultural and religious influence from the picture as I could

Finlay here; the first and probably the most condemning is that I partook in a graphic design course. Aside from that: Art is anecdotally the only discipline I've ever got paid for, and most people I know either recognise me as an Artist or a cartoonist (I used to attempt to draw cartoons, long before I came here and long before I knew Artistic principles even existed). In this context it would make no sense for me to quit, even if I truly am the worst /LAS/sie, because it suits my lifestyle and what other people expect of me.

But you should take some pointers from this. Here you use nice clean lines which makes it easy to understand what you are looking at, and the simple characters gives them attitude and life.

You do whatever you want. It's your life. But I would try and go back to something like this that's aesthetically more cartoony than what you do today. Especially when it comes to clear and simple shapes. Have you read Usagi Yojimbo? Stan Sakai is a master when it comes to stuff like that.

I basically got none either. I managed to make some artist friends in middle/high school, but the only one I hung onto only draws Undertale au art and stick figures, and has basically no ambition to improve. I have a sister who's good at honestly, and is better than me in some areas, so that's helped though. I've had a lot more luck with making artist friends online than irl, it seems a lot easier that way.

Yeah, lots. I went to a preliminary art school and gained lots of friends there whom I still hang out with.

Also for a short time I was on the board for a small contemporary art gallery and digital arts workshop, where I met and befriended lots of people who are into art.
But it was all fairly amateurish and small scale. Not that there is anything wrong with that.

Well, i have one friend who constantly brags about his knowledge, and only appreciates canvas as medium because "everything else is so fucking easy." And surprise, he's shittier than a lowest tier lassie.

I can deal with his annoying comments about art, but it gets really annoying when he starts talking about music. Rather than saying "you've done the anatomy wrong" that will just lead to him saying it's purposely incorrect
Vaguely say "Tell me about the anatomy" or something, lure him to boast about how correct the anatomy is and then point out that it's wrong.

2 years ago I had a cancer scare and it made me understand that no matter how shitty life gets you're still alive and being alive is always a good thing.

When it comes to art it's something I just have to do, like shitting or jacking off. It's this release that has to happen. Sure, sometimes I'll not art for weeks, but in the end I'll always come back to it. No matter if I want to or not.

If you are suffer from depression I highly recommend finding a therapist. Taking medication and therapy was the only the that helped me.

Besides if your art "depresses" you maybe overthink your use of Social Media/Art sharing sites. Constantly refreshing and checking how your art is doing, how many likes etc. you have, if a LASSIE is asking for your blog or not might have an additional negativ effect on you.

Stay healthy anon, eat right and do some sport, socialize and stay strong.

I dunno, every day I look less and less forward to drawing and making sure I have something to submit.
Though I do realise that the moment I pick up the pencil, I forget most of the pain and draw my shitty drawings and I forget everything that hurts, or perhaps I'm just replacing my daily frustrations with other frustrations, like the inability to draw well.

I just try to keep pushing forward. There's days where it gets really bad and I can barely get myself to draw but I do it anyway, even if it's just scribbles. In terms of motivation I always think back to this memory I have when I was in the third grade and I declared that I was going to be a "cartoonist". Then I think back on other memories like getting a comic published in the school newspaper or winning some money from an art contest, etc. Small reaffirmations that I'm going down the right path and that I'm doing right by my past self. Idk, I guess I've let myself down so much already, It'd be nice if I didn't fail that little kid too.
