Post your art gains, d/ic/ks. I have some images I've saved to start off the thread.

Unfuck yourself. Your last picture is utter garbage compared to previous ones. What the fuck are even those legs, you could draw then properly before.

Seriously, it looks like start of some sort of depression/giving up on art altogether.

I'll repeat myself: unfuck yourself before it is too late.

I'm sorry you feel that way. They're definitely the weakest part of the picture but I think most stuff on the right side of the picture is just not well refined. Those portions were going to be covered by buttons for an arcade stick so they didn't get as much time spent on them. Unfortunately, the majority of my output is commissions and I always have to draw the line somewhere for the time I put in versus the money I'm making, that particular piece is just one example-- next time I'll be faster and better, I hope.

After, I finish my last couple of commissions I think I'll take a long break to work on my personal stuff.

Just two pics, but like a before and after. I've been learning a lot but the learning process is slow. Too slow. I feel like I'm slowly plateauing. Quite terrified of that. I also still have to improve a lot design wise.

Classic before's style looks preferable to todays.

I do think you have improved a lot! Kudos. But painting elicits such strong expectation from the viewer. I think you have plenty of room for improvement.

Figured I'd participate since I was feeling a little demotivated. I've never made one of these before, but it was nice to see where I was before, and where I am now, still nowhere near close to where I wanna be, but at least I can say progress has been made.

Lets hope 2017 is a very productive year in terms of growth, I can at least do this full time now, so surely I'll see some strides if I really hunker down.

>>2948460
DEFINITELY

Finding /ic/ is what motivated me to start learning the fundies and buy a Bamboo to get my feet wet.

Then I found Sycra and FZD and found out you could make a career out of this, and that the starving artist myth my dad fed me as a kid was... well, a myth. So I figured since I was already spending a lot of time studying this for a hobby, I dropped out of Uni, and took art school instead, made it my goal to make it.

My only regret is not starting sooner. If I could go back to being 14, I'd tell my younger self that it was possible to make it as an artist, to stop copying shounenshit, to read GOOD manga, and to learn the fundies instead of playing Pokemon. Also to lift weights sooner, get jacked, and to fuck a lot of bitches. Lol. I'd be godly by now if I'd started as a teen.

>Also you should draw buildings more, they are amazing.
Yeah, I gotta work on urban environments a lot more. Working on this manga has really pointed out a lot of my weaknesses as an artist. I've certainly gotta work a lot more on urban environments. Landscapes and such are not so bad with me, but I do feel working on buildings and more man-made objects will help push my perspective even more. My backgrounds in the manga are lacking detail. I also feel my anatomy needs a lot more work. I often struggle with very simple poses actually. I do well with dynamism, but mundane stuff really comes out wonky sometimes. So I'm developing a study regiment to handle that.

>>2948463
I got another I still haven't finished, as the Trump comic took priority. I hope to get it done before Summer, as it's easily gonna be the best of the them all thus far.

I need to find a way to coordinate my studies, with commissions, with the comic, if the Patreon starts picking up that'll make life a lot easier. But I should at least be thankful I can more or less sustain myself without needing to work a full time job, many aren't that fortunate.

Sorry everybody for the long post. I'm just frustated for having no (you)s on my progress.

>>2942925
Ok, you have improved, but just stop doing face-studies or whatever they are. Are you trying to impress normies with them as an artwork? Then at least do something original rather than copying a photo.
If you rather want to do entertainment concept art stuff, work more on imagination and study other things with some purpose.
Don't you get overconfident because you have improved kind of fast
>>2943715
Terrible subject matter, but extraordinary progress.
>>2943787

>>2947585

>>2947871
What happened at early 2017?? I guess you're trying to be more painterly, right? Then keep working at it, you already dominate the anime/cartoony color style
>>2948174
Nothing to say. As an anon said, I guess you worked a lot since 2015, which is great
>>2948236
You have gained some reputation here at /ic/ for your age and I think it injured your art. I'd sugest you to leave this place for a while and work on your fundamentals on your own
>>2948860
Work on your design(2010 is the best in that way) and less in your style please.
And why are the last images at 30% opasity?

You definitely improved and it's not terrible, but it's not good (nor erotic) either.

The rendering itself is fine, but you don't know how lighting works so it just ends up being pillow-shaded than anything. I'd say stop painting for a few months and work on your drawing skills, as that's the weakest part right now.

probably because he somehow reached the conclusion that it's related to depression and giving up art

that really only seems like a conclusion someone would make if they themselves were going through it (i.e. projection)

Yep, it was a request from... /v/ I think. They said, "I want someone to draw Ankha from Animal Crossing in the Lab Zero style."

I've still got a long way to go and five to six months is maybe too short of a time frame to measure progress, but what do you guys think? I need to practice more often. I draw one to two hours every other day, and I gotta step that shit up.

Will she make an expression anytime soon?
>>
>>2955861
She doesn't have the ability to make any other facial expressions, only exception is looking angrier.
>>
>>2955765
I can't read your drawing very well since they're so compressed (or are they really that scratchy IRL?), but you need to pay a lot closer attention to landmarks of the face so it's easier to draw realistic proportions from imagination. You have a natural eye for copying from reference, but that's not translating well to your other drawings.

Also, draw bigger.
>>
>>2955722
If you goal is to get better i'd try and avoid drawing faces from the front for a very long time. Same for perfect side profiles. Yours aren't bad at all but its just that when you do that it tends to encourage flatness, you just put the features on a face flat like mr potatoehead, when you draw from other angles your forced to think through it and to imagine how those features change in 3d space, its much better for quickly improving in face drawings. Again, there's nothing front with drawing faces from the front, but its not very conductive to learning.

I've seen you a lot on LAS and I love your work. That being said tho, I feel like you're not challenging yourself. Everything from the second half of 2016 up till now isn't bad but it's kinda basic. Those scenes you did in 2015 are really cool and highlight some of your weaknesses like posing, composition and environments. I think you'd improve more if you tried to do more ambitious stuff. Also that cat pic from Feb is my favorite thing by you, I really dig it.

Anyways, just my 2 cents. Hope I don't sound rude.

I'm kind of scared, usually I see most pictures of progress that span 5 years or more and there's not much progress. Is this normal?

>>
>>2957984
looks like that anon has some sort of autism, it looks like you didn't draw all that much until like 2015-2016 where you really started improving considerably to me

i especially like the dog lineart in 2015 and the fish in 2016
>>

who are you/ where can i find more of this art?
>>

Does it mean I have got worse? And how could you like 2012?
>>
>>2958421

Other anon here, you haven't got worse, lines and everything is better now, buuuut... what is fine in 2012 is that's a simple, funny idea that is quite charming. In 2015 stylization on Wolverine also has this charm and looks pretty fresh and alt.

2017 Viking kinda sucks and that's why it destroys the impression.

Your most recent one is much cleaner, but it looks like all you've done is sketches. Try pushing yourself and applying color and trying to finish up a piece.

>>2956197
I love the direction your going in, nice to see experimentation that you've done over the years.

>>2959702
that's awesome that you've taken up drawfagging. one thing I'd say is maybe try to be cleaner with the lines for characters and background and be more consistent/confident with your hatching.

>>2943155
Nice progress, I really like your goblin gunslinger, do you have a blog?
>>
>>2961284
>cleaner with the lines for characters and background
that's hard to do with a mouse and a progressively unresponsive drawing tool
>>
>>2961814
that's true, the only way I could think of to get clean lines with a mouse is vectors, or the pen tool, but that will give you a different look that you might not want. it's cool that you are drawing anyways despite your technological limitations

what the fuck man
>>
>>2951274
your coloring / rendering or whatnot is really good but you just can't into fluid poses
your style is very VERY static

You need to liven it up some more and then apply your rendering skills afterwards, you'll make some good stuff yet

You fell for the artschool meme.
There are many like you. It's fine. Keep in mind you're there to make connections and get your foot at the door. Ask your teachers as much as you need, don't hesitate.

I took a short class a few years ago and had an amazing teacher, didn't use the time there to ask as much as possible to imopove myself (some of the teachers weren't that great but that one was). Don't be me. Work hard and ask questions.

This is really nice, anon. Your style has become very elegant over the years. You've retained what made your original style special (great sense of movement, fashionable proportions) and over the years, you've improved a great deal.

I think there's a bit of a wonkiness issue going on in the legs of the 2017 drawing, but it's not that noticeable. Just something to keep in mind for next time.

Thanks, I haven't been doing much at all lately, especially with digital. Just sketches and some studies. I've improved in draftsmanship since then, but not much else.
I'm a junior in high school (no ban pls) so I have a lot of excuses not to paint anything, but lots of opportunities to get some quick sketching in.

Pic is just some watercolor sketch I did from memory.

I'm deflecting a bit here, but every drawing in my improvement chart is either lightly referenced from several images, or completely from imagination.

>>
>>2969088
High competition
High stress
Low pay
Low respect for the job/from the client, the only respect found is from other artists.

To clarify: I only called quits for being a full-time pro artist (for now), I didn't want to get stuck without a bachelor nor without a decent income.
Luckily mathematics/robotics/programming is something I take great joy in as well
The best would be if I could combine both sides in my life, perhaps continuering and expanding my freelancing so I get about 2 days worth of work a week and then finish it up with a 3 day stable job designing & building robots.

I didnt notice the years and went top left -> top right -> bottom left -> bottom right and thought there was improvement. After seeing the years, it seems as though you're sticking too much to one style of drawing and keeping it there. Try advancing the drawings past where you're leaving them, try adding color and textures.

I'm impressed with the major improvement, they look a lot like birds and you have your own style to drawing them. Colored pencils looks great, and I think digital drawing would suit you well.

>>2974184
In my experience even abstract expressionist professors were still classically trained at some point in their time as students. I wouldn't be surprised if both these professors are excellent at figure drawing & painting.

Your competition at school should never be your peers, it should be professional artists.
>>
>>2974193
Portfolio review is the barrier of entry to the real art classes. Drawing 2 is still basic stuff and figuring out composition problems. Drawing 3 and 4 have two classes each and are designed to refine strengths and work out weaknesses.

To me, art isn't really a competition (unless you're graphic design, kek). The goal is to make appealing, well-crafted art that has depth and meaning. I doubt many people in 2D illustration are in it with the assumption they're getting a guaranteed career out of it if they beat out everyone else.
