Set up an elaborate composition of fruit and dead animal skulls or just take a good look at your coffee mug. Paint/draw and post itt.

i just finished this... not exactly elaborate though

You're actually alright when you paint what is in front of you instead of "muh style" or knockoff Van Gogh/Matisse/Flavor of the Month. Some of the edges in there are a bit too razor sharp for no reason in my opinion, but otherwise it's pretty decent. Or instead of softening those edges maybe you need to sharpen some of the cast shadows. There just needs to be a greater consistency to how you choose to treat edges.
>>2926973
damn brian, i finally thought we got rid of you and yet you still have to shit up the board. fuck off and go sell your crappy paintings to your mom.
>>2926973
It's a nice still life...like others you did. Seriously, I know that artists usually grind same things over and over again till nausea, but even if you are hell-bent on still-lives, do something else than apples and a big ceramic jar.
Seriously. Why not put some book there? Flowers? Even a lamp or something like that. Just something else than the fucking apples.
>>2926854
Did this in 2 mins from imagination no bully.

Do a world a favor and drink a bottle of bleach. People like you should be too stupid to breathe.
i dont do many still lifes
heres one in charcoal from 2 months back
>>2927369
Well, it's a good effort. I think you'd benefit with doing more of those, values could really be improved over time.
>>2927377
ye, i know. it was first charcoal after like 2y break from this medium
i dont rly enjoy still life, i preffer drawing a model
thanks for your input
>>2927369
Yeah, the values aren't pleasant desu. But still lifes are the best way to improve your values, so you're on the right track.
Something that will help you improve more from piece to piece is to take some extra time to analyze your scene. Squint your eyes, break down the values into darks, mids and lights. Try to get the main values accurate so it reads overall. Once you get that down, you can start adding subtler and subtler value shifts, moreso in the mid tones and the lights. Try not to focus on details as much in the shadows, but also try to avoid having large areas of a subject as one value, it tends to flatten the image. Sometimes it's acceptable as a style choice, but style comes after fundamentals.
Also, you might benefit from drawing shapes from construction. That bottle looks really mushy. You could also do a graphite underdrawing, and fill in the lines with values with charcoal.
Hope this is helpful!

Tbh* not desu. Lolwtf
Quick still lifes of a tomato and a banana. Like 20 minuts each
>>2927415
wow anon you did these in 20 mins each!? !!!!!
>>2927417
Is this irony? Look at them, they are very rough and unpolished. Maybe the thumbnail looks cool, but it's just some big brushstrokes of the general color, not any detail
Started this yesterday, will post final even if it goes shit

"Tbh" automatically changes to desu on 4chan. Desu is the Japanese verb "to be."

Well, I guess a drawing of inanimate objects from imagination is technically still a still life, I could've specified more clearly that drawing from life is desired.

>>2927369
try to plan your shadows and value distribution. it's really all over the place, which makes it look muddy.
>>2926854
first time doing this, i couldn't finish it
bright light when painting can actually be an advantage when you tend to paint too low in contrast. since it's harder to see subtle value shifts on the screen, you'll make sure to push it.
>>2927369
Try to be a bit cleaner with your tones. decide what is in light or shadow and keep it consistent. if it's lit by an ambient source, keep the local tones flatter and carefully put in some softer shadows in areas that are occluded.
>>2927415
Not bad but they seem rushed. Even if there's only 20 minutes then you shouldn't be slapping shit down, put some thought into it and just try to be more efficient and get the crucial information instead of chasing detail and finish in a small time window. Also I would not do them on a white bg, even if you put white paper under them it won't be 100% white.
>>2927438
Nice start. Maybe try thinking of forms mroe instead of copying flat shapes. Like on the leaves it looks like you copied their outlines and thne copied flat shapes of value onto them, instead of understanding the form of the leaf in 3d space and how the values correspond to the forms.
>>2927647
Good attempt for a first time! Honestly I would just try to continue or do another one and bring it to a finish instead of giving up early. You are getting discouraged for no reason.
>>2927706
Materials are not reading as well as the could, and the transparent stokes are giving it an unfinished look. Try focusing more on making every mark count so it is precise and displays the information you want.

This anon againg
I spent 50 minuts with this one. But now, isn't /ic/ in favor of quantity over quality?
Anyway, the glass came out pretty bland in this one.
P.s: Thanks>>2927990 for the crits, now the background is in color
fug, talk about painting too low in contrast...

Did a little more just now. The cheeky cunt popped another flower while I was gone, lol.
Erased the leaves and tried to focus on their shape more. Got a lot better, but the charcoal background messed up the outlines in a couple of places. Charcoal is giving me a lot of pain, btw. How do you get sharp edges with it? I had to us a pen to get the edges.
I was getting demotivated at the end, until I gave the left flower a go and it got a lot better.

It went to shit.
Lessons learned
Flowers change fast.
Stick to the same light conditions.
Get the construction right as early as possible.
Charcoal sucks at edges and is a nightmare to keep clean.
Don't use pen to outline.
I waited too long and the flowers were very different from when I started. Tried to make it work but it didn't.
>>2930179
I'm sorry anon but you were destined to fail, charcol for tight detailed work is pretty high-tier, and mixing it with anything except either chalk or the absolute faintest of pencil sketches will stop it adhering.
Adding a black background before you've finished all of the details is a terrible idea (save it until the end) and the bizarre shape that you were working on the background in will have only led to patchy coverage anyway (focus less on making each tiny patch really dark asap, try to work quickly on a wide area as a whole and build it up).
What are you focusing on? If you want to be improving your speed/perspective/construction you should be working in a less fussy way (broad confident strokes, quality over quality, don't do anything for longer than a couple of hours).
If you want to be focusing on your rendering, stick to pencils or paint for now.
Well done on picking up some lessons yourself, now get on to the next one.
>>2930369
Thanks for the great feedback!
All of your tips are noted.
>What are you focusing on?
I feel like my strong side is rendering. Also my approach is usually one of refining a crappy sketch until it gets better and better, so the focus is on taking time and not giving up, more than having everything look right from the start. My weak side is construction and "quality over quantity" as you mentioned. The goal is painting, but I have seen some incredible stuff made with charcoal so I want to learn that as well.
Did this a few months ago, where I used the same approach as the flowers. The charcoal is just for the background, I use a mechanical pencil for the subject. I'll start the next one and post itt
>>2930898
Neat. Do you have someplace I can see more of your work?

very cool, is that oil or what?
