Hi guys, I will probably get some hate for asking this here, but I've always been torn between working graphically and painterly.
As such I really love doing oil paintings, But I also really like screen printing, but it's hard for me to do both. I really want to focus on just 1 of the 2 so I can actually start getting a name for myself and become an expert rather then a generalist.
what do you guys think about screen printing?

Do both, don't be a bitch.
If you are an expert in drawing then painting, sculpting, screen printing, etc, are all just crafts with their own idiosyncrasies.
If you want a name for yourself make good work unlike anyone else's consistently.

I already have a main occupation, so this would already be something I would do on top of my other work. And of course, fundamentals could be applied to every medium. I just look up to people who can stick to something and be the best at it.
why do you think it's better to focus on both rather than pick one?

If you just look up to people who do one thing then your mind is made up, flip a coin or something.
Ask yourself if you prefer to work emphasizing shape or value/form- that's the essence of what you're after, right?
That's a difference in philosophy, I guess. You can throw out "jack of all trades, master of none" garbage, but then you're saying you can only do one thing with your life and work. So, go for it.
I'm just saying, there's really no good reason to impose arbitrary constraints so you can feel comfortable with your identity as a painter or printmaker.

I agree with the other anon that you can just do both. If you must choose one then pick the one you like more I guess. If you want to "make a name for yourself" though doing screenprints will be easier since there is less competition there than in oil painting.

In terms of money, also ask if you want to sell volume for low, or individual for high. A printing setup can be pretty space-intensive, whereas with painting you can do it in a fairly small space,- to some degree.

why not combine them? I picture the end result looking something like pic related

Also, you're being a bitch. you have computers, the internet, libraries, instruction, so much information and capitalist excess and you're saying with all that you don't think you can meet the standards of some dude born in 1860?

Good luck with hand embellished prints if you don't practice painting. Look at James Jean, he's doing custom embossing for his work. Multiple disciplines will only serve to benefit you.

The dude from 1860 has been doing this shit for way longer and the work he did were commissions and thus his main income, whereas I have to grind some shitty digital paintings to pay my rent.

Can't hold all that fruit?
>>2903305
source on the bottom pic? did you make that?
>>2903335
Are you going to die soon? If not you've got time to do both, you should do what you want when it's a hobby.
