this

you have one question to ask yourself and that is if you want to draw or not.

If no, then you will never learn ever for the rest of your life.

if yes, then that's your final answer. you have no choice but to learn now no matter what it takes.

It doesn't make any one better, but it's the truth of the situation.

but it's not, you characterized him by saying his potential is that artists rough sketches when even that artist has better artwork, some that's even pretty decent. how is that truthful? it's a big waste of time to be that much of a dick.
>>
>>2910976
A person can hide all their bad work, but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist. The truth is Firez can lean one way or the other and just because he has better artwork doesn't mean he always does. If everything is perfect, then that's just the truth.
>>
>>2910977
you sound like you know next to nothing about art. every art piece has the potential to turn out bad regardless of the artist or how much experience you have. there's also a clear difference in the amount of time and energy he put in the examples you posted and something like a piece he has hosted on deviant art, if it's even the same guy, like I said I just discovered this person. you really michalengelo never scribbled out some poor gesture work or anatomy sketch and had to toss it out? cmon pham.

>tfw you realize this and feel empowered to try

I wanted to learn to draw since I was 20 and then already I felt it was too late but I thought: "I will regret it if I don't start now". Now I am 25 and still haven't started and indeed regret it.

The problem is that whatever prevented me from starting to draw at 20 still prevents me now. I just lack that intrinsic motivation and patience.
>>
>>2912365
damn this looks gorgeous
>>
>>2913648

>I just lack that intrinsic motivation and patience.

The key is to start anyway no matter what. Once you get going, you stop caring about your feelings about procrastination and build up momentum like a snowball rolling down hill.
>>
>>2913656
The thing though is that drawing requires focus and thought. If your heart is not in it it's hard to practice deliberately. I just get all these negative thoughts about how I can't even manage to do a simple exercise right and how there is no way to get good anytime soon which all just makes me depressed.
>>
>>2913648
Man, what the hell. If you love drawing then you should go for it. You've got to be really, really hungry for it though. If you're afraid of making mistakes, just get all the mistakes out of the way so you can start making good works.
>>
>>2910351
Don't give up. It's never to late to start drawing. It's literally putting pencil to paper. Anyone can do it. So can you

>>
>>2913648
>I just lack that intrinsic motivation and patience.
im projecting here but it sounds like you just want to do something that you think is interesting rather than actually enjoying to draw. which theres nothing wrong with that, but theres a difference between drawing as a hobby and drawing as a passion
>>
I started at 27, im 29 now, im getting okay at art. I know a guy who started at 27 and was amazing by 30
>>
>>2914584
>enjoying to draw

How do you enjoy drawing if you are not able to produce anything decent? The road to getting just decent, learning the fundamentals, is already long enough. No idea how so many people manage to learn to draw. I find college mathematics easier and less tedious to be honest even though you would think something like drawing would be a lot more fun.
>>

Sounds to me like you've just got a garbage mindset, it's nothing to do with "intrinsic motivation and patience".

>>
>>2917202
Er yeah, if by 6 years time you haven't made any significant progress something is very, very wrong with the way you're learning.
>>
>>2917193
Don't not draw.
>>
>>2917700
Draw a box is shit because it's some bitch loser regurgitating Peter Han's course (barely).

The stickie(s) are shit because it's written by someone who can't draw himself and namefags around here.

Loomis is almost shit because it's outdated and the people who recommend him are parroting from the pros who made it back in the half quarter of the early 2000s when the only resources available were loomis.

You might have heard "look at the syllabus on X website like CGMA and follow that" but that, too, is shit advice because the people taking those courses already know how to draw to a degree and a lot of them have taken advance courses and are coming back to the starter courses to patch up the holes i.e perspective.

Your artfriend is right, just draw and have fun.
>>
>>2917709
But how could I even get good whenever, in the first place, I have no idea what I'm doing? Is it literally just boiling down to doing it?

>>
>>2914683
So if you copy Van Gogh and shoot yourself two times, your work will sell millions?
Great! Now I can call my grandparents and tell them to learn art while staying alive for 10 more years.
>>
As usual people in these threads keep focusing on whether or not someone can learn to draw if they start at 28. Of course they can learn, it make take a bit longer than it would for a 20 year old but it's absolutely doable. The question is; do you want to commit the next few years of your life to art just to become employable in your 30s? What if 5 years from now you realize that art isn't all that it was made out to be and you don't want to spend the rest of your life fulfilling someone else's artistic vision? Will you start over at 33?

Have you considered going into the trades instead and drawing in your spare time? Contrary to what people here say, you don't need to draw 12 hrs a day do be decent.
>>
>>2917805
>you don't need to draw 12 hrs a day do be decent
right, it's 6 hours minimum.
>>
>>2917812
No, make that 4.
I spend 2 hours a day figuring out where to place lines. After that, another 2 hours just to color.
>>
>>2910351
28 is basically 20. You can make mistakes till you're 30. Go on, draw.
>>
>>2917816
4 on weekdays 6 on weekends deal
>>
>>2917812
>>2917816
You can't time it. I've learned drawing by sketching in notebooks, book margins, any piece of paper I could find. Ten minutes here, ten minutes there. Hours on end, all day, every day, and sometimes none at all. It must be natural. If you force it, you'll never learn anything.

>>

You need to be mindful of what you think. It's reasonable to have a little doubt but if you keep thinking you can't do it, you're certainly not going to feel like you can in the first place. There's more I could say but just look up mindfleness.
>>
By all means keep going OP, but I have to say that every single time I read about some godly artist starting at 25+, it always goes like

- has been drawing since a toddler
- entire family of fine artists
- draws better than 60% of /ic/ by the age of 8
- took a degree in neurosurgery applied to rocket science
- married with 3 kids
... then at 25 he decided to start a career in art, so he was a late starter!

it's just much much harder. doing art requires a completely new and different kind of thinking.

Then consider the mental strength and drive of the average person.

In fact, complaining online about how it's "too late for me" is already a sign that the person doesn't have what it takes to git gud.
>>
>>2910354

neuroplasticity IS technically a thing, but most people conflate the factors of young learning vs. older learning like:

free time - younger people tend to have more of it

energy levels - younger people tend to have more of it

open mindedness - younger people tend to be more

willingness for pattern repetition - younger people tend to be less stubborn

and other stuff. Yeah, young people do overall learn things quicker, but as far as determining a vague thing like artistic potential it's basically worthless.
>>
>>2921739

The reason they don't post their work is that unlike you, they don't actually want to associate themselves with shit-flinging posts. If mandatory names were introduced I guarantee this place would get friendly in the snap of a finger, for better or worse.

God damn it every time I start to draw something free hand I just get pissed and wanna throw my fucking pencil

I can copy decently, but that doesn't mean fucking shit. I tried that thing with the funny faces in the /ic/ guide and it just frustrated me. I also can't get a clear picture of things in my head I want to draw like video game characters and shit

It's so god damn frustrating, I don't wanna give up but fucking christ it's hard to want to keep going

Can anyone address this? I'm hanging out in the thread hoping for someone to shed some light on the situation, because it's honestly a problem to me.
>>
>>2923027
I had this problem, apart from practice and studying these 2 things helped me a lot:

1) draw slower
2) flip the canvas / use a mirror if you draw traditionally

Nobody is stopping you. Get out of your own way.

just realize that you're a beginner and you're going to have to make a lot of shitty art before you make something decent

this is literally true for every hobby out there

stop getting pissed at yourself
