How do you honestly know if your art is good?
My parents like my art and they would never lie to me,but I can't fully rely on their point of view. How do I knoooww?

inb4 get followers

Is your drawing level close to this?

if so, you're as good as a professional artist.
>>
>>2885650
are jobs a meme?

been digital painting for 6 years. only did one book cover for 300 bucks...that was 4 years ago.

what the fuck is an art job?
>>
>>2885647
Post it here and I'll give you my honest opinion. Followers aren't necessarily an accurate indicator of skill since a lot of that comes down to marketing, luck, charisma, etc.
>>
>>2885669
i have to draw something new then. I don't want people to know I post on 4chan
>>
>>2885679
Do it, btw getting into conflicts / facing trolls is something you have to learn to handle if you want to put yourself out there.
>>
>>2885647

If you post some work, I'll tell you how good you are.

I've been finding art jobs a lot harder to get these days. Unless you're on social media all the time and you've got lots of industry contacts, it's a lot harder to get discovered. 5 years ago, I got offers every week just from people finding my stuff on conceptart.org (and my stuff was pretty bad). Most of the offers were crap, but I had some amazing ones too.

ok i will. it might not be till tm tho.

If someone you know recognizes it, then you are well within your right to turn the question around and ask them what they were doing here.
It's like that whole gay porn thing

Based on this sketch, I'd say you're at the very beginning of your art journey. You are not very good yet and will need to commit 4-6 hours a day for the next 3-5 years to start getting to a level where you're meeting even the most minimum threshold for competitiveness on a professional level.

Hope that's not harsh. It's a fun journey. Keep drawing.
>>
>>2885964
not harsh. but considering i've been drawing for at least 5 hours a day, roughly every other day, for 6 years makes me feel a little shitty. and i already know ill never be as good at dave repozza or any of those guys. i just don't have that tier in my blood

lol k thanks
>>
>>2885978
Are you learning things alongside practice? Anatomy? Color theory? Composition?
>>
>>2885992
it gets boring after while. had to start trying other stuff/fantasy
>>
>>2885997
Learn construction of bodies and heads. Learn a bit of perspective too to at least get you started.
>>
>>2885978
Are you sure you've been studying properly? I've been drawing for about a year and I'm at about your level. You've gotta change up something in the way you're studying because you're certainly not getting a good return on your investment. You should be a lot better if you've been drawing 5 hours a day for 6 years, try to improve the way you study and practice anon. Not trying to sound discouraging, just don't want you to waste even more time.
>>
>>2886015
no i'm not sure at all. i thought i was going in the right direction. i have a lot of books on color and human figure. lol. fuck.

this is literally how i feel about my art.
>>
>>2886033
It'd be helpful if you posted something more finished so we could better evaluate where you're at but as of now, I think it'd be best to revisit the fundamentals like the other anon said. Try the draw a box exercises, draw a shit load of cubes, keys to drawing, /ic/ sticky etc.

How exactly do you approach learning something? Say you wanna draw a figure or a head? Do you just start drawing a bunch from imagination? Do you copy a couple heads and call it a day?
>>
>>2886038

i break everything down.

when i darw head i see shapes.

when i draw limbs/torso/arms I see the muscle underneath the skin

i break it all down. then it sketch it in roughly.

everything is a shape.

i think i need to practice perspective with figures. like u said.
>>
>>2886035
>tfw me
>>
>>2885647
You know it's good when /ic/ makes it into a meme

>that cup
>>
>>2886033
so there's a really simple baseline level of quality you can get to by not practicing conscientiously but after that you plateau.

honestly your two choices are either to draw for the fun of drawing or draw to improve at the deficit of drawing. that's not REALLY true obviously i mean it's not a binary like that but those are your 'pure' options

honestly your best bet is to learn, get some tools in your repertoire (color theory, perspective, etc) and integrate them into your art in ways that hold your attention.

overall tho technical skill doesn't mean that much after a certain point. your average person can't really tell good art from bad art hence your problem.

overall tho if you're not having fun with it then fuck it dude what's the point if you hate drawing and it becomes your career then you hate your career which is the whole reason you started practicing seriously in the first place. don't do that. that's what stupid people do. don't be stupid

When you start running out of peers to compare your work to. Once you get over the Dunning Kruger hump you start to figure it out.

When you can send a gallery/studio your portfolio cold and get a show or job offer.

When you sell works for hundreds or thousands of dollars without a reputation.
>>

>When you sell works for hundreds or thousands of dollars without a reputation.

No representational artist can do that these days, not even modern masters who DO have a reputation come even close to that.
>>
>>2885978
When people will get that mindless drawing for hours and hours will get you nowhere its a shitty meme that probably came from forums not sure , you have to do deliberate practice , which often is hard and not very fun and is exhausting and it usually takes a very long time to do, key is make sure you are doing things correctly does not matter how long it takes it must be correct and look good , speed will come later once you do it enough.
>>
>>2889461
Some do. Mian Situ, Morgan Weistling, and Howard Terpning come to mind. I've seen Terpning paintings sell for 7 figures.
>>
>>2889461
What? Did you misread that as "hundreds OF thousands of dollars" or are you saying relatively unknown artists can't sell a work for for a few hundred to several thousand these days?
>>
>>2889483
Yeah, my bad, I read it hundreds of thousands.

>>2889475
I guess there are some exceptions, but there are many masterpainters who sell their work for far less. Including big names like Schmid, Lipking, Huston etc.
