Was Van Gogh really good?
Doesn't really seem that talented tbqh

better than 99% of /ic/
He has a distinct style and had an interesting life story. Personally I don't like his art, but I can understand why he is so well known.
If he was alive today he would be drawing nude anime women for patreon bux.
>>2875304
His style is just so fucking good, he can make the most mundane of objects appear interesting and flowing with motion, I have tried to imitate his style a few times but it is very difficult.
>>2875302
If he were* alive.
he might have been a weeaboo, but he wasn't a sell-out. he stayed true to his vision even when it was clear it wasn't selling.
Yes his style why quite interesting. I particularly like the way he captured mood with color in interior paintings. If you mean "good" as in, super accurate realism, then no. But a lot of people in this thread forget to take into account that these were new territories artist were trying, so that is what raises them to such a high status.

>but he wasn't a sell-out. he stayed true to his vision even when it was clear it wasn't selling.
>he was unable to paint properly so instead of grinding the fundamentals he stuck the the same old failing shit that is now lauded as revolutionary now that skill has become a separate entity from art
>>2875305
always amazed at how artists like van gogh and cezanne can paint something as mundane as a shoe or an apple with such passion and intensity.
>>2875311
did you have a point? he stayed true to his own style and vision way before it was the cool special snowflake thing to do, back when it meant you were called crazy or degenerate rather than unique and genius.
so how is it you think he'd be drawing anime tits for patreon bucks?
>>2875317
Because he was desperate for money and a degenerate loner who visited brothels
>>2875311
> instead of grinding the fundamentals
but he did grind the fundamentals. Not that he was a great technical painter, but his paintings have more artistic value than the majority of his influences
>>2875318
not desperate enough to sell out though. just look at his life. he'd live like a hobo if it meant he could pursue his art, the way he wanted.
>>2875323
>but still waste money at brothels
>>2875324
>"waste" money fulfilling a basic human need
not sure what this has to do with patreon
>Hey guys! Just finished a speed painting on my youtube channel, be sure to subscribe and if you could throw me a few francs on patreon that would really be appreciated! xD
no [extremely generic and uninspired porn artist on patreon] is far better, because [some stupid and infantile reasoning that only matters to me, like being able to draw dicks and breasts on the same person] van gogh would have lik 10 followers if he was alive today, he doesnt even make fanart, lol.
>>2875328
I honestly don't understand this patreon joke. when did he paint anything analogous to pikachu?
>>2875360
The guy was a total weeb. He collected japanese prints and copied them out. He loved the culture.
>>2875370
Yeah but that really doesn't have anything to do with being a sell-out. And interest in Japanese art back in the era of Japonisme was something associated with the avant garde, not being a neckbeard with pleb taste.
His paintings are way more impressive in real life.
I went to the Van Gogh Museum (right next to the GOAT Rijksmuseum) and his self-portraits had so much dimensionality to them. They were also surprisingly tiny.
I saw a huge exhibition of his work a few years ago and was sorely disappointed. Everyone had told me for years that I needed to see them in real life, but when I did they had no more impact than a jpg on a screen.
>>2875566
I don't have a lot of realistic stuff by van gogh, but there are a few sketches that even /ic/ might approve of
this and the next sketch aren't that realistic, I just like the strong style.
a more realistic painting than you generally see
>>2875387
I'm jealous, you Dutch? I saw these 4 in Detroit, the one with the boats was actually fairly large.
>>2875284
I always hates that Van Gogh, I will stick by my belief that it is a fake. Those strokes are too damn nonsensical and have no flow and the color is terrible and straight out of the tube.
>>2875284
Personally i never cared for him much, i mean i like some of his landscape stuff apart from stary night, but i never understood why he is such a big name among the common folk.
example:
Family/Stranger "wow anon you are artist?"
>me "ya, whatever i guess"
> "stranger" like van gough
It makes me cringe more because van gough suffered from mental illness and was a little more nut's for sure.
>>2875611
>i never understood why he is such a big name among the common folk.
He has a very easily identifiable style even to the layman, he cut off his own ear and had a starving artist life that makes him seem deeper and more interesting, and his brushwork is impressive to someone who has never painted.
>>2875610
It's pretty bad for him considering his entire body of work, but keep in mind he made tons of paintings, some of them in less than an hour, so I'm sure (like everyone), he has some lame quickies.
>>2875619
his sad and interesting life story is definitely a big part of it, but even other artists at the time respected him. he had a very unique and avant garde style, and a freshness and "seen" quality to his work (meaning you could tell they were painted by looking at a real object) that still resonates with many people today. also a strong graphic style he brought into the western world from japanese printmaking (like several other artists obsessed with asian art)
>>2875302
How many ppl actually do this that it's a meme?
>>2875284
Yes. He was the first to do his thing and it was unique. Not everything is gold but so much of it is good. Van Gogh himself seemed pretty OK but troubled guy. Story I've heard about his death is that he had really been walking down a side country road when two boys playing with a rifle accidentally shot him. He survived until he got to the doctor and put forth the story that he had shot himself but the doctor could tell he hadn't shot himself. The doctor agreed to go with the story so that the boys wouldn't get in trouble for what was an accidental shooting. Or so the doctor that tended to him while he died claims in private correspondence.
If that last bit was true that makes Van Gogh a pretty cool guy.
