There's constant talk about "making it" on this board, but how do you define it? It could, and probably does, mean a drastically different thing to each poster. Is it

1. Being happy with the quality of your art? No matter how good you get, there is always someone better, and even the top dogs of the industry are never satisfied.

2. Getting hired by a studio you always wanted to work for? Your boss might be shit, your colleague might be a diversity quota hire who knows jack shit and gets special treatment and you might get worked till burnout, squeezed like a lemon by a soulless corporation with constant crunches and unpaid overtime until all the joy of drawing is sucked out of you.

3. Working a job unrelated to art and just treating it as a hobby, never reaching the excellence you dreamed of, because you are unable to allocate enough time to git gud.

Is there even such a thing as making it? If you think there is, post your idea of making it or examples of artists who made it, let's have an honest discussion for once. Anonymity can be a tool used to open up, not just an excuse to fling shit without consequence
>>
If I can draw girls cute enough that anons are willing to fap to it, I made it.

You know what, I find it very uplifting. Good for you anon, and good luck!
>>
"making it" is a self-perpetuating running meta-gag for unrealistic expectations juxtaposed with the proliferation of amateurish art in the board (which is fine), and the fact that beginners tend to be fixated on technical development and skewed goals/expectations for artistic growth?

but there's also real anxiety about trying to "git gud" *because competition is fierce, niches are innumerable, and sometimes you just don't know what you want out of the field, or if you have *it* in you to be good enough to make a living off of it.
>>
Shit just having a weiner and a pencil you can hold in both hands means you made it, at least that's what it used to mean in America before obabo came out of as a closet president.
>>
>>2879505
Being able to illustrate my ideas on paper without disgusting myself or other people.
>>
>>2879505
For me "making it" means that you are were you want to be with your art.
For some people it might be having a large following on Patreon, or drawing furry porn for mad $$$.
For others it might be getting the dream job at Disney.

For me it's about being the undisputed best artist in the world, of all time, ever. By like x1000.

Where's the fun in putting the bar so low?
>>
>>2879505
It's making it past the art anxiety phase.
>>
>>2879509
u gonna make it brah
>>

Making for me was always about getting lost in my mind, disconnected from reality, enjoying the euphoria of creating something I find beauty in. That's what I love about drawing/music even if I suck at both. Of course, being able to actually create what I saw in my mind is of great importance too, which is why I draw everyday.

It's about contributing with your skills to something that makes people little bit happier int this world and be paid enough so you don't have to look at your bank account before you invite someone for a fancy dinner.

OP here, I thought about it a bit, and I think James Gurney has truly made it. He dedicated his life to art and worked extremely hard. His rewards were: amazing skill, leaving a large legacy of work that will influence minds and make his name remembered after he's dead, created his own world and a successful series of books on his own terms and without influence from some bullshit marketing department, ran a blog and published 2 very good books teaching the craft to the new generation. Oh, and he did it on hard mode: using traditional techniques and raising a family all the while. An exceptional individual. Few can beat that, don't you think?
>>

i wanna be the very best, like no one ever was
to grind the fundies is my quest, to draw boobs is my cause
>>
>>2879505
I just want an art process that's tailored to me.
>>
>>2879696
You forgot to mention he was already rich before all that
>>
>>2879741
What do you mean rich? If he was, why would he work doing scifi covers and dinos for NatGeo?
>>
>>2879696
>ywn be as good as Gurney and hang up color wheels on your wall that you can color pick with your eyes
>>
>>2879743
Being rich doesn't mean you can't love something and do it for laifu anon.
It just means you have life on easy mode

>Working a job unrelated to art and just treating it as a hobby, never reaching the excellence you dreamed of, because you are unable to allocate enough time to git gud.

people have careers that pay good money, many people have reached a level of excellence with their art during their young days. that to me is the ideal dream. you have a steady career and are able to financially support yourself, plus you can draw/paint anything you want in your spare time because you were so passionate about art through out your teens & 20's
>>
>>2879801
Sure anon
They exist SOMEHWERE in this world
But that doesn't make it very ideal
>>
I just want to make a living.
