Something's broken, what do I do?

>The original developer of the site has taken a leave for quite a while, originally due to medical reasons. Progress on the site is almost non-existant at this point. You can try contacting him at @LavaFlake or emailing him at [email protected].

What do we draw?

>Whatever you want. At this point there's no required topic so draw your heart out. Make sure you submit at least a half hour of work or you may get a low effort warning.

What's a low effort warning?

>The goal is to get people to draw every day by turning it into a competition. The low effort warning system is to prevent people from posting last minute, quick sketches when they're feeling lazy. If you receive a warning and it happens again within a month you'll be eliminated.

>This rule has been the cause of a lot of concern amongst newer artists so let me reiterate: this system is to police low effort content and has nothing to do with the quality of the work. New artists are more than welcome.

What happens if I'm eliminated?

>Your streak will go back to 0 and you will have to start again. No other penalties.

How can there be a new Last Artist Standing challenge every week?

>There is no week system anymore, instead new users are given "streaks" based on the number of consecutive days you can submit without getting eliminated. (token losses do not reset your streak)

Will I have an advantage if I join later in the week?

>The winner of a Last Artist Standing will be the artist with the longest streak. If you join on day 1 and last until day 85 then you'll have a streak of 85. If there's only one person left in the challenge when you're eliminated but they joined on Day 7 then they'll need to continue on for another week. If they're eliminated before then, you win.

True no need for a tier to indicate improvement. Regardless of tier or not, I feel Nyra, TekkyJSKURT and Tripfag have improved a little. The first two for getting a bit better at the forms of anatomy and trips recent works have shown, at least to me, more awareness of where he is placing his lines. Granted I haven't checked these guys out in particular awhile so I guess its expected that they would improve a little.

Yeah man I struggled with both of those problems too, comparing myself to others, and drawing straight lines.

Think about it like this, a lot of the people you are comparing yourself to have way more drawing and exp under their belt. Some of these people have years on you, and thats just how it is. Eventually you'll realize that everyone started out shit, no one is born a bernini or whoever you look up to. They had to put in some amount of years too. Just really sit and think about it, imagine if you stop drawing now, thats it, you just stop, and you wont get any better. Now imagine you stick with it and a year later you look back and see how much you improved, I guarantee you'll be practically cringing at the stuff you drew. But thats besides the point, you're now a years better at drawing. Imagine if you had stopped and then one year later, you decided to pick drawing back up, but had to start from square zero again. I don't know about you, but I would HEAVILY regret that I stopped drawing a year ago. It's one of those 'what if" things you'll ask yourself, like "What if I kept drawing everyday for this year. I wonder how much better I would be."

Take it from me, I was the perfect example of that, I stopped drawing in high school, went to art school, DIDNT intensely draw the entirety of it till my last year(which was last year when LAS started) and I'm playing major catch up. I asked myself that 'what if' many many a times my man. But I realized, that yeah, I'd probably be much better if I wasn't a lazy sack of shit and drew throughout high school and college despite me boasting about how it was a 'passion' and that I wouldnt be able to live doing anything else. But thats all in the past my friend, cause Im doin it now, you're doin it now.

So instead of looking back and wondering how good you could have been if you started earlier, look forward to how much better you'll be than you are now, a year or two later. Like your name too man.

I'm probably falling for bait but I'm salty, so I don't care.

I didn't want to take photographs of the pieces because that would be really rude, so I'll describe them more. Objectively, they were inferior to other pieces in the same category.

Neither of them were technically or conceptually 'good'. The comic-strip like ones looked like they were done with Illustrator's auto-trace tool, and the humor was third grade level puns ('assault' -> 'a salt'). There's great comic-strip artists who do lovely stylization and great, economic line work, but these had none of that.

The other one looked like someone's first graphic design assignment where they traced over a 1pp drawing and filled in areas haphazardly with textures and colors and no detail. It looked amateurish and wasn't interesting at all--like something from a middle school graphic design class.

I'm only mad because of how nice every other traditional art's honorees were. We get through all these nicely done or conceptual pieces, and then as we hit digital media, it's like the jurors lost their wits and decided "hm, this obviously looks like it was done on the computer" and picked these three. Sucks for the other students, especially the one who was serving something like this (but more illustrative):

Today I've been working on a colorist job I got for a webcomic! I hope to get some figure studies in afterwards, I really need to improve my anatomy and understanding of 3D forms.

BANDIT - Smokin' hot bodies, but I think some of those waists are a bit narrow, and legs a bit small.

NEMORI - Are these from life or reference? You did well to keep proportions in the harder perspectives, but the feet are sometimes flatter or smaller.

HEADAKE - Riding Hood? I like the face and the character in it, but the head seems large and a bit far from the body. Moving the shoulders a bit could also fix that.

LOUSE - Your bodies are looking gud, put them in as many different perspectives and angles as you can though, go all KJG.

SEFFY - Don't be ¡-¡. The male faces are looking good. I suggest studying the pelvis a bit, atm you're going from torso to leg too quickly. There needs to be somewhere to put the pantsu and bulges!

OWEL - The dangling sandal is very nice, the angle for that leg is a little improbable though.

SAUCY - Nice lighting and values! Some sharp bright highlights sparingly might add an extra finish, and wouldn't take long to do.

IDEON - Welcome to LAS! Don't feel fed up already, there's so much fun drawing in your future. And the only secret to making it is to not stop!

JEREMIAS - Your perspective and furniture are rock solid by now, good job. But be sure to APPLY this knowledge. Maybe draw a person picking a book off a shelf? Or people sitting round a table?

GONDORA - Those figures have decent proportions, but we both know you could have filled that whole second page with boxes. Push that extra 10% each day and the gains will stack up.

TEKKY - Your anatomy has improved for sure, but faces not as much, and your figures are oddly balanced sometimes. Keep going!

MAIQTHELIAR - Is the guy at the desk you? I have that unhealthy posture too. We gotta sit up straight when working.

MOIREM - Those fabric/clothes drawings are fantastic! Watch the far side of faces when you draw them in 3/4 though.

JERRY - The forward skull is good, the side view one less so. Remember to measure the relations of things constantly.

AESTRO - That's the least comfy battlestation I have ever seen. At least you have impressive high ceilings though.

BLARGHU - Great textures on the helmet and chainmail! Your value range is quite narrow though I think, some darker darks could help make things pop and lead the eye better.

thanks for the advice! from photo reference, so it felt easier to get a sense of form when there was more perspective/foreshortening involved. I definitely neglect feet ha ha but I'll pay more attention next time

Some simple gestures and scribbles look like they were done in seconds but in reality they take minutes or even hours (in my case at least, because I do the same pose a few times till I feel like I got something right, and then erase the rest).

JBrennan- Is this a watercolor portrait? You some very nice loose marks. I think you try going lighter with your brushstrokes on the hair next time. Also, I feel the nose a smidge too high (but I'm bad at facial anatomy so take that with a grain of salt :( )

Merumera- I like the crosshatching, as well as your dedication to being a Karamatsu girl. I think next time around you could try making your lineart cleaner as well as paying more attention to the forms of objects when you do crosshatching.

6eer6dw6- Pretty nice study so far! Don't be afraid to push those values and contrasts, those shadows around the bottom of the photo are very dark, much darker than in your study.

This is the tier list anon, or at least the one who made the tier list before it got revised. I don't plan on making a tier list for this month but instead the month of May since the time span for improvement seems too narrow. I will be making it in the last week of May most likely. After that tier list is made im not going to make any others since the goal I had for it wasn't achieved. My aim was for it to be a way for other /las/ users to get more familiarized with the new people joining in as well to be used as a tool for improvement by looking at those in the same tier or one tier higher for immediate skills that could be worked on. This instead devolved into shitposting and bad feels. I won't be posting in between now and the end of May to avoid misinformation and shitposting potential. I expect near the end of May there is the possibility of troll lists being made but it doesn't seem like much can be done about that except to ignore them. I plan to work with someone else when creating the next tier list so it can be more accurate. The last two things are if people could discuss those who they felt improved near the end of May it would help me out greatly but if that doesn't end up happening ill manage. Lastly I wanted to say thank you to whoever ended up revising my list because they improved the quality of it quite significantly. Cheers Lassies.

Literally my first time posting crits my dude. I don't know any of these lassies or have favourites, I just looked through all the submissions and when I saw something helpful I can point out then I did.
I noted down which lassies I critted and was planning on doing different ones each day until everyone has had one, and then recycling it round and round so everyone gets an even response.

Can you guys share any good ref sites? I only know about pixellovely and quickposes but I've been using those for so long and I've drawn every single pose so many times that I can't do it anymore. Is there anything similar with maybe a greater library of poses or a different selection?

Oh and is there anything similar for other things? Like if I wanna draw cars or planes or other mechanical things? Or drapery, animals, etc. It's pretty annoying looking for refs all the time instead of just drawing.

Bandit- Adorable kitties! Very charming so far, though I think the right cat's face is a bit out of perspective if it's supposed to be looking straight up. Perhaps try shifting some of the features rightwards?

Mistwalker- Very cozy color scheme, though I feel you could make the colors of the skirt and bike more different. Right now they're kind of blending into each other. Also, don't be afraid to go dark with your shading!

Looki- Cute portrait! I like the style and the hatching, keep it up!

Hman- You've got some really nice clothing folds and forms going on, though I feel the colors are a bit too... luminescent? The swimsuit's shading makes it look like it's made of shiny metal, maybe add some more fabric textures so it doesn't look so smooth?

Nelli- The face is looking alright so far, but the hands/forearms seem huge! Each one of those hands is the size of his face, remember double check your proportions. Additionally, since you're doing this digitally, there's no shame in using transform/resize tools to make quick proportion fixes like this.

FinlayHeathi- Interesting shading but the anatomy is very odd. In the middle picture the woman's neck starts too far back on the head and her right upper arm is very short. Are you doing these from imagination?
