>>
>What's your age/ gender/ occupation?
23, male, graphic designer

>What other (art related) sites beside /ic/ do you frequent? Do you have a blog?
No other sites, no blog.

>Do you have a drawing routine or schedule?
Not a fixed schedule, but I try to draw something every day.

>How much time do you spend drawing?
On a good day, 4-5 hours. On a bad day 1-2.

>Are you satisfied with your work ethic?
Yes, but if I were more structured, I could get more done. Also if I could get out of my house to a place where I could sit down, undisturbed and draw, that would be great. My house has too many distractions.

>Who's your biggest influence/ favorite artist?
I'm not sure, realist art inspires me a lot though.

>What are your (art related) goals?
Make a living off it, tell stories, teach others.

>When did you start drawing? Why did you start?
18. I had always liked drawing but realized it was possible to actually be good if I devote half as much time to drawing as I do to all the pointless things I do.

>Did you decide to make it your profession? If so, when?
No. Draw for fun and learn for fun.

>Did /ic/ play a role in your decision?
Didn't know about /ic/ at that point.

>Do you find yourself getting frustrated about your art lately?
Not progressing at the pace I want to and constantly drawing the same thing over and over again.

>If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
Stronger work ethic, start more seriously practicing what I preach.

>What's the best/ worst thing about /ic/?
Best, people are unapologetic about their criticism. Worst, people have a defeatist attitude and and actively tell people that they will never make it.

>If you could change one thing about this board, what would it be?
More moderation. Delete threads like "just drew this what do you think?"
>>
>What's your age/ gender/ occupation?

>Do you have a drawing routine or schedule?
study when i have free time, mix in personal work at some point

not enough

almost, almost becoming efficient
>Who's your biggest influence/ favorite artist?

>What are your (art related) goals?
either take it far enough that i can be part of a project of my own making one day

>When did you start drawing? Why did you start?
been drawing for the fun of it since high school, improved a lot since end of last year since i went digital but have only just started studying
>Did you decide to make it your profession? If so, when?
no, im pursuing a more secure career but i have lots of time and it's lowkey my dream
>Did /ic/ play a role in your decision?
it helps me believe i can improve a lot faster, so, to a degree
>Do you find yourself getting frustrated about your art lately?
nope! studying has convinced me i can do more than i am right now. it's very fun.
counter strike is distracting, however.
>If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
art wise: when i started
me wise: i don't know, how much body hair i grow? i'm really happy with myself in almost all regards
Bonus:
>What's the nest/ worst thing about /ic/?
this typo in the question is the best and worst thing.
(the board encourages people to focus on their skills which is good, and honestly its kind of funny when artists get torn apart. maybe i'll get tired of the shitposting and that'll be the worst part. hard to pick one thing right now.)
>If you could change one thing about this board, what would it be?
i want loomis to wordfilter to proko and proko to wordfilter to god
>>
>What's your age/ gender/ occupation?
35/male/systems integrator
>What other (art related) sites beside /ic/ do you frequent? Do you have a blog?
A bunch of stuff, I watch a lot of youtube howtos and try to follow along. I've got a gallery, but blogs are for fags.
>Do you have a drawing routine or schedule?
It was 1hr of gestures, 1hr of value study, rest of the night whatever I felt like. Now a days though, it's go home and do jack shit.
>How much time do you spend drawing?
On the days I can, 5ish hours, but most days these days is not at all.
>Are you satisfied with your work ethic?
Not even a little.
>Who's your biggest influence/ favorite artist?
I don't really have a favorite, but I really like the baroque period of paintings.
>What are your (art related) goals?
I don't really have one, other than a general desire to get good. I've got some thoughts on projects, but they're little more than just loose ideas rattling around in my dome.
>When did you start drawing? Why did you start?
About 4 or 5 years ago. I had just quit WoW, and in a broader sense, videogames. I had seen some others drawing and they made it look easy, so I bought a bamboo and started my adventures in art.
>Did you decide to make it your profession? If so, when?
No, I make a good paycheck doing my regular job. I'd have to get into patreon's top 5 list to make a comparable paycheck.
>Did /ic/ play a role in your decision?
Not so much, but the sticky has been super helpful.
>Do you find yourself getting frustrated about your art lately?
Always.
>If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
Gain eye-hand coordination.

Bonus:
>What's the nest/ worst thing about /ic/?
Eh, it's super rare that I post here, besides you have content bans on art, is anyone supposed to take y'all seriously?
>If you could change one thing about this board, what would it be?
Removing said content bans would be nice.

>satisfied with work ethic

>art goals
Just to find some recognition for my art for now
>Start drawing
Everyone starts at childhood right? But I started to take it seriously in middle school when a history teacher encouraged me to pursue it.
>Profession
I did right in that moment but i've only drummed up a handfull of commission sales..
>ic play a role
The only thing /ic/ ever did that helped me was telling a younger me to stop drawing anime.
>Frustration
Every artist experiences this especially at lower levels.
>Change one thing
Stop being so lazy...I'm just tired 100% of the time and i'm not sure why. Even changing my diet and exercising hasn't been enough yet.

>best/worst about ic
Best: Most people won't bullshit you and tell you your turd is worth polishing. Sometimes starting over is best
Worst: A lot of people here can't draw themselves and while that doesn't mean you can't give critique (I mean i know when a movie is bad and whywithout knowing how to direct one) a lot of the critique that comes out of /ic/ as a result is usually dripping with a lot of hatred. A lot of people here have lost their actual drive so I think people lash out at anyone who has the energy to keep going, even if they're a lower level than them, or even hopeless at improving. I know I get a little jealous when I see someone excited to keep improving because I lose my energy so quickly and can't seem to power through when i'm home.

>What's your age/ gender/ occupation?
23/guess/student
>What other (art related) sites beside /ic/ do you frequent? Do you have a blog?
Made a Tumblr just under a year ago. Haven't put much effort in the social networking aspect, I just post things to feel like I exist.
>Do you have a drawing routine or schedule?
Nope
>How much time do you spend drawing?
Typically ever day, for typically several hours total. Time spent isn't always productive, either.
>Are you satisfied with your work ethic?
Fuck no. I keep dropping out of college courses because I'm so tired and depressed.
>Who's your biggest influence/ favorite artist?
Recently I've had Genndy Tartakovsky on my mind. Went back and watched a bunch of Dexter's Lab, and I've realized how much it's impacted my life. It was like I suddenly remembered all my dreams and nightmares from my childhood.
>What are your (art related) goals?
Make something worth seeing and having it be seen. I can't expect to be rich or famous, but I'd be glad to play my part and connect with just a handful of people.
>When did you start drawing? Why did you start?
Drew since birth, but only really started "trying" just under 5 years ago.
>Did you decide to make it your profession? If so, when?
Still not sure how to approach it, but I know I want to work creatively. Whether it be writing, illustration, graphic design I'm not sure. It'll depend on the people I meet.
>Did /ic/ play a role in your decision?
Everything plays a part. /ic/, however, did not have a particularly big one.
>Do you find yourself getting frustrated about your art lately?
More frustrated about everything else in my life. I have confidence in my artistic voice, but the meat-skeleton that it's currently stuck in is having some issues.
>If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
I'm too comfortable. I want to move out, but my family is a black hole of defeatism. I need to start working with my peers and get on a forward-moving track.

>What's your age/gender/occupation?
19/F/Psychology Student

>What other (art related) sites beside /ic/ do you frequent? Do you have a blog?
I'm a lurker, and I don't upload my art anywhere, not even /ic/. I like looking at different skill levels, so I also lurk a lot of art sites - dA, Tumblr, Pixiv, Artstation, and ConceptArt, just to name a few.

>Do you have a drawing routine or schedule?
Nope. I draw when I feel like it.

>How much time do you spend drawing?
Wildly varies. Some weeks, I'll spend more than half of the week drawing, while other weeks, I won't even touch a pencil. My average is probably two hours a day.

>Are you satisfied with your work ethic?
Yes. I don't make a lot of progress, but I feel happy when I complete a drawing.

>Who's your biggest influence/favorite artist?
Naoto Ohshima. Most of his art isn't exactly "good", but there's an aesthetic to it I can't get enough of. I wish more of his art was available online.

>What are your (art related) goals?
Understand art enough to thoroughly appreciate it and be able to help others.

>When did you start drawing? Why did you start?
I first started calling myself an artist (and sharing my art online) at 13, but I've been drawing for as long as I can remember. I eventually quit after years of frustration because I realized I'd been creating for validation and praise. I got back into it at 17 because I'd emotionally matured to the point where I could enjoy watching myself improve.

>Did you decide to make it your profession? If so, when?
I'm 100% certain I'm not going to be doing creative work as a profession. (Maybe 99.9%? You can never be sure)

>Did /ic/ play a role in your decision?
No, but it sure did help confirm it.

>Do you find yourself getting frustrated about your art lately?
Nah, I'm happy with my progress.

>If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
My boyfriend has been depressed for months now and I wish I could help him.
>>

>cont'd

>What's the best thing about /ic/?
That's easy. I love reading all the anecdotes from artists about their art, the art community, and their lives. I love being able to peer into the lives of creatives and see all the ways people handle being one.

>What's the worst thing about /ic/?
The people who infect this place with negativity, whether they waste their time making artist hate threads or give people brutal, but ultimately vague and unhelpful critiques.

>If you could change one thing about this board, what would it be?
Moderation. The rules are never enforced and the board suffers because of it.

Looks like fucking trash is what it looks like. Time spent doesn't actually mean anything, because what someone can achieve within a certain allotment of time is going to be different from person to person. I'm just the type that puts in a massive amount of effort, it doesn't mean I'm going to produce anything worth looking at. It just means I'm trying really hard. And trying really hard doesn't mean anything in terms of results. There are people who make "quick coffee break sketches" that look better than something I spent all week painting.

In fact, some would say you achieve more, and even learn more by going in small bursts at a time, than wearing yourself out on something all day, since bursts give your mind time to refresh and tackle problems better. There are more factors that should be addressed if you want to make a real logical conclusion about time and effort and what is most efficient.

>Biggest influence/ favorite artist?
Not sure, really. I look around at a lot of stuff and try to take things from everyone I see that's better than me (which is a lot of people)
>(Art related) goals?
I want to be good enough to draw/illustrate the things that I write about (I'm mainly a writer, writing is what got me into art in the first place). My optimal end-game would be writing for games / game design and working on art/novels on the side, I think.
>When start drawing? Why?
Oops, kinda covered this above. I didn't want to rely on someone else to draw characters I write about whenever I might want that to be done, so I decided to start learning myself. Plus, I've been interested in drawing for a long time but used to be under the delusion that it was some magical talent people were born with and you couldn't learn it. I've been drawing 'seriously' for about a year, maybe a bit less. 8 months? 6ish?
>Make it your profession? If so, when?
Not sure. I know I want to do something with writing, but I'm also open to concept art or illustration if I get good enough. So, not yet?
>Did /ic/ play a role in ^?
A little. There are some good resources around here, I've found good (and bad) advice all around.
>Frustrated about art?
Lately, yeah. Since I haven't had much time to practice, I'm not improving as much as I have previously, so it sucks to look at.

Tumblr, that's where my blog is at.

6-8 hours a day collectively. No days off.

Absolutely. I make sure everyone who commissions me is satisfied.

I was heavily influenced by my family. Everyone drew, so I started as young as I can remember. Didn't get serious until I was 15 ish though. Only improved in the past 3 years.

the amount of idiots who take advice from random online celebrity professionals instead of actually looking into it as a career.

you're not gonna wake up at 25 and become the tiger woods of concept art. but steady work may bring you to be a coach for a college team or a personal trainer.

if you consider art a career contact any artist on linkedin, look into what positions are interesting and figure out what you actually can learn how to do. talk to real people and don't listen to people who make money out of their online fame

Not really. Some days, I just don't feel it. I've been doing art for almost 50 years, I can take a break and not worry. I learned long ago to not force it, unless I have to, like to pay the bills.
>How much time do you spend drawing?

I hit a lot of my goals already, and even made a few dreams come true. Now, I work for me - no plans to publish or go into a gallery. Maybe down the road. Right now, I'm just enjoying the whole thing, for me.
>When did you start drawing? Why did you start?
I've drawn my whole life. Mom was an artist and encouraged us. She saved some of my drawings from when I was really little, and they're surprisingly good! I've always drawn and painted and done art stuff. It's who I am. It's what I'm drawn to, pun intended. It's a part of me, and the times in life when I couldn't do it, I went a little nuts.

They look for the same things any art director looks for - the ability to take someone's concept, and make it come alive. A string background and foundation in color, composition, and perspective, texture, and lighting. Able to fit into an existing style. (That's a lot harder than most people think)

The key word is "concept". Conceptual artists translate words to images. They can dive into a theme or idea or style and pull ideas out of it.

That you can paint and draw is a given for a job like that. You need to show them you can think.

although it sucks when you're waiting on feedback, I like how slow it is. if it was any more active I'd feel inclined to be here all day instead of working on my art. as others have mentioned we should strive for quality, not quantity in posts. more genuine criticism less pointless shitposting.

Not a problem. I see the shitposters here, I try to bludgeon them away.

This is why I say go to school for art. The classroom environment is also about sharing ideas, helping, and critiquing. The creative atmosphere is addicting, too, when you're surrounded by people as obsessed as you are - you get a "They're like me!" moment when you first step into it.

The problem about /beg/ is, that the feedback and critique in this thread also comes from beginners. I'd advise to look for a mentor or some form of (online) schooling that provides critique on assignments.

It's not that /beg/ is bad and I think it has its place on this board, but besides motivational purpose I don't think its very useful. An updated sticky with accessible learning resources beside the standard book links, such as youtube courses and practice websites or something like Aguri's One Year Guide that actually recommends good books to learn from would be much more useful.
>>
>>2953923
Stop doing 12 hours a day then, you know you're doing it wrong. The best way to work for the average person is to work for 60-90 minutes with intense focus, taking a fairly long break (40-60 mins), then doing it again for another 60-90 minutes, repeat until you're too tired (I don't do anything that requires focus after 12 hours, my brain is too tired at that point). Get 8 hours of sleep daily.

You coudn't be more vague, could you?

Personally I really like Rembrandt, he's a true master of his craft. Beautiful compositions and probably the most excellent use of light I can think of. There are some lesser known realist painters I like, but none of them are my biggest influence.
Other d/ic/ks seem to appreciate classical artists as well, it's just that the interests of /ic/ seem to lie in design and illustration rather than finearts.

I bet people on modern art schools are way more influenced by european artist. Although I think they prefer impressionism over realism.

>Shill me on fine art.
I think this warrants its own thread, but here's one lesser known artist for you; Carl Bantzer.

General advise if you're interested in fine arts: Go see a local gallery, you may discover some hidden gems on your own.
Or seek out museums where you know art you like is displayed. If you can do neither of those try to find a good photocopy of the artworks, as most pictures on the internet really don't do them justice.
I've seem Rembrandt's "The Man with the Golden Helmet" first in an artbook and then a gallery in Berlin. It's amazing how it seems to shine like a ray of gold. It's so good, hnng.

My main influences are still chinks :^)

Here's the drawing I talked about. It's still impressive but seems really dull compared to the real thing. Wouldn't fall in love with Rembrandt over this.

I also like his Night Watch wallpainting and that one painting with the Holy Family I sadly forgot the title of. His self portraits are also very entertaining.

yes, It's pretty free form now though because I can't commit to time frames, only work loads. If that makes sense
I try to constantly be doodling, or working on something bigger. daily its at least an upward of 3 or 4 because if I do less I get cranky
nope, I know I can work harder and longer. I just am building up to a better form. I also need better discipline in my day-to-day routines (I like hot showers and air drying while watching youtube videos)
There are a lot of them, and I am constantly trying to find new artists to study, but probably

to make a living in some way doing what I like to do. I really like creature design so that's a thing I could build to
I started maybe a year and a half ago. After making some wrong choices with my schooling, feeling worthless and being on the edge of an heroing, It was brought to my attention that my art wasn't too bad (well, for someone who hadn't studied art I guess) and also doodling was one of the only things that brought me any happiness. So I thought, hey, why not?
no but I'd like to. It's just about getting to a level of confidence where your worst work is good enough for your client to still enjoy
not really, but It did play a role in giving me resources for improvement
Constantly. I am constantly frustrated with my shortcomings. It's my default state
my drive, or my build type. I wish I was a shorter, skinnier manlet because having big legs makes it awkward to sit at my desk for any length of time
Best is its brutal honesty. Worst is the crybabies who lash out at people when they receive a crit

>What's your age/ gender/ occupation?
24/M/Student
>What other (art related) sites beside /ic/ do you frequent? Do you have a blog?
Just some reddit subs mostly.
>Do you have a drawing routine or schedule?
Not really. Whenever the urge strikes me
>How much time do you spend drawing?
Varies, usually depending on how much coursework I've got to deal with. Could quite happily spend all day on it.
>Are you satisfied with your work ethic?
Could probably do more, but I'm just a hobbyist so I'm satisfied with slow to moderate progress.
>Who's your biggest influence/ favorite artist?
Don't really have one.
>What are your (art related) goals?
Git gud I guess, but I don't really have any goals for art financially or anything like that.
>When did you start drawing? Why did you start?
When I was 20. I started because all I did was consume. TV, food, movies, reading, video games. I wanted to do something that created.
>Did you decide to make it your profession? If so, when? - No.
>Did /ic/ play a role in your decision? - No.
>Do you find yourself getting frustrated about your art lately?
Kind of. Like I mean, if its taking me a long time to improve on a particular thing, frustration is a natural part of that process for most people.
>If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
Start sooner. Its made me appreciate things outside of art - I live in Glasgow and before I got into art stuff I just agreed with the consensus that it was a shitty city full of junkies. The junkie part may well have some merit to it, but its a damn fine city in terms of architecture and general aesthetics. Walking through the city centre and then along the clydeside on a summers day is wonderful.

Art has been a double edged sword for me. When I'm functional, it's an absolute blast. Often though, my stuff is terrible, and it makes me angry. Taken on the whole though, it's been a positive.

Balancing art and everything else hasn't been hard. I live alone and don't have much of a life. I know others though that have had to give up art to tend to their families and jobs. I suppose I'm lucky that I resolved to skip out on that stuff back when I was a teen. It's been lonely, but better than the alternative.

Getting a vehicle is more dependent on your personal situation. If you live in a highly urbanized area, you likely don't need one. If you live in a rural area like me, it's a necessity. If you do need one, I'd suggest that you save your money up to buy a cheap used car outright. Letting you get away with only liability (assuming you're in the US) and skipping out on killer interest. Never go to a buy-here pay-here place.

Early retirement is in my plans, but that's only because I use about half the money I make annually. So yeah, it is possible, but everyone's situation is different.

Behance and pinterest for inspiration, I don't frequent this board much because it's primarily anime and video game digital art
I draw when I feel like it, having a routine isn't good for anything I do
I can spend a few hours doing it if I'm really inspired, beyond that I'm creatively drained
Yeah sure
Rhyls Lee right now
To sell a piece for over $1000 so I can continue setting that price on them
I started drawing as early as I can remember, just because I enjoy it
It's not my profession, I regularly move between jobs and doing gigs so I don't become stagnant
Hell no
No
I would change ever trying drugs or alcohol

Bonus:
Best thing? I will sometimes come across a very technically skilled artist on here. Worst thing? There is almost no creativity on this board. It's pretty much an anime circle jerk. (inb4 anime isn't creative, some of it is-- not this shit)

Around 700 USD a week, average. It really depends on the type of commission I get. (Full color, detailed looking background, how many characters) I also have an unlimited queue which helps a lot. Each one takes me about 2-5 days depending on complexity.
It definitely pays the bills, but it's not like I'm swimming in the dough. I have to make sure that once I get back down to 2-3 commissions in the queue, I need to start advertising again.

Unless you're planning on going to grad school, it's probably the most useless 4 year degree and lol salary.

STEM field is a safe bet for job/salary, obviously don't stop doing art on the side.
