Because we should not have to make new threads or post in draw threads with our fundamental exercises.
Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

AVOID asking unrelated questions, there is a question thread for that.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

>Thread study: Try to draw/paint the opening or any other following images.
Feel free to post your original works as well if you're trash.

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

I hope you're drawing with your shoulder. I believe it is Peter Han that said nobody can reliably draw a "good" circle in one go. There is no shame in going over the circle twice (or at the most three times but no more than that).

Is it OK to copy drawings for study or should I only copy real references?
>>
>>2877907

Calling it "copying" is a quick way to get /ic/ to shit on you, it has connotations of mindlessness.

Studying drawings is fine, but try to emphasize studying masters (rather than just any drawings you like, it's easy to pick up bad habits from shit artists). Try to avoid heavily stylized works to start. One you've got your fundamentals down and you know what you're doing you can start studying for style.
Generally drawing from life/photo is preferable for understanding a subject, but studying from artists is useful for learning about composition, colour, etc.

Loomis Gives Head -- Day 1.jpg
2MB, 2448x3264px
Day 1 of learning how to draw -- please tell me I suck and how to fix it :)
>>
>>2877930
Forgot to add, this is just me trying to get used to holding the pencil correctly and drawing heads with Loomis's technique
>>
>>2877930
I suck.

You need to draw bigger. Also need to draw cleaner. I know it's hard to draw a circle, but try not to go over your lines more than three times. Also make sure to read more of Loomis, so you actually understand how heads work. Also look at pictures of heads and maybe even your own mirror. Drawing isn't just about drawing, it's about understanding the world around you. You have to think, about what you see, not the three-dimensional symbol that you think you see. Also tell me, why do you draw?
>>
>>2877933
>Also tell me, why do you draw?

Because art is free, and I am greedy. Thanks for the advice, today I didn't *really* dig into Loomis, I was trying to get a feel for my pencil and heads in general -- should I start with Fun With a Pencil or should I just jump into his book on heads and hands?
>>
>>2877937
You should really just read both. No one really sticks to a book all the way through, usually you'll jump. I did, a lot, eventually you come back to Loomis anyways and realize just how great his stuff is. Fun With a Pencil teaches how to draw from imagination and as well perspective. I think there's other stuff too, but it's something that would benefit you. Heads and Hands is possibly advanced for a beginner who knows nothing and hasn't drawn a lot, like at least a month because it requires a great deal of accuracy and just overall knowing how to look at the world.
>>
Blackwings are pretty dope. But not as cool as tombow homographs
>>
>>2877065
This is amazing btw. Nice job of catching the reflectiveness of the helmet. How long did this take you to draw?
>>
>>2877940
I've heard a lot of great things about Loomis -- I'll definitely do some serious studying tomorrow. Which other authors do you think would be helpful for a beginner? I have Nicolaides and Holmes. Also, how long would you say it takes to get 'decent' at drawing for the average person? I'm not asking because I want to get good quick, I just want to know so I can make sure I'm using the book properly.

>>
>>2877951
Beginners tend to ask this question, it's no problem really. Usually if you are consistent, you'll be decent in a year. Most beginners give up or disappear after a month though, so data might a tad skewed. Truthful answer is that beginners are the only people who worry about time, it's not really something you worry about once you get into drawing. From then on, it's just self improvement and that can take any amount of time.
>>
>>2877962
Thanks a lot anon, you've been a real help <3

You fucked up most everything but the stylistic details
>>
>>2877511
>ah I don't what answer I was expecting. I know you're right but I just get so stuck, I have no idea how to push these more

It's more like just following through with your drawing. What is the scene you're trying to set up? It looks like a bath. Is it indoor or outdoor? How dark or bright is it? Where is the main light source? In front? Behind?

All of these will help you to figure out what more your drawing needs. Right now, I'm thinking it could use a bit more light, but it's not really clear where the light is coming from. It looks like she could be in a pond in a forest. If you want a dramatic scene you could set it so the light is coming from behind her through the trees. If you want it more serene it could be coming from above and in front of her. Then you'll be able to add more light and dark to her to make her look more real. Even if you don't complete the scene, you can still just add more tones to her face. Right now it's just very very grey. You already designed the character, but imo, you're skipping the fun part which is setting up the scene.

I mean yeah but the gist of the information provided is that the shoulder is more suited to straight motion, while the wrist is suited for smaller curvy motions, such as letters. I wasn't sure where circles fall. Does it depend on size?

>>
>>2879153

I run out of ink like every week though. I hope I make the switch to digital soon.
>>
So, I recently began doing something like gesture drawings but for heads, forcing myself to draw different heads in 2 minutes each. I've already gone through the basics of the Loomis method and I thought it would be a good idea to get used to the proportions of the head by shitting out a lot of drawings where I mostly lay down the basic foundations and features.
Does this sound like a good idea or is it some retarded bullshit?
>>
>>2879179
It's pretty retarded because Loomis only gives you a rough to follow and actually apply to life or photos. By doing this, you can fill your visual library unless you want to go imagination route then whatever. Do whatever. Special people who go down that route are able to achieve whatever they want anyways. They're not like us.
>>
>>2879169
yeah i have a intuos pad as well, but everyone here said that to start with I should use ink. I can see why after playing with both. the ink skills work with the pad, but the pad skills don't really work with the ink. moreover, i don't know how well you can really learn the basics drills with the lack of tactile feedback and the issue of resolution with the pad (what your hand is doing may or may not be whats actually happening on the screen due to screen size vs. pad size)

in the end im much more interested in digital media, but i totally understand why it's beaten into beginners to use real pen and paper.
>>
>>2879180
I'm obviously doing normal face studies to develop my skills, this is just something like a side excercise to gain mileage at knowing where to place the features on the face and stuff like that.

Your linework isn't okay. Try to actually apply perspective instead of arbitrarily slanting lines. Your coloring looks bad because its basically solid colors with randomly applied gradients for shadow. Although really the biggest problem you should focus on is the drawing, not the coloring.

There's a bit of symbol drawing in here, you might want to fix that. Plus, learning how to measure properly (Ch 3 in Keys to Drawing is a good ref) could also help. I'd reccomend working in black and white to get values down. Also, learning how to color properly with pencils can help bring out depth.

torso shape of a man and pelvis is too high and narrow. remember that the iliac crest is always below the navel, not level with it. navel is always below the slimmest part of the waist, which is where the rib cage ends. looks like you squashed all these in the same area.

you need to study the difference in proportion between men and women's bodies. i'd recommend picking up anatomy for sculptors in the art book thread.

Loomis is pretty much the copying manga/comics work of the time though. You should have just kept doing what you did.

>>2879803
Should I just keep copying every manga character I want until I can do my own character with all the copying I did?

>>
>>2879819

Also you should be doing studies, as in actually sit down an analyze your favorite artists and try to figure out their thought process when it comes to pieces.

Also try drawing shit on your own. It's going to be dogshit at first but keep at it and you'll see gains.
>>
>>2879819
Well, copying doesn't lead to creation, but it can help since you have some basis to create your ideas off of. For example if you wanted to draw a cute imouto, you would remember Kirino and whatever other imouto there are that you have copied and be able to create a design off of that. Composition is fairly difficult, it's almost a case to case basis judgement. Manga is mainly about composition and perspective though. See what they show and how such as when the character is about to do a really intensive punch, see how the artist frames it. Illustrators are good to look at too, like who, lets see. Pretty much anyone on the Pixiv daily ranking I guess. They're all good. Good for using colors too. Copying color styles is a great way to make your work look better quick. Perspective is easy if you don't draw intense buildings. Basically learn how to draw a box from every angle. What more would you need to know though?

This way. Take a look at this for more about grip: http://www.proko.com/how-to-hold-and-control-your-pencil/

Just feel confortable, draw using all the arm and don't put too much strenght holding (the first pic in porko's looks like he is killing the pencil) or against the paper.

I was trying Drawing with the Right Side of Brain last week, I think I'll come back to it or try Keys to Draw later.

Keep going, I'm just trying for a week (~30h)

Been practicing loomis heads about a week. Overall about 7 months.
>>
>>2880094
Nobody responds in the Draw thread. Used ref for the body position/pose but not for the head, hair, hands, face, and feet. Also made the booty bigger and attempted to add lingerie since the ref was nude.

I just tried again from scratch, I like this one more than the old.
But I think I'll try to finish the old one later, to see which is better.
>>
>>2880129
How are you so good already? You paint like Rin anon. You been drawing long? A year maybe?
>>
>>2880130
Since I was a kid, anon, I'm not a begginer but everytime I post in the other thread everyone make fun of my work, so i just think i should stick with the begginers for six months or something like that.
>>
>>2880110
Do more loomis heads. Try to add a little detail, see how it works out. Don't do values yet.
>>
>>2880129
I think the drawing is good as it is

now for the painting side just try to use hard brushes to avoid making it look so muddy and then blend sensibly
>>
>>2879978
What should I be focusing on right now?
>>
How quickly does one go through an art book? I'm reading How To Draw and don't know how many days/hours I should spend drawing lines and boxes before moving to curves.
>>
>>2880148
As long as it takes you, we go back and re-read quite often. You can never master them, so you'll always need to look again and practice to refine your fundamentals. You only need to spend a week on drawing lines and boxes and curves though. Get as fast to actually drawing as you can. That's what you're here for aren't you?
>>
>>2879651
thank you
>>
>>2880151
>That's what you're here for aren't you?

Yes. I'm just not used to the sort of learning that seems to take place in drawing; I'm used to "Learn X. Now X2, Now X3, until you're at Xn and have mastered a thing. Drawing seems a lot less modular.
>>
>>2880158
It can be modular, but most artists find that tedious or boring so we switch quite often. If being modular is a thing you like though, I could probably write something up for you if you wanted. I know it may sound weird to say how art is all about being free and stuff since you'll think about modern art or those "people" on tumblr, but it really is. If you want to draw something, you have a go at it. It may take you a very long time but it's not like you're restricted on time.

Posted in the old thread while the new thread was up.

I almost never render, but I really want to get started, so at some point you just have to jump in. How do you guys render? Anything I should keep in mind starting out?

How do I make a better robot spider?

Learn the draw through method
I think that anon that specializes in it is here and could teach you
>>
>>2880286

that is rhetorical

First you gotta attach those legs on the left to the thorax.
>>
>>2880214
I colour picked the shit out of my first few to get used to the values.
>>
>>2880300
This, it's so difficult to tell otherwise. Value contrast is way stronger than it looks to a beginner. Just a tiny difference in the greys are enough to seem dark grey or white.
>>
>>2880300
>>2880308
Stop painting on white backgrounds
>>
>>2880214
It's also very useful to understand lighting and form, it will make rendering much easier because you can work off your understanding.
