How to do head turns?

I'm struggling with head turns, what's a good book that will help with the subject?

I'm currently going through Loomis's Drawing the Head and Hands and Burne Hogarth's Drawing the Human Head. While the latter has some really great methods on dealing with how much cranial mass should be shown in the back based on the amount of turn in the pose, I am struggling in figuring out how to properly place the contours of the foreshortened forms of the eyes, nose, and mouth barrel.

I specifically struggle in placing eyes based on head turn. I have seen many diagrams showing axis lines hinting how to place eyes on a turned head (like pic related) but my heads just don't turn out that way. There is some bit of knowledge I'm missing in order to check my eyes are correctly placed. Eyes are easy in a purely front or side-view but as soon as the head turns and the nose starts to overlap and the eyes themselves foreshorten, everything falls apart.

Are you constructing the eyes properly and drawing through everything? If you draw the eyes as spheres and the nose as a pyramidal shape then you should be able to properly rotate those in perspective and place them correctly.

If you post your work I could point out what exactly looks off to me or what you may be having trouble with.

I think my issue lies with rotating simple shapes in perspective, would you be able to recommend a good book on how to rotate boxes/ellipses in perspective?

I'm guessing the Scott Robertson book, right?

Nah, that's a bit more advanced and it's geared more towards constructing mechanical things like vehicles. I think the Peter Han course/draw a box would be helpful and you could just study some basic perspective. You could try Ernest Norling's "perspective made easy" or Marshal Vandruffs perspective video series. Both aren't too long and give you the basics of perspective. From there it's more about practicing and grinding it more than anything since the basics of perspective aren't too difficult to understand. Just try to draw like 200 boxes and pages and pages of ellipses/spheres and your understanding of 3d shapes will go through the roof. I "understood" perspective for a while but it wasn't until I did pages and pages of basic shapes that I truly began to internalize it and do a better job of it. You just gotta draw a shit ton of them to get a better understanding of form and go from there.

I went through that book in full, it's a nice light-weight primer on perspective but it does not provide methods for rotating objects (outside of short explanation of mechanical perspective).

Yeah he has a whole course. I think you can downlaod it on cgpeers. Drawabox(website) is basically the same thing but it's by some guy who studied under him for a few months. The intro lessons on there go over basic shapes, form and perspective. They're pretty helpful, the later lessons on anatomy, composition, etc aren't too good tho so I'd recommend you do he first couple lessons and then move on to something else.

Hmm, I read Loomis's Fun with a Pencil and he details a method of drawing objects in a scene from a bird's eye floor plan. Maybe that same method will help me with head turns.

I feel like most people just rotate things by eye. You don't really need to be super exact, just know that the vps are on the horizon and move em around.

I don't know if that'd be helpful for heads. Seems too tedious and rigid when you wanna go loose and flowy with organic things like heads.

Imagine or construct a simple skull when you draw.

I like to simplify the face into the forehead, eye area, and the cheekbones. The cheekbones are key for drawing different angles. Many people will forget them. They are like a shelf for the eyes and forehead.

I drew an example of how I draw heads from imagination. Do not use this as direct reference because the heads are a little wonky, but I hope people get the idea.
