My take on german expressionism for class... Any critiques? Also general expressionism thread.

looks more of a fauvist revision, you are respecting too much the figure. However the mirror is great
Seems that your principal referents are from the Blue Rider...

Its the second time I hear its more fauvist. I suppose I havent been able enough to let go of harmony and composition and figure. Perhaps psychologically I will tend towards joy and playfulness, since it is a portrait of gf...

can you describe what expressionism is for me briefly?
>>2930808
What exactly are you trying to express?

although i rather like the piece, particularly the colors used on the girls skin, i think it rather misses the point if it's supposed to have anything to do with german expressionists. the fauvist thing is also bullshit.
again, lovely painting, don't get me wrong. just a very shallow understanding of the movement.

Other anon here, but go wikipedia, like seriously. You won't get better feel what expressionism is than if you look at the work of different artists that began the movement - and it's still hard to define term because different expressionist work borrow from different styles.
What I can tell one for sure - OP give me fauvism vibes and not really expressionist even though fauvism is kiiiiiinda a type of expressionism. It lacks though a dramaturgic and intellectual dimension that expressionism has, also I'd say expressionist pieces are usually a lot more dynamic, inspired by futurism.
What OP painted is usual nude, but in modern/more casual setting, a bit more abstracted and with vivid colors. I see that he wanted to smuggle something more with the reflection in the mirror, but honestly it falls short. I think he aimed at the feeling of dread? but it reads just as the "fauvismed" photo from cellphone camera of a boyfriend stealing shot of his half-nude and sleeping/afterfucked gf.
There's no substance here. Which is fine for fauvism, but not for expressionism, especially german one.
Honestly for me it's unsalvagable and while fun piece, it's not good for the topic of a class. Better paint another painting, this time thinking about emotion and topic more heavily.
