Opposite for me.

After working as an illustrator and realizing how much time finishing something really takes, I stopped caring much about technique and skills. Just spend long enough editing and tinkering time and everything can be fixed. It's not very impressive.

Yes, even mere rocks can look gorgeous when Sargent paints them, but at the end of the day they are just fucking rocks.

What really matters is the ideas. The heart. Some artists have ambition 10 times greater than their skill. That is more important for me than mere rendering. Nowadays I can fap to hentai done in mspaint if the heart is on point.

I see how writing is much more important lately. All the pretty art and precise fundamentals can't replace good characterization, absorbing plots, humor, wit, heart, world building, etc

That doujin on the right as really nice, couldn't really fap to it but I did appreciate the uniqueness of it's setting.

The difference here is that both of those have some basic understanding of how the human body is put together but cannot necessarily represent it on paper, the OPM strip especially. The doujin, especially the anatomical correctness of things (hands, ears) makes me think that's the style rather or a bad case of Parkinson's rather than inability.

I love thicc just as much as anyone else, but they don't know anatomy. The thighs don't overlap even though one is turned, which means when she's facing straight, she has a huge gap, which wouldn't be possible. Her pelvis overall and her hips/thighs are just wrong. Her boobs connect directly to the armpit instead of leading to it (I don't know how to explain it well.) And the most egregious thing is the side face. But perfect execution of a dull subject will still be dull. While subpar execution of an interesting subject will be sorta interesting.
Perfect execution of an interesting topic is by far the best, but in terms of ability, having a bit above average skill (not that hard) but using it to produce something interesting is far better than 50 years worth of mastering skills being used to paint [generic anime girl standing on blank background with a slightly lewd pose]

How is someone supposed to know the exact level of lighting required for this piece when there's no lighting source present in the picture?

Is it supposed to signify the viewer of the painting opening a door and light shining through? If so, I don't think the lighting is done properly. The right side of Satan's torso or whoever that is should be shining brightly since he is literally looking at the viewer (and possible light source), and not simply his back. His back being lit suggests lighting is coming from the left, but that doesn't explain why he's looking at the viewer who is coming in from the center.
