Can we please have a thread dedicated to drawing hands?
Do you have any special techniques when drawing hands?

Watch Proko's videos!
>>2957684
I already watched Proko's videos, Vilppu's videos and Hampton's videos on hands, I have the theory and the antomy down, but actually drawing it is really fucking nervewrecking.
The biggest problem I have is drawing foreshortened fingers or, to be more precise, drawing fingers in the "right direction".
pic related from Hampton's video, it looks so easy to place the fingers in a realistic manner, but they always look "off", they look unrealistically bent or the proportions look off.

Want my advice? If your forms look wonky think less about construction for a while and focus on getting the 2d shape and gesture right at first. Analytical drawing is advanced stuff.

i think looking at the hands by artists you like is very useful, more so than many other subjects. for you will see many ways in which they make the process easier for themselves, having a repertoire of 'hand poses' they reuse a lot, manners in which they make simplified hands convincing and attractive, and so forth. and with many artists you are likely to see many mistakes that you would not have noticed without close consideration, which may set your mind at ease as to your own difficulties.
Observe actual hands from life. Use a mirror and draw your own a lot. I think the constructions set out by Bridgman/Hogarth/Loomis/whoever are good but ultimately if you follow it to a T then you get weird looking things. Just use their ideas as guides in your head as you draw what they actually look like.

I've always wondered. What's the difference between feminine hands and masculine hands?
>>2959621
Feminine hands are slender, small, and soft
Masculine hands are rough, large, and knobbly.
>>2959624
This plus the more veins you detail the older the hand looks.
>>2957752
You can feel from the drawing how much fun the artist had while drawing it.
>>2959665
>tfw have had super veiny hands ever since I was a kid

i wouldnt say female hands are softer that depends on the individual body type, weight, age, lifestyle, entirely. as fore female hands being more slender it's total misinformation, they are not, if anything being smaller they have less chance of being slender and more chance of being pudgy/looking like little sausages. but yes they are 1. less wide 2. smaller.

*with fingers looking like little sausages, kek
>>2957726
not picture where they're just drawing hands though. ones where the hands are incidental.

Good idea, anon!
I'll dump some hand tutorials as well.

That's it for tutorials. I'll continue posting hand illustrations/ drawn references.
The posted tutorials are of varying insight and quality. If you want a short anatomical breakdown look up the hands chapter in Hampton's Design And Invention. If you want to go deeper into the subject, read Loomi's book on How To Draw The Face And Hands. For a more anatomical approach look into Bridgman's A Hundred Hands.

Aight, that's it. Have fun drawing hands everyone!
Thought this was really useful to me.
>>2959813
Fucking hell. Might look good on a monster design but I feel bad for anyone who has varicose veins this bad.
>>2959812
does this actually work?
>>2960375
I dunno, maybe try it and see for yourself if it works.
>>2960375
Provided you know the proper anatomy of the arms, perspective, and how they bend, you'll connect the dots.
>>2957682
Only special technique I use is draw shitloads of hands. It's my go-to thing to draw in the margins when I'm bored in class since I always have my own hands to use as reference.
>>2959813
Here have a higher res of that~
I love Dishonored
>>2957682
From a 100 hand challenge i did, all heavily referenced from Bridgeman
I really gotta HAND it to you guys, great stuff here.
>>2960375
It does, to a point. I've been doing that and most of the time it works, at least to give you an idea of the perspective you're working with.
