How good is Oda?
now is he?
>>2926883
What do you consider noteworthy?
>>2926883
More people have read One Piece than have seen the garbage that lines most modern art galleries. Perhaps he's found a way to connect with people that crosses cultures. Perhaps that's the real test of successful art.
>>2925554
Good at what?
He's very good at his job and his art is designed for a purpose of conveying the story in an appealing way while still keeping a stable production. He doesn't waste time on things he feel are unnecessary. It's probably a big factor in how he managed to keep it up over all these years.
>>2926883
Hey, eat a dick. His writing in the character backgrounds is really really strong and tragic, it's the main stories where he falls off
>>2926883
>very little artistic value
I feel that he draws not for the sake of drawing, but purely for getting his life work (One Piece) conveyed through this visual medium. He cares more about the existence and progression of his story more than the "artistic value" of his art itself. If anything, the only thing his art serves as (specifically his style) is as an iconic visual landmark for his series and his series alone.
Toriyama is superior.
>>2926883
I'm sure you can write and draw a better series.
post work senpai
>>2929797
Not at all, toriyama is a lazy shit who cannot take criticism
>>2930939
>toriyama is a lazy shit who cannot take criticism
sauce? Toriyama is breddy fucking amazing man. He's even inspired /ic/'s hero, Kim Jung Gi.
>>2929797
hell no
>>2933861
The art isnt very good senpai
going full fanboy denial wont change it
>>2933869
I think it is pretty great mate
>>2926883
You are right, but weebs are dumb fucks and they probably didn't read a single real book in their lives.
One Piece is mediocre shoneshit, hell the fucking main character is a lazy Goku rip off, the plot is just a dumb sequence of fights and powerlevels, the message is the same "strenght of friendship and justice" bullshit for little kids.
>>2933879
>"strenght of friendship and justice"
but the biggest symbol of justice in one piece world enforces slavery and pirate alliances in the black market
>>2929797
This. His background in advertising gives him a better understanding of composition and panel pacing and placement.

This is downright atrocious.

>That's pretty much the best you can find in Dragon Ball
Not really. Just the first example I thought of.
>lots of speedlines
It's an action scene... duh.
>poor choregraphy
lol
>Not saying it's worse than One Piece but it's clearly not better.
It's leagues better. The figures are more consistent and solidly drawn from all angles. the inking is cleaner and more confident and the coloring, even with the limited palette, is way more effective.
And this is just in sequentials, pages that were drawn in 1-2 hours. When he could stretch out on a single piece he showed just how fine of a draughtsman he really was.
Oda a shit who tries way too hard to be LOLWHACKYANDWHIMSICAL with his style. The characters turn out to be completely grotesque-looking since he ALWAYS uses the same fucking giant mouth expressions and the "attractive" female characters all have the same generic titcow bodies and faces. 2/10, into the trash.
>>2933879
Oh yes, Luffy, the person who kills both good guys and bad guys for the sake of his friends and a pursuit of his goals is the same as goku who fights for the sake of fighting
Do you remember the time that Luffy actually burned the flag that stood justice?
Oh no you don't?
What about that time he let out a bunch of murderers and criminals out of prison?
What a fucking hero huh
Yep
Do you have a blog where I can read the rest of your insightful opinons?
>>2935764
I don't know anything about one peice but if it's for comedy than I guess it works
Jesus christ this isn't /a/ fuck off with your weeb shit. Ngmi.
>>2935787
It isn't always which makes it worse. There are also better cartooning styles than always using the same LE GOOFY SHARP TEETH AND GIANT MOUTH XD expressions over and over again. Oda is a fucking hack.
>>2935782
The manga has been going for nearly 20 years at this point. I stopped reading it after the Water 7 arc way back when I was in high school. You can't assume that people here are big enough fanboys like you to care about every fucking event that happens with a manga series that's been dragging on for that long.
>>2935791
>Implying based Toriyama isn't relevant
>>2935800
>i don't read the manga
>I'm going to spout my opinon on the manga
Do you see the disconnect here?
>>2935791
Fuck off no one gives a shit about your pottery bead crafts
>>2935782
Yeah they are the rebel kids fighting le evil establishment. They fight the big baddies and help the weak opressed people. Nothing fucking original here, it's flashy action shit for dumb teenagers.
Grow up you fucking manchildren, read actual pieces of literature instead of 90 volumes of the same crap.
Also the fact that you can't even notice that Rufy is a blatant Goku rip off makes you even dumber
>>2935833
They don't help the weak most of the time. Sometimes they even steal from them but they get away with it because they helped them out even though most of the time it's for their own selfish reasons.
>>2935842
how dare you speak to me
>>2935833
THEY HELPED TO FREE CRIMINALS
POISON MAN WAS NOT BAD IN ANY WAY
THEY LET CEASER LIVE AFTER HE COMMITTED GENOCIDE
Also what makes you think I don't read other things, stop projecting you nigger
You make no arguments for any side and just compare and contrast with zero thought behind it
Maybe you should be the one reading books my man
It would teach you some critical thinking
>>2935833
It's actually a lot more complex if you take the time to read it. Only issues are from the format of the demands of the magazine. Some real good story telling techniques in here but like everything else nothing is perfect.
>>2935833
The shonen genre is very much aware of it's cliches. One punch Man was made for people like you that can't look past these. You either grow and evolve the medium or you sit there and complain about it's shortcomings.
>>2935845
>reading books
>suggesting this on a board that's filled to the brim with manchildren who are perfectly content with reading shonenshit that's been running for nearly two decades and who have the attention span of a goldfish due to being raised on video games, cartoons and japanese comics
>>2935858
Wow look at you, got it all figured it out huh
Everybodys so fucking stupid except for you
Everybodys a fucking sheep and you're the only conscious person on the planet
I bet you sit at starbucks with your book trying to show it off to everyone that you're reading a """"hard""" book
Why are you so fucking gay anon?
>>2935866
Man, if you're going to suggest people to read fucking books on a board that has people who take their main inspiration from anime and airbrushed porn bullshit, you're the fucking gay one, anon.
>>2935880
And if you're going to spout lies while having an air of undeserved superiority then you're probably on the right board and i should fuck off
Oda could never draw a fact that communicated emotion like this.
1. Oda's not amazing but he's far from shit. His stuffs decent esp. considering the fact that he has to pump out a new chapter every week.
2. To the anon who mentioned miura. Of course Miura's stuff looks way better. He's definitely a much better artist than Oda but you also have to consider that Miura spends like 5 years on every page. More time = higher quality
3. Toriyama is definitely better than Oda and he's actually a pretty amazing artist. Idk why people think it's cool to shit on him or his art, maybe cause dbz is so popular and people wanna seem above it all.
4. My main gripe with Oda isn't his drawing ability but his compositions. There's been so many times where he just clutters a page to the point of incoherency or where I have to stare at a page for 5 minutes just to understand what's going on. He could benefit from simplifying and streamlining his stuff.
>>2933875
That's not even his drawing. They just pulled off some fag's coloring and relining of the image. If anything Ida's not half bad for how worked to the bone most mangakas are...Especially with his deadlines.
>>2930939
>who cannot take criticism
source? Because the dude is easygoing as all hell. Especially now that he's in his 60s
>>2935639
>>lazy
>>even though he'd regularly draw a 15 page chapter in a single day
>>even though he never once missed a deadline for illness in ten years
I think people just take small things he says from interviews, like how SSJ hair is blond because it was easier to deal with color wise, and assume that he's always been lazy. When artists having small shortcuts and such isn't that uncommon.
Especially when you have to pump out more than ten pages of something weekly
>>2936311
I think the thing is Toriyama has always described himself as lazy, but his perception of lazy is vastly different from that of a normal person.
One example of his "laziness" is he'd spend all week procrastinating on a chapter by playing video games and assembling model kits, and then at the last minute rush the chapter out inside of 24 hours. To him he's lazy for procrastinating so long, while sane people look at his ability to crank out quality work as an indication of his Godhood.
There's a reason he's more or less deified by manga artists.
>>2935920
Lmao are you serious
Thats "nothin personell kid" tier
>>2935978
>There's been so many times where he just clutters a page to the point of incoherency or where I have to stare at a page for 5 minutes just to understand what's going on
literally the reason why I stopped reading OP. Well that and the fact that it started dragging 10 years ago
