there's no "bitching/blog/feels" thread up and I don't want to shit up the board with one so I'll just bump this one.

who /knows the problem but can't fix it/ here? when I try to draw more and I suck at it, my brain goes "this is hard, this doesn't come easy to me, it looks like garbage, and that means I'M garbage." and my self-esteem is so low it can't take it so I go months without drawing again when I could just practice and get better. Logically I understand it but I have a hard time forcing myself to JUST DO IT.

Like, duh, just get more self-esteem/be better/be stoic but fuck it's easier said than done, I can't change overnight.

I feel the same. Here are my 2 cents on it.
If a chef cooks food, he can eat it. If a carpenter builds a house, he can live on it. If you fix a car, you can drive around.

But in art once you finish a painting, it's dead.

Maybe other people can enjoy it, but you personally get nothing out of it after it's over. Even if you get paid, there is no satisfaction. No joy. No transcendence. Drawing is a painful and difficult process and the end product is not very useful. No wonder why we procrastinate. I mean, the developer of Tetris became addicted to playing his own game. Why can't art be like that? I want to feel like Zeuxis, without the death part.

So instead of improving my skills I have been focusing on changing this. First up I change the environment to make painting as enjoyable as possible. Stoicism is banned here. I should be able to at least enjoy the process. This is my life, I shouldn't waste it feeling miserable. Nobody wins from this. Brushes, lighting, furniture, software, technique. Even if it takes me longer to finish something. Everything changes according to my own enjoyment.
We change our drawing process for productivity, clarity and speed. But how would that look like if you aimed for maximum pleasure?

Secondly, I force myself to consume my own art. Not criticizing it. Not looking for mistakes. Just staring. This is pretty fucking hard. I just want to advert my eyes away. I had to buy one of those anti-anxiety fidget toys to keep me focused. My artist brain keeps looking for anatomy or perspective flaws.
After some time of doing this I have stopped trashing my art. It's never as bad as I think it is. It's never as good as I think it is. This gave more taste for composition and graphic design. You can put all the fun and energy in there.
