If you are a /beg/inner in art, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.

We should not have to make new threads or post in the drawthread with our fundamental exercises.
Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead (I recommend ShareX)

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

There's a new (and cleaner) sticky in town! You can see it at:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1uwaXKU7ev6Tw_or__o8ARpUb6r2rCZYJGqwSFV9AD98/edit#bookmark=id.15jx3pyuimvj

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

I've read sticky, it directs me to Loomis and Drawing from right-side, i have studied and chaotically applied these books last year and it was last year when i tried to get into drawing and dropped/failed.

I feel like i need some sort of more clear instructions, can you please tell what my daily drawing routine should be for first few thousand hours?

Im a beginner who aims to draw his own manga/comic stories.

Sorry, but I have no fucking clue what you're talking about. If you care about others understanding you, could you express yourself in English?
>>
>>2907389
I said the two unfinished heads are definately fucked, that's why I didn't ask for feed back on them (I also posted my loomis heads so some could tell me if those were drawn correctly). Concerning the bottom middle head, are you sure you're not confusing the hairline with the 'skullline'? This head has a hairstyle with volume. You redlined the hairline as if that's where the cranium would be. As for the bottom right head, I had figured that one had incorrect proportions in terms of the horizontal length from the face to the back of the cranium.

sorry i was busy and getting flustered with other stuff at the moment

Criticism please?

Only just learned how to use clipping layers to colour in photoshop (was using it backwards and wondering why it wasnt working) and that a 3000px+ resolution will work wonders for quality. (OBVIOUSLY!)

Have been searching everywhere for feedback, and don't know why people aren't replying! Please give me some criticism!

Used an Intuos4 Pro M and Photoshop CS6 on a Macbook Pro 2015
>>
so I'm a beginner and not good at this drawing stuff yet, but when I finish a project I wanted to do and I like the result (however imperfect) I just get this sense of elation that I don't get out of any other hobby ive ever tried. Is this what a hobby is supposed to feel like? I kind of love it, though I assume it will fade over time.
>>
whats the difference between photshop CS6 and photoshop CC?
also wheres a good place to get a free/cracked copy. the #1 torrent version of CS6 has the comment section filled with people saying the installation guide is full of wrong info.
>>
>>2907414
it won't fade over time, I promise! That feeling scales with the difficulty of a piece you decide to tackle, until you are in total bliss for an entire day staring at the masterpiece you just created. It's the only drug that gets more potent as you keep using it. Keep it up, and you'll feel it too!

I think the problem is that there is nothing really majorly wrong with your painting, but nothing amazing either. It's in that middle zone where people neither have obvious critiques or praise for it. This is good though, because it means you are getting out of the beginner territory and into intermediate, and you can start posting in the draw thread.

In terms of critiques I only have minor things that are subtle and hard to explain well. They're the type of thing that you will pick up with experience. I'll list them out:
1) Unclean shapes. You say you are using clipping masks but it really doesn't look like you are. A lot of your edges are slightly messy instead of crisp and clean, and a lot of your shapes are a bit wobbly instead of confident longer shapes. Look at the silhouette of her hair for example, it looks like it's really laboured when it's a very simple shape in reality. Imagine if a master painter or animator were to draw or paint it--they would have only a few long curve drawn in properly instead of making up a curve out of lots of little strokes.
2) Forms. Your forms are a bit flat now. Even if the reference is flat in terms of lighting there is still form information and you should be looking carefully for it and focusing on it. The metal interior on the right especially is very flat--don't forget that it is still a face so all those little shapes form an egg. If you take a soft brush on an Overlay or Soft Light layer and glaze over the whole head to bring in more form (putting a light value over areas to be brightened and a dark value over areas to be darkened) it will look a lot better.
3) Materials. Right now the materials are not reading as well as they could. The face on the left is meant to be a shiny porcelain type thing right? To get that glossy look you could use a soft brush to get the shadows softer and smoother, then you need crisp designed highlights on it. The one on the right needs to feel like metal.

Nah, I don't think you can find any human who's capable of coherent thinking with a skull like that. The red outline here is closer to normal outlines of the skull, but it's still not okay, and your hair goes below it, which is simply not possible. Human foreheads are much more vertical, and the another important thing to remember about drawing from this angle is that back of the skull goes behind the ear.

Take this model and inspect it thoroughly from various angles.

what they mean by the "install folder" is literally going through your hard drive and program files and find the Cs6 program you just installed. if i were you, when you install, choose EITHER 64 or 32 bit not both, it makes it easier to find the folder that youll be dropping the crack into

then when youre in the folder, you need. you drop the cracked file in there.

after you do that theres an update like cs6.1 or some shit that you need to install and that sort of 'cements' the crack you dropped in into the update.

Going through Keys to Drawing right now, working on midpoint

Why do I seem to never get correct proportions in figure drawings and portraits? I'm thinking maybe it's just an issue of me being to impatient, but am I really supposed to sit for like an hour measuring every single detail before starting to polishing some simple portrait? I've been practicing for at least half a year, but haven't really seen any improvement in this area, am I missing something crucial? I use the techniques taught in keys to drawing.

Edge control exercise

>>2907748
Loomis is good but poorly explained, lots of people do thier own version of such a method but the point that you should build the face out of fundamental shapes is solid and at the end of the day, where you learn to do that is unimportant,
>>
>>2907760
Your edges don't look that controlled really. Post the ref for specific feedback since you seem to be basing it off a weird planar torso.
>>
>>2907760

Loomis is only poorly explained when people don't bother to actually read everything he writes. He explains a lot about his methodologies.

Also you need to move on to his other books after "Fun with a pencil". Which is a lot looser.

Drawing is not an income producing activity. I have a job that allows me to have money to spend on my hobbies.

Regardless, I bought the markers on eBay for like $3 a marker, and my mom buys me my other art stuff because I think she secretly wants me to be an artist (and no - I don't live with my parents). I don't play video games, and I don't go out much. I live a relatively low consumption life...

Bro, how did you get through Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain? I didn't get too far in because there was over 75% philosophical and psychological science and barely any actual exercises. I tried it for maybe five days and got tired; I've been on a PDF version of Keys to Drawing by Bert Dodson, and it's had a lot more exercises for me to work on.

>>
>>2908304
Nah, to be fair to anon, you kind of need to be warned that Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain is mostly crap, and should only be used for the exercises. Most people go into books with the intent to read them thoroughly, that book is a case where that's not the best strategy.

Anon from >>2908303 here, just so you have some reference I guess

In order of drawing, Top left, top right, high middle right, stravinsky, fallout bobblehead, my timbs, bottom (today, not long ago I drew the weird plant thing I found outside.)

My worst offender is the "from memory" drawing that was the first assignment in Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain, I can't show that to my girlfriend at all; I would be offended lmao. One below it is the mirror image Betty wanted me to draw, followed by my hand. It was pretty soon after that that I checked out though.

I know they suck, but I want to get better. I've gone through five years in a high school that has me fix planes and engines, and the only time they had us do anything related to art were the blueprint-style drawings they had us create before making a part. As a result I can at least tell when proportions are off and I can tell what's shitty, so I keep a self-deprecating attitude that motivates me to improve. Only issue is my patience with Betty Edward's book :/

But yeah I find Keys to Drawing a lot more engaging for me, maybe because my high school environment was totally geared around direct attitudes and all instructors/students had literally no time for mixed signals and passive aggressiveness when there was a fuel leak in one of the tanks that had to be fixed lmao

So please criticize/roast me, but in a way that I can learn from it. Thank you for your time.

If your lines are clearer and flowing.
You'll have more definition.
If you have a couple of lines scratchy it means
you're not sure where the "correct" line is.
Figure out the right lines and it will give it definition.

don't shoot me for this but can you draw anime/stylized heads with the loomis head construction method? Whenever I see stylized head construction they typically start with an oval or a massive skull. I have no problems applying the loomis head method to photos of real people but it looks out of proportion if i try to apply it to stylized images.
>>
>>2908798
Loomis wants you to draw a globe but anime is really more of a shovel. The eyes and ears and nose lines still matter though. However Loomis is going to emphasize facial features that don't really get used in anime (cheek bones and such that are really only represented by lighting or profile in anime)

So kind of, but why shoe horn it when there's good anime references?

Not sure why, but I really feel like recommending this video to any fellow beginners. For some reason seeing how he starts out his figure drawing here really made the process clear to me. Before I start rendering this one, do you notice any serious errors in anatomy or foreshortening? I'm pretty sure the composition is fucked and needs to have some beach and/or sky added to it (maybe I should even move the horizon upwards). The upside-down girl's right foot most likely needs to have its angle fixed. Yuuka's shoulder needs moderate rework. Anything else?

>>2907857
>>2907859
Guess I'll have to let my wood be the judge then. As of now, I like the third version the most, but I'll wait and see how it looks when fully rendered. The middle one lacks the seductivity I cherish; it is more of a hungry, impatient look, typical of overly assertive American women (IDK though, maybe that's just movie and porn actresses acting out their part).

>>2909067
Always go the distance. Step by step you'll figure things out on your own which will help when you get to those topics or subjects that had you scratching your head. You'll have a higher chance of things that are already in your head clicking instead of trying to wrap your mind around a new idea. And in constructive drawing, everything ties back into assembling forms. Hands and feet and the face are just forms and surfaces, like the overall structure of the body. It's like a fractal: you zoom in and see the same thing you were looking at but repeated.

Tbh, he's right about "clearly inexperienced" and "getting people annoyed," but that doesn't stop my jimmies from getting kinda rustled when I don't even know the level of a guy criticizing me with such words or know it to be much lower. (I welcome constructive feedback without any regards to skill, obviously.) I'm sure anybody who's been in my shoes shares the sentiment, as proven by the last argument I had the displeasure of participating in.

>>2909062
You seem to be getting better each time. Remember that ears are placed much closer to the back of the head in a 3/4 view, so the top left head in the middle sheet is ruined. The lowest one has uneven eyes, it's like somebody flayed his skin and clumsily put it back again, like in Face/Off. The head on the rightmost sheet looks alien/degenerate because of the placement of its eyes and nose, but the one on the small cut below is actually decent.

This is irrelevant. It's like how someone can be hypocritical but still be right. The number one quality an artist needs is humility. If you can't accept you're not good and just shrug off criticism for being too harsh, you'll never find incentives to improve.

/ic/ anonymous criticism is brutal though, so just try to take it lighter and not literally. Make sure you're at least taking it at all and not deflecting it

It seems like when it comes to value, I should use the airbrush (and erase for hard edges), and when it comes to color I should blend with harder brushes, is this accurate?

>>
>>2909147

>>
>>2909131
ho boy (all directions are from the subject's perspective)
>neck is 2d
>left arm is emerging from the back and has no shoulder (this could be fixed easily by making the back line extend higher up)
>tiddies are too angular and nips should be pointing down at that size
>right tiddie attached incorrectly
>just fucking downsize the tiddies before you learn how they work
>hips attach too low, the JOINT is at the pelvis, but the muscles should extend higher up
>back of left thigh should curve directly into the back
>perspective on left thigh is fucked
>somehow positioned right thigh correctly regardless
>crotch is pointy? should be curved and smaller with part of the leg's connection visible
>thighs appear to terminate too early, even considering its cut off

Construct with FORMS in mind, not flat shapes. Think of how things fit together in a 3d space and envision contours.

I've long since accepted that I'm a beginner and far from drawing well overall. That I have stated many times up to now. (It doesn't stop me from liking my relatively better works and being proud of my progress, and it shouldn't stop anyone.) Even so, I was told that I improve surprisingly fast many times. And I notice that some of the things I draw look great enough to receive honest praise. I'm no Solomon and so can't afford to choose between several conflicting opinions of equal weight too, as in >>2907849. I do read any feedback and never shrug off a constructive comment pointing out my flaws, but it's impossible for me to seriously listen to something like "kys," "ur a fag," "everything's ruined" when the poster doesn't bother to explain his opinion at all. That's why I try to point out precise flaws and best points when it's my turn to give feedback to someone. After all, when you know first-hand how irritating it is, why would you be a faggot to others, who never offended you?

I shall add that harsh but solid and precise criticism always motivated me to overcome my flaws fast. In fact, I find it weird and disturbing lately, getting almost no negative comments at any place I go to, while also receiving less praise for my efforts. I'm starting to feel insecurity and doubt:
>> leaving you to ponder whether you are being ignored or actually gittin' guder

Did I really learn to fuck up a lot less? Is it that I just seek advice from other beginners who can see major fuck-ups but aren't keen enough to notice minor ones? Have I reached the point of stagnation and since there's no improvement, newest pictures don't impress as much in comparison to the ones before them. Or is it that I don't actually learn anything by observing? It's hard to tell, but it's even more hard to believe that the latter is true, given I'm getting more favorable comments.

>>2909147
Abominations or sexy women with arousing faces? See, I have to choose between opinions again.

I think using things like line tool and such can be extremely effective if you know how to use proper coloring to get a more amazing sense of realism but my colors are pretty bad so rather then produce a sort of sketch-up style of art I rely more on these kind of shitty line strokes to give the piece some kind of advantage in uniqueness

Sort of like how Danny Antonucci purposely made the coloring overflow linework to make ed,edd, n eddy feel more cartoonish

I really want to get to that sort of level then any kind of serene realism

It's looking good. You're getting the general shapes of the head, but some of the major values are missing.

Your face is too gray which conveys a darker skin tone and flattens the image. If you blur your eyes, you'll see that it flattens to the background.

You can easily alleviate that by adding more to your values. Add some near whites and some darker grays where they should be. Think about the lighting, what direction it's coming from, what's being hit by it and what's not.

The hair is simple. It's not just a bunch of strands. Think of it as large blocks of value and then add the strands afterwards.

Also, don't be lazy and finish the collar!

here's a paintover

I have no idea which one of you is the original Anon. But I really think that you should study up on perspective. You sorta have the right idea but I can tell that you don't really understand it because you only apply proper perspective to obvious things. All paralel lines will have the same vanishing point, which includes the tiles. And something that should be obvious is that anything bellow the eye level should be pointing upwards, and anything above should be pointed downwards (I'm looking at the doors windows, like come on mang). Also since if you openned a door the top and bottom are no longer paralel to everything else it would have it's own vanishing point along the eye level. (I eyeballed it so it's probably not so accurate haha)

So I looked for a comic artist for a while before deciding I was too broke and finicky.

So I decided to try my hand at drawing again. I used to draw a lot. So I started in trying to do relatively simple figure studies and like the circle's for muscles skeleton type drawings.

I can post the garbage I would doodle from time to time a year ago for perspective but this is where I'm at. I think I got the reference on line-of-action

Trying to get good at laying lines down, seriously loathing my tablet. It's a non-pressure-sensitive, non-screen, 8"-4"(?) piece of shit. Check out the freehand lines I did below my practice, note the "pixely" wobbles and the laggy skips, I swear those aren't me, that's digital interference.

Is it possible to get good and overcome this shit? Or should I punt on this and either buy a better tablet or switch to traditional?
>>
>>2909665
Adding on to this, the fact that where I'm pointing my stylus and the screen are two separate places really makes things harder than when I just draw with pencil, or the few times I've drawn on something nice like a big monitor cintiq. Is it something to get used to, something that's less obnoxious with a nice tablet, or something to ditch ASAP?

>>
>>2909683
You can't work digital without pressure sensitivity.
When it comes to the issue of two separate places,
you should get used to it with practice.
But I'd rather if you did traditional until you upgrade.

Just a quick, dumb question. So, I need a tablet for two things. Number one is reading a Hebrew Bible. I'm planning to learn Hebrew lol, and I need a tablet for it because I don't see that I can read ArtScroll stuff without one, and they make quality stuff as far as this goes. Secondly, I want to start learning to draw. So, the question is, can I use reading apps on graphic tablets? I'm not sure if I'll buy one straight away anyways but it helps to know, I suppose.
>>
>>2909769
If you wanna read, a "reading tablet" is the best and only choice, like a kindle. You can't do much else with it, but the screen strains your eyes a lot less.
>>
>>2909769
Dumb question it is. Only the most expensive graphic tablets have an actual display. If you're willing to spend $2k just to be able to read a Hebrew Bible, well, nice going there, goy. I think even buying a simple graphic tablet for drawing WITH a tablet PC just for your first purpose would cost much less.

i get that you dont want to use the line tool, but using "being unique" as an excuse to chicken scratch is complete bullshit.
YOU ARE SHIT, just try to improve instead of coming up with excuses
no matter what style you are going for, you need to be able to draw a straight line longer than 1 inch

there are a bunch of ways to draw a building using straight lines without making it sketch-up-ish, like in this (shit quality) image
>>
>>2909867
sometimes there are so many bad things about a drawing thats hard to pinpoint specific things. its just bad.

grab an artist you look up to, and put one of their drawings next to yours, then compare. usually walking away from the drawing for a couple of hours/ days makes it easier to spot mistakes, sometimes even just taking a step back.

my biggest problem with your second drawing is the line weight. by making the chest/abs lines darker than pretty much everything else, you are shifting the viewers attention towards them, instead of what matters (the kick i suppose)

oh and you do you have an harder pencil? the one you are using is too soft for this type of drawings. Or even just switch to a pen, its more intimidating because you cant erase, but its worth it.

and i'll probably get shat on by posting this but you should check out Proko, maybe you'll learn a few things from him https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ktfwayByRU

>>2909867
Be careful writing such things, anon. They receive a less than lukewarm welcome here.
To answer your question, anatomy is indistinct and screwed. Google some references of "nude woman back" or look up sketchfab link I left in this thread previously and use other 3d models by that artist. There is literally no part that looks OK in itself, and I don't even mention in relation to others. The worst are her arms, pelvis and hip region, then her feet and seemingly displaced head. The bird guy is completely unrealistic, and if you blame that on stylization, then why do you even want criticism on it? Nobody would be able to tell what is correct in your stylized world.
>>
>>2909903
Please stop projecting the "it's just style guys" shit on me. I never said that or even eluded to it. Didn't even come close to that response. I actually specifically said I want criticism to get better. Telling me "it's bad" isn't criticism. It's purely self serving.

I truly thank you for actually telling me what part of the anatomy looks wonky. Really, truly, sincerely, whatever word I have to use to fellate you enough. But if I hadn't replied with that post neither you or the other kid would have given me anything to work with. So, no I don't need to be careful; my response was not the problem. It yielded the results I desired. The "it's bad" bullshit is the problem.

Now that I know where my most notable problems are and can improve.

So thank you.

That depends on your preferences and task. If your tablet is Medium size or bigger, I suggest trying to use the five-finger grip for drawing general lines from the shoulder and seeing how it works for you. It is essentially a three-finger grip though, you only really hold the pen with the ring, middle, and big fingers (if we don't count the base of the index finger).

Tried to color in sai but it turned out looking like a cheap newgrounds porn game. Oh well back to gesture drawing for now

What do you mean swamp? That's where I live! :(
>>
>>2910264
It does look like swamp, what's with this watery background and random naked trees sprouting from it.

Just a quick question:
Does this look like a male or a female?
And then...
Does it look uncanny and/or alien?
>>
>>2910268
androgynous male due to the square-ish face

it doesn't really look alien. just stylized.
>>
>>2910273
Thank you; I see what you mean. I guess the next milestone is to break out of stylisation

I know, I fucked up the thumb

I tried to give the figure emphasis lines, but I think it backfired and made it come out chicken scratch. I'm pretty new to rendering and clothing, doing both is really fucking hard

>>2909940 here, you replied to me before? I didn't see anything dude. If >>2909674 was you, you weren't responding to me, because that person you were replying to was uploading stuff I didn't create. The only stuff I posted was
>>2909940
and
>>2908331
but you didn't reply to those so I didn't immediately see what you said. I haven't gotten anywhere near full body poses or gestures. I'm just early into Keys to Drawing.

Torso is too short and so is the part of the leg connecting the foot to the knee, iirc both parts of the leg are the same size. If you want your figures to be out of proportion, like you've made it your style or something, that's cool, but you're going to have to step it up or all your drawings will be terribly uninteresting.

colors are pretty appealing from the thumbnail desu
her expression and pose are very bland though, and the lack of detail on the hair is very jarring, it looks unfinished
also make the moon a larger part of the composition, it's distracting
