Any architecture afficionados here? I draw characters as well, but lately I've become interested in things like designing houses and public spaces. I'd like to learn more about the topic and maybe 3D model something on my own.

There was a comic called Cerebus the Aardvark that featured a secondary artist who crammed elaborate backgrounds around the Creator's figures. He still is at it,and its a good place to start for another artist's take on architecture.

modern art seems easy to draw but shit like cathedrals has so much detail to it, I just don't have the patience it takes to make them look well.
>>
I love architecture!

As in, real architecture and not that ugly shit in the OP.

Whoah those are neat. Thanks for sharing anon

if you can't appreciate the beauty of simplicity then I don't want to know what you find beautiful, regardless of subject matter, not just architecture

I'm a junior going for my B. Arch, and in my experience computers are good for final production but not for design. If you draw well then draw. It's how we usually begin the design process. Have a concept.

The cool shit about drawing is that you don't have to draw all the details, you just cluster them together where you want your focal point to be and leave the rest.

what would you consider real architecture?

You might want to look up drawing perpsective and horizonlines. A good author is Francis DK Ching, architecture schools use his books to teach freshmen how to draft properly.

Also, Moebius' backgrounds always have really clear perspective lines, his stuff is always fun to look at.

whoops forgot to add a pic of Moebius backgrounds

is there a sticky equivalent for getting good at architecture? like which fundamentals to grind, exercises on rendering, must read books, etc.

the inadequacy of the curriculum at my school was frustrating. and i really need some good new pieces for my portfolio if i want any leverage with job hunting.
>>

I was wondering this too.

If you have a school email you might have access to Lynda.com, free access to all the Revit/Autocad/3DSMax/Rhino/Google Sketchup tutorials.

But if you're thinking hand drawn DK Ching is pretty good. Your school library probably has a bunch of copies. pic not related

just going to post more Peter Mallat drawings

thanks, i'll try this out. a little overwhelming, but it looks promising.

i was wondering if there are any daily exercises architects should do wrt drawing/software/doctrine?

and are these pics you're posting traced over in any way or is this guy just really good lol

Well architects aren't really artists trying to git gud, most are high-concept guys. But draftsmen like the guy above would do daily excercises. He'd probably go to a cafe and draw what he sees out the window for 30 minutes, focusing on drafting (making the perspective clear, focusing on the edges of objects, simplifying things to their basic shapes and forms).

That would actually be good to do, to begin with, after looking up basic perspective skills - if you find a few buildings around where you live and try to draft them simply. These drawings I did a long time ago in first year for excercises where i did exactly that.

I'm not saying they're any good but look at how the edges of the buildings have thicker lines, and the details like windows and so on have thinner lines.

Beyond that if you want to learn software it's really like everything else, just give yourself a project and a deadline and you'll force yourself to pick up the new tools to finish your project. If you haven't already downloaded it Google Sketchup is a good beginners program, and it behaves like any professional software.

When you've got a good grasp on basics you can draw like that guy above, he's been drafting for like 30 years, focusing on architecture only.

All the pics I posted were proposals and unbuilt at the time of drawing. He'd show this to clients to try to get them to buy his designs, so not traced afaik. Maybe he built them in 3D beforehand and traced that but it's not too far a stretch to think he could do this all from his head. Old drafters like him spend a lot of time at school practicing drawing straight lines.

He's a good example of how clean, simple shapes and lines are easier to read, and they're easy to draw too once you get the hang of it. All representational art abstracts what the artist sees, anyway. The skill comes to choosing which lines/shapes have priority.

Anyway GL man, look forward to seeing you post art c:

I just hate this shit so much, I wish I could learn it as I learned drawing mediocre porn.
