I honestly think you can learn more from studying a good drawing when it comes to markmaking and values than a photo.
>>
>>2901120
Your reasoning is fair but surely that would be aided by being able to compare it to what the artist was drawing in the first place - You want to start learning the what and how of simplify forms and to really understand that you'd need to see what the original artist was basing their image on. I also think a big part of learning to capture an image revolves around going through the process yourself, not copying someone elses notes.

It's not that bad anon, that other person is just teasing. You are very close to have a nice study, you just have a few proportions that you got slightly wrong and it changes the impression of the piece. Double check all your alignments and measurements and if you fix that it will be a nice study.
>>
>>2903746

This. Seems like you got rendering now nicely, just focus a bit more on your angles and proportions next time. Gonna make it.

>>2900949

This is a good start anon, you got the basic shape/values put in. But you need to make sure you variate your tones and edges. Edge control/variation and tonal variation are two fundamentals that you must consciously be learning. Attached is an overpaint and I hope it helps. Its just trying to show you a few pointers on what you need to work on.

Your proportions aren't as tight as they could be.
Values aren't that accurate.
Edge variation/control needs more work.

Hope that helps.

so many hue shifts ugghghhgdsiofolifgds
I give up
>>
>>2907162
What are hue shifts
>>
>>2907164
It's when the color goes slightly orange, or blue, or pink and you gotta go to the color picker and try to pick a color that's not too orange, or blue, or pink.
Skin and the painting has tons of subtle hue shifts. You have to create a balance between capturing these shifts while not losing color cohesion of the overall subject.
>>
>>2901324
Not the same anon, but I agree with you. There is still merit in studying drawings because after someone gets past the fundamental concepts (light logic, value scales, structure, etc) they need to learn technique. After all, what good are mastercopies for then?
>>
>>2907090

no im not vetyr.
>>
>>2907162
You're missing a lot of yellows. I think maybe you are trying to copy the hues without understanding why they are shifting? Like there is a fire behind her, which is changing the scene a lot. You put in the background as a flat orange colour, but the background is more varied as you get to the flame it is yellower and then there are some shifts in the background on the right etc. Once you put in the fire properly you will see how it is lighting the skin and causing those strong yellows and oranges in it.

I think you should spend just a bit longer on it instead of giving up.

Over the past couple of months I've just been drawing shit and keeping it too myself.

Figured I'd learn faster if people are pointing out specifically why my stuff is shit.

So here it is.
>>
>>2908269
I just realized how shit the picture quality is...

OHHH well
>>
>>2908269
Hey! So you're doing good with messing around with values and at trying to get a proportional face and such, keep at it! I'm gonna suggest:
-Try to draw a portrait with only the essential lines as a practice, you're falling into a feather stroke/chicken scratch hole and that isn't good
-Structure, to make your faces "work" gonna bring in Loomis - try his method (sorry) but also practice doing studies of planes of the face (simply googling will bring up what I'm talking about) bringing planes will definitely boost your art.
Good luck dude
>>
>>2908269
Pay more attention to proportions. You've made his face a bit narrow, his nose too wide, his lips too large, his hair too tall etc. Whenever you draw anything, look at the reference and see where that point is in relation to other thing both on a vertical and horizontal line. By comparing to several other points you can place it correctly.

First time crosshatching an entire drawing carefully. This shit is tedious.
>>
>>2908989
You got to stop zig-zagging. If you thought doing that was tedious, try doing it properly. If you lift your pencil off the paper after each stroke your work will look much cleaner and nicer.

Also be careful about the direction of your lines.
Some of the lines on your banana make it look like the perspective is off where it isn't.

Instead of arbitrary strokes, or lines following the suggested direction, try uniform strokes for the whole image.

Like, do a whole pass vertical, just missing out the highlights, then a sideways pass deepening the detail, and so forth.
>>
>>2908269
Dude, this is so fucking terrible I can't tell if you drew it ironically.
>>
>>2909018
It's pretty good for two months progress.
>>
>>2909005

Thanks for the advice, I will try this! Also, do you think a finer tip would help? I did this digitally on an ipad and I found it quite slippery. Should I just stick to traditional pencil and paper?
>>
>>2909024
I don't want to be more rude than I am being, but no. That is one day's progress. I originally thought you were someone starting out today.

Okay. I look at it agian, I do see some neurons firing. But this isn't just some fucking paint by numbers square peg in square hole type shit. Raise your standards please.
>>
>>2908305
>Structure, to make your faces "work" gonna bring in Loomis - try his method (sorry)

I've been putting off Loomi, Right side of the brain, etc. out of pure laziness. THAT CHANGES TODAY.

>>2908306
I'll try too make use of more guidelines, thanks for the advice.

>>2909018
I'll make you proud, internet person.
>>
>>2909028
Whatever feels comfy for you.
If you plan to work mostly digitally in the future, it's worth getting used to the slipperiness.

When I used to do a lot of cross hatching, I just liked using an ordinary bic byro on heavy paper. I think a bic medium, plus a bic 1.6 for darker areas. Tried out a bunch of art pens and stuff and none felt as comfy. Oh, and a Fischer space pen for fine details. I have a quite heavy hand so the rigidity of that pen made it easier to go light.
I don't like pencils for hatching, you can use different pencil effects for shading that make a bit more sense, and pens look more crisp. You can easy get light enough with a biro to sketch a first layer that you won't see in the final product.
But just experiment and see what you like.

>>2909029
It wasn't me that drew it. Most artists draw their whole life, and at some point start to draw seriously and then make quick progress. Someone honestly starting from day one will not be able to draw a straight line, let alone a likeness of a person. Going from zero to that in two months is great. It still SUCKS but progress wise, he's doing really good.

There, took me a while. It was interesting and quite meditative to try the uniform strokes. Not sure if I like that I had to break up the strokes into smaller pars tho, but the canvas was large and my hand quite unsteady. Still better than the original. I thank you anon.

Verb[edit]
variate (third-person singular simple present variates, present participle variating, simple past and past participle variated)
(transitive) To alter; or vary; to make different.

Literally five seconds of googling.
