A piece from my junior year in high school. Did it for the senior-level art class when the teacher told me he needed to see my work to accept me into it.

Good. I've been painting and drawing my whole life, was raised by an artist mother who encouraged us to always be doing art. Once I hit high school, I got into the advanced class, where we worked on our own. It was pretty cool. We could do pretty much anything we wanted, as long as we brought in the materials. I wanted to do oil, because I had a full set thanks to my mom, but the school said no, water based only.

I always loved the week portfolios would be on the wall, and the try hard's stuff was up. This one girl, who thought she was the most talented artist ever, who'd sneer at the stuff we were working on, put up sheets of papers with (not kidding) clowns and balloons and kittens on them. Needless to say, she didn't get a scholarship, or even into any art programs.

I guess I was/am pretty meh. I started taking art more seriously when I was 15, and I think I've managed to improve a lot from those years til now. I'm about to graduate in a month and I just hope I'll be able to improve as much though college as I did in these last couple years.

I never drew in high school. I only started getting interested in art 2-3 months ago. I kind of regret that, because now I struggle between my job and the little time I have to practice; when you're a teenager you have all the time in the world once school is over, unfortunately I played vidya instead.

I had a pretty generic art style when I was 15. I had many problems with sparkles and had no understanding of anatomy due to animus. Now that I'm a senior I can look back and be proud I have dipped my toes into more realistic art styles and have vastly improved because of it. I'm depressed though because I draw far less then I did back then. When I was 17 I didn't even draw one drawing for 9 months. Was making this kinda shit.. 3d abstract, explody fun, mixed media graphic design photoshop etc. This was about 2006, I was 16 years old, world was my oyster.

DeviantArt liked it and I made it to depthcore which was the most exciting thing ever for me at the time.

I dont claim to be proud of my work from that time. But I will say it was incredibly fun and I felt like the world loved me which was nice.

I sunk many hours into environment design, completely ignoring people in what I created. I drew from life, but very rarely, and usually only when I was in a foul or anxious mood.

When I came to /ic/ it was good, because before that I had no grasp of how to find information that would lead me towards mastery, and I never received any comments that condemned my work. I was so glad that people on this website were honest about their instinctive feelings towards my work.

I started again from scratch; my environment studies are becoming more visually exciting, and I'm developing my understanding of the human form. I don't feel as pained to approach paper and create something as I used to. From here I've gathered several more empirical influences, made an Instagram and filled 2 sketchbooks with daily drawings

I got really good at drawing grotesque and autistic cartoons because when I was in high school channels like OneyNG and Psychicpebbles were popular and still uploaded so that kind of gave me a love for pure retardation and I would just slam out like 15 of them on a piece of paper in under 20 minutes.
I also got super into Tolkien around that time so the first time I got super into drawing realistically and from imagination was shit out of LOTR, I moved into more pen and ink type stuff.


I've since moved on to music as my primary passion, but the one thing that can make it difficult is that it requires total concentration and all other background things need to be away, which makes it more difficult to do for hours and hours and hours consecutively unless its a brand new project. As for drawing I love nothing more than to do it while chilling out and watching a movie or something, if there's background noise I'm still content to do it for hours on days off.

Eh I was pretty awful.

Now that I think about it, I don't remember when I started liking the idea of drawing for a living. I wonder if its a PSYOPS thing

You have a lot of potential for highschool, if you keep this up you'll be able to get in a studio or do freelance fantasy illustration in no time.

Your major problem is that your values are WAYYY too contrasty. an overwhelming amount of black to light with no mid tones. paint some mid tones in that sucker!! there's also some anatomy issues, but I'd need to see some reference in order to fix it.
