tracing is a tool for learning in a closed room with shades drawn. You can understand a lot by tracing since you go over all the important bits. Proportions, details, things you didn't know; You can learn a lot about a subject.

The second unspoken part about using tracing is when you use the knowledge you gained and use it like a reference you know a lot more about. When I do this, I can usually reposition the subject into the view I want more easily, and the details are definitely easier to remember.

Yes it is. But it's better than tracing a rl pic off the internet, and BOTH are better than tracing drawings. The point why tracing is considered bad isn't just le skill, it's originality. If you made a model/posed one, no one has the same image as you one to one. It's the same as a rl model pose in front of you and you take a picture and trace it after.
