I've been looking for "drawing lessons" or searching "how to draw" etc. What I find is "How to draw face" or "how to draw a banana" or "how to do this - do that" etc etc.

I want to start learning the right way so my technique doesn't develop fucked up and doesn't get in my way later on. (Like playing guitar for example. Making an effort doing up and down picking so when you are playing the kickass guitar solo's it doesn't get in your way later on.)

What is the right way to learn this? I've just been using my common sense, I may be wrong aswell. Should I just try to draw anything-everything? Is this how I get better? or is there a smarter approach to this? I'm not looking for a magic pill. I know I need to practise A Lot. I'm just trying to work smart.

Thanks senpai.

Not that guy. I simply wanted to have a quick drawing session because I didn't draw anything for the past three days. Though to try out something completely different from what I've done before, just for the heck of it. That is:
1) Painting with a watercolor brush on a single layer;
2) Painting a bird;
3) 10 min time limit on the picture, including the reference inspection.

Tell me how shitty it is before I try something like that again.

Some improvement there, most noticeable with their faces, but you still have to work a lot on the craniums. I again remind you that eyes are located about right in the middle of the head vertically. Most of those heads don't have a forehead that's tall enough, and that's pretty much the only reason they still resemble aliens. The smallest look the worst, and the best faces are... oh, screw it, I may just show them directly instead of thinking up ways to point them out with text. The "b" stands for "better than others", or "about normal", since I didn't want to give you the wrong idea with something like OK. B+ is a perfect Japanese male with hair dyed blonde. If he's bald, too bad then, an alien he is. Oh, but maybe there's something wrong with his ears... are they aligned properly on your picture? I can't see them clearly. Other heads are either done poorly or I can't tell anything about them since the scale is too small.

Your nature sketches don't impress me as much as before, most likely due to me getting too used to them. They're on the same level as before. Why don't you try being more and more complex with them?

dude your pic is literally better than anything i've ever shat out. I probably shouldn't even be giving advice lol.

here's some shit pointers anyhow:
>his left arm looks a lil fucked
>looks pretty good
>if its supposed to be a chick (judging by the tits) that head is way too masculine
>torso is way too short
>lower legs are like, rotating? don't do that. they look a lil bent
>that back bend he's doin looks very spine breaking
>his right hand - the fingers between the pinky and thumb look good, but the pinky just looks like a thumb on the other side of his hand and vice versa - it looks like he has two thumbs almost

that's my awful advice, you asked fo it
>>
>>2920892
I guess there's some validity in your shitty advice, thanks anon. Yeah it's supposed to be a chick... I drew Sailor Moon all my life, and suddenly dropped drawing chicks in favor of bulky muscly dudes, and all of a sudden I can't draw woman anymore, it's ridiculous.

here's some food for thought (hope i'm using that expression correctly) at least

jawline is key. if the jawline is too pronounced, it'll look really masculine. also, another really helpful piece of advice an artist friend gave me: there are no real naturally occuring straight lines on the body - especially with women. that doesn't mean you need to have uber exaggerated convex and concave lines on everything, just deter from lazily drawing in straight lines to connect point a to point B, because that'll look janky.

also another thing I learned about female anatomy. men are typically really "box-y" (queen), women do have curves, especially in that area of the torso and the hips. the pic related isn't exactly the tutorial I learned this from (can't find it atm), but notice that "two triangles" thing with the body. if you're doing a pose like that, just bend (well, fold more I think) the triangle.

As of late, I can't get to draw digitally. But I can pick up the pencil when I'm idle at work, or during lunch. Any tips for when you just can't get into digital?
Maybe not the best place, but I own a bamboo tablet, and a friend lended me her cintiq. Cintiq feels like shit, been trying to get used to it for a few months but it's just so alient that it gets on my way. Are Intuos tablets worth buying, in my case? The pen tilt looks amaizimg desu.

If I were you I'd go back to whatever your book of choice is and keep working on proportions. The head, arms/forearms and torso on both the guys doesn't really go together that well. Also see what you can do to make the face more part of the skull than just "drawn on", especially the one on the right I get that feeling

>>
>>2920960
Dwarven or not, the parts don't quite fit together the way you mixed them. Study drawings of dorfs and try to understand how they're proportioned so they don't look off to the viewer
>>
>>2920963
Thanks for the input. I'll see what I can come up with
>>
>>2920931
Did you study an particular artist yet or used any kind of anatomy book? You have a general idea where which part of the body belongs, that's a good start, but you don't seem to be drawing with forms in mind, rather you just draw the lines you mind creates. This leads to everything looking rather 2 dimensional. I'd suggest looking up "forms". Besides that I think you suffer from the symbolism syndrome - you already draw in a style without drawing the real deal first.

Generally ppl recommend first learning how to draw actual people and then venture on into manga/comic/whatever style.

And don't be so lazy with the hands. Give us some crisp drawn hands!

On a site note, maybe draw with a thinner pen, or don't push so hard, or draw bigger, everything feel rather claustrophobic and it's hard to really see any details.

>>
>>2920976
Thanks for the input. I've been drawing, and trying to follow loomis, but the books and Loomis' drawings themselves feel...off. A little uncanny, at least on the book I started a while back (Figure drawing for all it's worth), so I know in theory about the stuff. Are any other authors out there I can look up? Most recommend Loomis, and that kind of...eh, feels weird.
I studied with the Stan Prokopenko videos as well, and I really like how he explains anatomy, although I haven't practised as much as I should.
And on drawing bigger or with a smaller pen, it just feels wrong. I guess I just have to get used to it, though.

I don't think you should care so much about the rules for now. In fact, downscaling your images so much only hides the truth, which hinders your growth. Resizing them to 2000xsomethingsomething would be still fine, I guess.

Upon a closer look, the face isn't as good as it looks when it's small.
The eyes are slightly uneven, but what kills them is the huge difference in their shape. Purple lines equal the width of one eye. They have even width indeed, but they have too much space between them and their positions relative to the middle vertical line differ too greatly to be written off under the pretext of a slight horizontal angle. The shape of the nose is a bit strange, but it could work if you move the nose to the right (of the picture). Right now, the nose suggests that his head is turned slightly to the left side of the picture, while the eye direction suggests that he looks straight at the viewer, and everything else shows that his head is turned to the right of the picture. The green line is the perfect middle line if he's facing the viewer directly. Be very careful about hairstyles too. More often than not hair follows the outlines of the skull, so the top of it is, naturally, shows where the top of the skull is horizontally. When a viewer sees such a hairdo, he'll likely sense that something's off. Finally, the wavy line indicates where the bottom of his ears should be in this angle.
>>
>>2920992
Personall I liked Michael Hamptons's book Figure Drawing Design and Invention - it's not that often mentioned, but it helped me to get a good overview. It's not a bible, but helps with the fundamentals, and from there the youtube videos by Houston or Vilppu are generally good.

And yeah, though it might feel wonky at first, use a smaller pen size.
>>
>>2921011
Thank you, it looks way more appealing than Loomis so far. Will give it a good read!
>>
>>2921040
Honestly I had huge problems with Loomis as well, he isn't teaching "the real deal" there's already his style mixed in. I think Hampton has a more "raw" attempt.

Look up some articles and whatnot on tanks and how they work. Understanding what all those doodads actually are to some degree is very helpful for having things make more sense when you draw them, and will help you if you want to make up your own from imagination later on. Also as the other anon that replied to you said, keep the forms in mind and everything's a bit easier.

Cold Fusion is a regular at /co/, he's most active in the general for making webcomics.

I wouldn't say he's straight up awful, there's just something "off" about his art. I actually don't get it, like I look at the anatomy objectively and half the time it actually looks informed, but I still won't like it.

Maybe it's his color pallete, or the fact he doesn't actually use values

In "drawing with the right side of the brain" there's an exercise to draw a picasso painting upside down - to show what your eyes sees instead of what it thinks it sees. To fight symbolism and all. Though it's more of a demonstration thing, on how our brain has trouble to simply draw what we see and instead always likes to simplify everything.

>Am I supposed to master this before moving on

You definitely need to git gud at positioning and rotating boxes in space to draw well. It is normal for this to be hard. I know it seems like something so basic should be easy, but it's not, so don't think you're broken if it takes you a while to master it.

The good news is, skill with boxes is super useful and you can never be good enough, so studying won't be wasted. A few days is nothing compared to the value you get. Just study boxes from life or load up a cube in Blender or whatever, figure out what the vanishing points do and draw a bunch of different boxes a ton, trust me, it'll help.

Spent time identifying the underlying forms (cylinders, spheres, boxes)
This is what I think you should be practicing at this stage.
>>2921052
All complex forms are made of simple forms, find the simplest, add the second simplest to the first, etc.

>>2921116
You honestly just need mileage. Get used to what it feels like drawing. Try to draw something you like (it will come out terribly) draw it again, and again.
Good work with the cylinder, you understand the basic idea, now try drawing a bunch of cubes. Stack the cubes on top of each other, draw them at different angles.
>>2921119
All stylization comes from simplification and exaggeration of realistic features.
At first, build characters out of simple shapes, learn what looks good, roughly how shape balance works.
There is no substitute for classical realism, as it provides a base for arguably everything you'll need, including cartoons.
>>2921134
Looking decent for a "first timer"
You need to focus on your spacial relationships, look at the reference.
Measure the distance between landmarks such as the pupils, the bridge of the nose, the ears and make sure that they are accurate to the source material. Make sure you are drawing what is there, not what your mind tells you is there (difficult at first, easy later). I recommend drawing faces upside-down, this will force you to look at the lines themselves instead of the assumptions your brain makes about the features

>>2921151
Finish it, no matter how upsetting it seems. I think it could use more dynamicism, push the blacks a bit more.
>>2921185
A good step in the right direction with your finished product however. Try overlaying your sketch over the reference with a low opacity and see where you went wrong with the contour. Make sure not to correct your drawing until you remove it from the reference or else you wont be learning much.
>>2921232
Ambitious, which is good! Focus on developing more confident lines, anatomy. Try crazy perspective
>>
>>2921615
>>2921610
I was speaking roughly, i probably shouldve been more clear.
I meant that if there is a gross difference in length with minimal perspective variation then the issue should be readily apparent.
Sorry for the confusion

Looks a bit better now. Still isn't perfect, though, and you lost something appealing in the expression. The best way to fix your mistakes is not to move parts of the faulty image in Photoshop, but to redraw the same thing multiple times until you reach the best result. When you try to master art, the quantity approach ultimately beats the quality approach.

>>2921890

>>
>>2921887
From looking at the sketch in question, I can see that, 1: The pose is stiff and robotic. An interesting gesture that conveys energy and balance and feels organic is arguably the most important aspect of figure drawing sketches.

2: The structure ain't there. It looks like you're drawing what you think a body looks like, rather than drawing what you see. It causes the piece to look flat, or like a stamp. There's no foreshortening in the pose, and it looks like there should be. One knee is bent, yet the pelvis is almost perfectly vertical. That makes no sense.

3: Not that it would have saved the piece, but you didn't shade the figure to indicate the forms.

4: It's pretty evident you don't have a very extensive knowledge of anatomy. The arms are about as long as the legs, while the torso+head looks to be shorter than the legs. The proportions are all kinds of fucked up. The tits are the least of your worries.

Never think anything you've drawn is perfect. Because nothing you draw ever will be, no matter how good you get. Perfection is an abstract term. The best mindset you can have if you want to improve faster is to accept that there's always something more you could've done, and always more to learn. If you think for a moment that you've done the best that can be done, you'll stagnate.

Doing the Keys to Drawing by Dobson I realized that glass bottles are the fucking endboss of drawing shapes.

Seriously wtf, this is like the 5th exercise and if I REALLY did it properly I would take at least a few hours to draw a bottle with every reflection/shading.

"Allow at least twenty minutes for the drawing" kek fuck off Dobson.

No seriously, this guy opened my eyes to how complex such simple things can be. Are there objects that are more complex to draw then glass bottles that are exposed to many light sources? Does anyone have tips on how to draw things like that fast? Like I said - it would take me forever to draw it properly.

oh okay. I don't know most internet artists. I am just drawing for myself really. (except maybe Shad or Sakimichan but who doesn't know them?)
Just looked at his work and it is okay. Just generic comic art.

Start studying anatomy. The proportions of everything look off and it has the feeling of something that was copied in an attempt to match the reference. Try to construct a rough sketch first next time to make sure the proportions and gesture look OK. Your linework and value isn't terrible

I wasn't very productive today; there's only one drawing I did from life and the lack of sharpened edges makes it appear irepresentational; it was meant to be a tree. I'm starting to move into values from life before I move on to value in imaginative drawing, for obvious reasons. I mainly focsed on plotting one large shape as the local value and returning extra shadow-play for any enrichment shape that looked like it was darker, perhaps to poor effect

The main effort of the day was heads in frontal view, which I still don't understand. I'm trying to get a feel for what looks anomalous and/or alien, and what looks human (if humans aren't aliens themselves). There's a bit of likeness experimentation I tried by changing the angle of some of the planes surrounding the eye; I'm afraid the acute attention to that area has made the eyes engulf the rest of the face

Before and after anyone?
>>
>>2922396
To be expected. Keep going. Also resize the image next time.

>>2922434
Just fucking look at studies and keep drawing. I use the sticky and random other stuff that gets me to either draw useful exercises, or just makes me feel like drawing whatever crap I find fun. As long as you're doing some kind of practice consistently, with a good mindset, you'll improve.
>>
>>2922434
It's usually said just to be a dick and not give constructive criticism. Like when they say "Blog?" they're just being an asshole. Like when they also try to deceive if you should do gesture drawings or not. It's hard to tell when these people are serious.
>>
>>2922434
Some of the resources in the sticky are useful but really most people are going to need constructive feedback from a fresh set of eyes to correct the mistakes they might be making when using those resources.
>>
>>2922448

>>
>>2922448
What about when a drawing is posted that there is literally nothing good to say except "read the sticky"? Check out the catalogue right now, there's a bunch of threads where some faggot posts awful toddler-tier art and expects responses like "your shading could use some work" or "I like your style, but maybe resize the nose". These people are so lacking in self-awareness they either have to be trolls, who therefore don't deserve a detailed response, or just so hopeless they need to start from scratch and read some fucking beginners book.

I'm a beginner myself, I don't have the experience but I've done my research since I've just started drawing and I wanted to know the right way of learning therefore I may be able to share with you.

2 things we should work on as beginners are getting rid of symbol drawing and gaining muscle memory. Symbol drawing is drawing what the thing is supposed to look like rather than how it actually looks like. A good way to get rid of it is to draw faces, bodies etc upside down and after getting done with the drawing, flipping the paper upside down. They say it fucks up with the brain and you focus on the lines easier because upside down face makes less sense than a normal looking face which makes us go "I can't draw, also this shit is not supposed to look like this" so what we draw is influenced by the mind.

I'm currently trying to draw perfect circles, sometimes drawing some lines and try to keep drawing consecutive lines parallel to each other. Just building muscle memory. Teaching my hand to execute the inputs given by my brain. Kinda feels like playing the guitar. When I first started playing, It was too much trouble just to put enough pressure on the frets by my fingers. Now its just natural. Hope same will happen with drawing too. I've been drawing circles for the last 2 days, they've already gotten alot better.

>>2921134 This is me by the way. I suck shit too.

Good luck.
>>
>>2922544

Download and read Ernest Norling's book on perspective in the artbook thread. Don't worry about adding detail like shadows and folds until you've improved your ability to draw basic 3d shapes in the correct perspective.

It's hard though and I'm still not there yet.

Show me, anon. I'm curious how you figured it out.

So far I've only managed to draw like 4 of the same box leading out from the middle box and then abruptly ending with a smaller square box like "yeah I did it!" but really I didn't.
>>
>>2922714
Ok so here's what I figured out with the diagonals, right? Something was bothering me about how the outside middle diagonals were drawn in like, almost two point perspective. The cubes all have a face normal to the center of the sphere and the example shows that each cube bisects 30 degrees of the sphere (eg 3 cubes is a 90 degree rotation). Anything in the hemisphere plane, which is the one with the four outside cube faces we see, should have a face directly pointing at the viewer in one point perspective. What I figured out is that he doesn't rotate the diagonals enough. The middle diagonals should be rotated 60 degrees around the diagonal axis, so the farthest diagonals should actually be showing their face on the bottom of the cube (the side facing inward towards the center of the circle from our perspective). If you just do all the rotations in 30 degree intervals it should come out with perfect perspective.

Holy fucking shit. I don't even want to count them. Unproductive, my ass.
Anyway, the minority of those looks okay and majority doesn't. Namely, where the eyes are too wide apart, or where they have different shape. Those two pairs of eyes and eyebrows in a slimy blob next to some boxes with exclamation points on them, they look alright, I'd say. A head to the right and below of them looks better than the ones surrounding it. The biggest heads ultimately suffer from the same problem of mislocated and different eyes (as well as the middle guy on the lowest right sheet, which is a shame). A wonky man in a profile view has an almost decent head, but work on your nose / brow ridge and cranium shapes a bit more. The guy right below the fish looks okay, I guess, but his ears could be bigger.

Overall, I'd say you now get how much of a forehead should be visible IF those heads are viewed from below. If they aren't, add more height.
>>
>>2922619
Add more lights and green shade, maybe. Give it a beastly look.
