where the fuck is the artbook thread? don't have the OP template for it since I don't usually make it but let's go.
what are you
>looking for
>saving up to buy

recently got this in the mail, the interview at the end was the best thing about it. doubt it's getting scanned anytime soon, it's like 400 pages.
>>2889695
I was asking me the same, thanks for make the thread.
Anyone has any of the Real Action Pose books?
>>2889695
Is it worth it? I preordered Hyrule Historia at the time and loved it. But A&A seems like it has all the art I've already seen (at least in the pictures I've seen of it).
>>2890139
There are a few pictures not shown ever before, but it's mostly enemy designs from the early games and things like a better look at side characters from Twilight Princess.
The breath of the wild stuff is what sucked the most, as it is no concept art at all, just promotional images we've already seen printed on really nice paper. I'm sure they're saving it for an official BotW Artbook.
I don't regret getting it though, it's pretty comfy to look at how the art progressed through out the series.
My first art book was Warcraft concept art, but now it's all painters, styles, and eras of art. Or museum collections.
Sorry Samwise.

Also, The Art of The Incredibles
Hello everybody, I want to start with the basics of gesture drawing, is there any good book for begginers?
>>2892949

>>2892410

>>2896415
Tysm anon
Yesterday I got most of Kim Jung Gi's sketchbooks in the mail: 2011, 2013, 2016 and Omphalos. Theres two problems though. One, I dont have a scanner, and two I dont want to ruin the pages of the sketchbooks. I'd be willing to scan them if I was reimbursed for the cost.
I dont think cell phone pictures will do these books justice either.
>>2897832
Get our hands on a better camera. If you take good photos with good lighting it's fine. Just do the 2016 and Omphalos too, the others have been done before.
>>2897860
>If you take good photos with good lighting it's fine
I think I have a decent camera somewhere but I'll have to fight to make the lighting good.
>Just do the 2016 and Omphalos.
I wont have too much time this week to do it but maybe this weekend.
I saw some scans of his books floating around but most of them were terrible pictures or partial siterips from the superani website.
>>2890718
used it as a reference a lot a few years back
I wish I kept it in better condition, I mean the inside is fine but the spine and back is all rough
>>2897832

>>2898149
I have a physical copy. It's okay but nothing great. Better off with John Carlson probably.
>>2889695
I GOT THAT IN THE MAIL LAST NIGHT!
Bought the Ghost in the Shell film artbook
It's mostly paintovers and photobashes, but I'm willing to scan it if anyone is interested.
>>2898954
I thought the movie wasn't even out yet, so how is the art book released? What artists are in it, and what do you think of the work they did? If it is high quality design stuff then sure I'm interested.
>>2898965
pre production was probably done a few years ago.
>>2898980
I'm aware of that, but I just found it odd that the book would be released before the movie.
>>2898991
It is odd, but I don't think it spoils anything. Anyways, I'm scanning it, so whoever wants it can have it. Also

>>2899011
I'd be interested. Please post a link once you are finished, thanks.
>>2897866
>terrible pictures or partial siterips from the superani website
Yeah the quality on those is pretty shit. It'd be real awesome if you could scan his stuff in higher quality, or even just take some high quality pictures of it. Thanks for taking the time to do this.
>>2892410
Soon-ish
Here's Ghost in the Shell
https://mega.nz/#!6ZRHXarR!xOHwZu6WbfZhHZ7owpfqvRHrAbV3amISzkqxWI39wo8
Apologies if the quality is a bit spotty
>>2899150
Thanks anon I just downloaded it. Flipped through quickly and I am a little disappointed in the book. Seems to be mostly finished photobashes or 3d, stills from the film or photos of the actors in costume from on set. There's a couple pen doodle story boards too, but there's very little in terms of actual concept work or early design explorations.
>>2899132
You sit on a throne of lies.
>>2899170
Yeah it's a bit disappointing art-wise, but I like to read the behind-the-scenes stuff and the thought process in making the movie. Hopefully there's other people like me who enjoy it too.
>>2899190
It's like 300 some pages
It takes some time to scan all that shit
>>2898954
fuck that movie. just study masamune shirow.
>>2899233
>Study manga
Not going to make it
>>2899249
he did make GITS i bet the people who mad that art book studied the shit out of him.
>>2899027
>>2898067
I don't see any scanners that will accommodate the sheer thickness of KJG's artbooks (read: textbooks) without me breaking the bank or breaking the binding trying to lay it flat or scuffing the pages. I think I'll just figure out a way to set up the camera and hope for time to handle it this weekend. This will be a long project... but I think I may start off with his 2011 book.
>>2899290
Try to take the photos in daylight but not direct sunlight. If you have a room with lots of large windows go there and wait until a nice bright day to take the photos. It will be better than with a lamp. Worst case scenario his images are just drawings so the levels can be adjusted, but you want the photos to be in focus.
>>2899302
Thanks for the advice. I can't guarantee it'll be sunshine and rainbows this weekend then but I'll see what I can do. Also, have these quick pictures of the proof.
>>2899320
Nice, I think a lot of anons here are jealous of that. I own his 2007 and 2011 ones myself, and have a folder with 2013 scanned in it, so am personally interested most in Omphalos.
>>2899337
>I own his 2007
Do you have 2007 scanned? That's the ONLY one I need and I'm content with having a scan of it.
>and have a folder 2013 scanned in it
Of all the pages? Not that siterip bullshit? Can I have it?
>>2899320
Damn. Godspeed anon. Godspeed.
I think 2011 is already up somewhere, are you sure you're gonna take photos of that one. I'd say the most recent one would be more in demand.
>>2899342
No I don't have it scanned and don't own a scanner. The drawings in it are nice but honestly it's obvious that he has been drawing for a decade+ since then and the images in it are definitely a step to several steps below what he is doing now.
And yes, I got a full proper scan of 2013 actually off of /ic/ a while back. Maybe it got taken down since then?
>>2898414
Oh man, I am hearing many good things about it. Please consider scanning it.
still holding out for alvaro castagnet's book... is it just me? i need to know what goes on inside this guy's head when he paints.
>>2899221
Yeah that takes time, looking forward to it though!
>>2899366
Yes please do the Omphalos first. 2007-2013 have decent enough scans floating around.. but 2016 and omphalos are non existent..
Goodluck anon!
>>2899170
>but there's very little in terms of actual concept work or early design explorations.
Of course not, that shit is not meant for public consumption.

>>2900782
Yes - most likely, i think most users of IC have very similar goals in mind when it comes to what is succesful visual communication. But if you are a director or animator, spending 30 hours rendering a shoulder pad is not time well spent when you could flesh out the structure of a narrative or focus on the rhythm/structure of movement from the larger structure of a movie to the smaller sections.
i think.

>>2909750
Yeah reading vilppu, about 60 pages in. Great book
>>2909750
so far I've finished loomis fun with a pencil, perspective made easy, and about 1/3 of loomis figure drawing. currently on loomis head & hands, and another beginner perspective book.
the rest have been collecting dust for at least 1.5 years. but i'm trying to get my shit together this time and take this more seriously. i really fucking hope i go through every book in my collection (about 30-40) before the end of this year. but i know it won't happen.
>>2909713
same here
ordered some nippon artbooks and hasn't arrived in 3 MONTHS and still waiting
>>2909802
I duno if can wait that long. I think Im gonna do that claim thingy on the last few days to get my money back if it doesn't arrive before then..
>>2909754
Barbara Bradley has some good material on it. There used to be some of it online but I think it's gone now. I know she has a book on it but to be honest I never actually have seen a copy of it. I imagine it is good though based on the pieces I've seen online in the past. It's basically the same as the Bridgman stuff except way more clearly drawn, less weird stylization, and more in depth.
Is my art book taste any good?
>>2909906
What's the top right book?
>>2909906
I'm this guy>>2909713>>2909880 one of the two books I order is one in the top left. Where did you buy it from and how long did it take to get to you.
>>2909905
Why is it cheaper and faster to buy from Jp than uk and us. I live in the uk.
>>2909914
Wall of text incoming.
I don't know if the same things are true for UK (import laws may change things), but in my own experience (US) buying from Amazon.co.jp has been faster and cheaper every time.
If you buy a Japanese book on your local Amazon it's oftentimes at an inflated price and shipped at the slowest possible speed (and they often charge for shipping as well). So you're paying base book price + merchant markup + shipping. Slowest shipping is 3+ months typically.
Amazon.co.jp has flat rate shipping, so you just pay book price + shipping and get the fastest shipping possible (DHL Express, usually gets to my house within 1-2 days of leaving the warehouse in Japan). The best part is that if you buy multiple books you only pay an additional $3 per item, so the shipping fee is really quite cheap considering the weight of some books (or if you were to buy a set of several books, that is technically 1 item).
And the final huge factor is exchange rates. Amazon.co.jp is run in Yen, which means the conversion rate tends to favor USD heavily. A 4000 yen artbook would likely be sold at $40.00 or more in USD, but if you order from Amazon.co.jp you get to use the real exchange rate and pay only $36 instead.
If you don't buy in bulk, you may spend a little bit more than buying from your local site, but you'll get your stuff within a week rather than months later.

Wasn't Shirow actually a classically trained artist and then he got interested in manga? It shows. When he doesn't try to make every woman look constantly drenched in oil.
Giannis Milonogiannis was talking about him a couple of days ago about him and it was interesting.

Yeah, more of an art collection than a tutorial book but it does go in great detail at points. If you want a full perspective get his Gumroad tutorial and read the book alongside it. Then you have an immensely helpful tutorial.
