how does one obtain good taste?
is there a way to train it?
>>
You are born with it.

No.
>>
>>2900595
so you cant study people who do have taste and learn what they did?
>>
>>2900599
You can, but that doesn't give you good taste.
>>
>>2900593
I think you're rather looking for how to make good composition, how to make eye-pleasing art. Read up on that.
>>
>>2900606
thats what i thought it meant.
but combined with subject matter maybe?
>>
>>2900595
no you are not, taste is always changing
you can't force yourself into "good taste" tho
>>
>>2900593
Nope, bad taste anons can look forward to being at best a Boris Vallejo, Thomas Kinkade, or Noah Bradley.

Start watching more good movies and art and get out of your comfort zone.

Do you want to know about how to make a good composition? I wouldn't mind helping you. I'm pretty bored and I have good taste.
>>
>>2900749
i have read a few books (framed ink, and some vilppu videos on it) on it and learned a few things . sure i would like to hear it.

>>2900741
i have seen lots of good movies and learned some stuff from that as well.

>>2900702
i try not to do nerd shit (like fan art) most of the time. and do you consider figure drawing porn.

i just saw someone mention taste to someone in another thread and got to thinking about what it means and all that. can you define taste?
>>
>>2900751
>a few books on framed ink
>vilppu videos

Alright. Do you know what a proportion is? Have you ever measured the proportions of shapes, color, and value in a work of art?
>>
>>2900702
this can be said for so many artists, should be like rule 1 of how to get good
>>
>>2900593
>how does one obtain good taste?
have no sense of humor
>>
>>2900764
yep. i know about proportion and shapes. and i know value but not much about color. i know a few color scheme types like analogous and triadic and monochrome but thats about it.
>>
>>2900764
i have been doing more study of color though recently.
and i do analyze works of old masters i like.
>>
>>2900751
>i just saw someone mention taste to someone in another thread and got to thinking about what it means and all that. can you define taste?
I made that comment, I never put it into words, but I guess an innate sense for whats fashionable/ahead of the curve vs what's passe. Being keen to aesthetics.

You can map the practices of literal fashion (as in clothes you wear) broadly to other industries/arts, i.e. industrial design/architecture/graphic design. It doesn't mean everything needs to look like its from 400 years into the future hunger games shit. There are timeless looks, utilitarian, throwbacks. Conversely, objectively ugly styles/fads/knock offs. (bad taste?)
>>
>>2900768
why?
>>
>how does one obtain good taste

With proper cooking and a bit of salt
>>
>>2900593
Good taste doesn't exist.
Respected taste comes from knowledge and understanding of why you like or dislike something.

And if you are actually talking about skill:
Get back to them fundies, faggot.

But Anon, art is S U B J E C T I V E. It's not about finding some sort of universal sense of absolute beauty, it's about expressing yourself at its fullest, is about being brave enough to dig into your own essence and then project it on a visual medium.

This is good advice.
>>
>>2901381
"Don't just focus on nerd shit and drawing porn" is probably more accurate than "just stop".
>>
>>2900593

Yep, there's a way but it's a dangerous road that could break you and change you forever. LSD or Magic Mushrooms. You'll see the world with new eyes, learn to find beauty in the little things, and that is in part, what good taste is made out of.

Shouldn't the pelvis be a bit closer to the ribcage or am I tripping
>>

Draw it how you think it is, let me see what you mean.

>>2901718
Cba I've just heard (from Charles Hu) that the distance between the top of the pelvis and the ribcage is like the same distance as let's say the bottom of the chin to the base of the nose.
>>

>>2901768
shit, it's true, the pelvis is too far from the ribcage.
how could i miss that

>>
>>2901309
when have you ever heard a funny joke that was in good taste?
>>
>>2900593
Read & learn things outside of art
Talk to people with different taste to you
Think about WHY you like the things you like
Don't ever assume you've got art "figured out"
>>
>>2900702
But Kim Jung Gi draws a lot of porn...
>>
>>2902173
But he doesn't only draw that and even when he does he does a lot of stuff including the porn.
>>
>>2900741

>>2900779

Sorry for taking a couple days to respond, I've been away.

Alright, first, I'd like you to show me what your studies of proportion actually look like so I can get an idea of where you're at in your analysis, what kind of measuring you're doing and how much of it.

I'm going to get flamed for this but color is not as important as proportions. Proportions are essentially what create what are essentially illusions we call shape, color and value. That is why they are so important to understand.
>>
>>2900593
Aesthetics are completely personal, what someone finds pleasing or tasteful another person won't. Concentrate on what you like, don't be a fag.
>>
>>2900593
you already have good taste
the problem is becoming skilled enough an artist to represent that taste to its fullest

This is a book about how to develop your taste.
>>
>>2903274
Well fucking said. If you can tell your art is shit and you seek to improve, you have good taste already.
>>
I think it's partly something that you are born with or maybe is formed at an extremely young age, you simply will be drawn more or less to certain things. BUT, taste is also not a completely static thing and your tastes will change over time gradually.

In my opinion it is possible to push it consciously in certain directions or to sharpen it. I think it involves exposing yourself to more things and being open about stuff rather than being closeminded. Instead of saying "I hate all art before the renaissance" spend some time looking at different artists who did work before then, different cultures etc and read about the context of them and what their goals with their art was and why they did it the way they did. Maybe you will still not like it or maybe you will like a select thing here or there and it expands you. I think it's also good to be very self analytical and try to understand WHY you like something. Is it simply the subject matter? is it the style? if so, what about the style attracts you to it? Trying to understand the specifics of your taste will help make you more discerning, and may help you to develop things further.

When I first started out I assumed that my tastes would "refine" and get narrower and narrower. While my tastes are more refined in the sense that they are more specific and I understand it better, this actually has broadened what I like rather than reduce it. I also don't treat my tastes as black and white anymore, but shades of grey. I have learned to like pieces for parts of it rather than dismiss the entire thing because of some other part.
>>
>>2903274
eh, there are technically skilled artists that make very poor aesthetic decisions. Work with any sculptor who doesn't really enjoy design and you will find this true. Some guys just want to specialize.

Please stop being dishonest with this feel good shit, it does no favors. I think it turns people into generalists that otherwise would enjoy a niche.

For instance not every musician needs to be an artist, you can get paid more as an engineer or session musician and find it more fulfilling if thats your lane.

>>2904259
>there are technically skilled artists that make very poor aesthetic decisions

I don't think it's just because they specialize. Some people just have awful taste or are completely ignorant of certain concepts in art that would improve their work immensely (ie shape design or controlling detail density). Given how bad the taste of the general public is though someone with garbage taste can still become successful in their career.
