It is important but not necessary.

Art, competition, and the pursuit of knowledge are the most important things in life for a human. These are things that machines cannot do and if they do, it's a result of humans who have scripted them as such.

Machines can be programmed to perform manual labor. As such, it is a complete waste of human life to do it. Granted, we're still in a transition period where people are necessary to, say, stock shelves in grocery stores and tend farm fields, so on and so forth, but one day it'll all be automated and the creative human jobs will be the only jobs left. Creating art, becoming a master of a sport/game at a competitive level, or working to discover or creative new things.

art is basically glorification of certain things that society values (or that the artist values, and then possibly makes society value as well due to his sheer skill and depth as a human being)

What do you even mean with "important"? If you ask if a society can survive without art, of course it can, it would be like an ant colony, a society build just to survive. Do you need art to eat, sleep, have a shelter, fuck, shit, love and procreate? No of course, art is superfluos, useless.
But that's exactly what it makes it great, it's useless, it has no rational value yet here we are, loving it and pursuing it.
