sketch = references are used but not really sharpened to be decent-looking; studies

finished piece = something that can be a print and sell at cons

Sketch is thinking on paper, often planning a painting or more fully realized drawing

Finished piece is whatever the fuck you want to call finished, but often it's a more fully realized version of a sketch or sketches
