Didnt see one up on the board so thought I'd make one.

Preferably looking for something to help understand the head, bonus points for expressions because I'm really getting stunted on those.

Here's a good one: draw from real life.
>>
>>2874469
Not that anon but I'm op. I do draw from life but there's not a lot of solid resources on doing expressions and I feel weird drawing myself or people I know.

I know something has been posted in a tutorial thread before that might help it "click" with me yknow what I mean bro?

Some people need a different perspective on things to figure it out, there's nothing wrong with tutorial threads so long as people balance it with drawing from life.

But drawing from life isn't the end-all be-all of studying.

Thanks for the honest advice, I feel the same way about still life and portraits, sometimes you just need a little inspiration for that 'click' moment to happen. Again I appreciate it.
>>
>>2874434
How does that make any sense? The mouth shouldn't get less wide if it's being stretched. The side being stretched should align closer to the edge of the eye but the other side should also get pulled a bit too. terrible tip.
>>
>>2874438
Why do digital artists always over-post process? This looked best at stage four or five.
>>
>>2874601
It's totally possible to push a corner of a lip inward.
>>
>>2874612
Because of personal preference.
>>
>>2874537
I dont understand how this works??
>>
>>2874630
It's basically painting the lighting effects entirely separately one by one similar to how a 3d program treats things (ambient occlusion, speculars, local colours etc), and you do it all on different layers then set the layer modes so that they stack into the final result.
>>
>>2874592
No problem. It's how I feel and honestly it's unrealistic to expect people to only study when they draw 100% of the time. Sometimes you just wanna doodle but don't want the doodle to look like shit.

You do you man just don't forget to balance!

Ambient occlusion is mapping the light intensity where it hits the surface. Learn to shade a sphere, box and a cylinder and you should be good to go.
>tools to never be used
There's no such a thing.

The high test meme means that men with high test will go for thicker women because their brains tell them to go to the females with wider hips.
If women have hip + thigh muscles then in turn they will have wider hips.
Better breeding quality.

Legs aren't perfect hourglass shapes. The inside of the leg is differently shaped than the outside due to the muscles.
>>
>>2876971
A bitch with wide muscular legs or obese thighs giving the ilussion of a good waist-hip ratio will not produce a healthier kid than a rather slim woman with an actually good waist-hip ratio.

Like everything ever, it's bitches being manipulative bitches and playing with men's dickbrain.

I thought it was shit from the get-go because those are some really fucking terrible drawings. I guess you'd find them okay if you didn't know how to draw. But it's a valid point, anyone can draw. I don't know why majority of people thinks it's off limits for them.

usually in the stuff I read about perspective, they call the line where the vanishing points lie "the horizon". I couldn't understand how it worked until they said "eye level"
>>
>>2880643
That's because it's called the horizon.
>>
>>2880656
I... know? Can you not read? I said I didn't understand how it worked, not that I didn't know what it called.
>>
>>2876896
What book?
>>
>>2880657
You're the one struggling with basic concepts m8. Merely commenting because your phrasing and putting horizon in quotes seems to imply you believe the word was misused.
>>
>>2880661
I'm sorry but english must be your second language or you failed your literature classes if you think that was implied. Also, many people struggle with such things as perspective as they develop their skills so I'm quite happy I found something that makes it click in my head like that.
>>
>>2880669
Glad you're making progress if it was such a difficulty, but don't get so butthurt after you've accidentally misrepresented your thoughts. I figure it was better to clarify in the event your confusion persisted, but maybe not.
>>
>>2880677
In this case it wasn't because what you said to me was "the horizon is the horizon".

Maybe a good example of this is like saying me saying "They called it a skybox and I didn't understand how it worked until they someone called it a background texture" and then you say "that's because it's called a skybox".

Or maybe a better one would be if I said "They called it reactivity and I didn't understand how it worked until someone called it a instability" and then you say "that's because it's called reactivity"

Oh like you're a fucking meme? Kindly measure yourself up.
Wonder why aliens look fake? It is because they have no golden ratio and are fake as fuck CGI. Even your inferior western cartoons and fucking COMPANY LOGOS have golden ratio FFS. Maybe try drawing a tree branches without using GOLDEN RATIO and see how dead it is.

Oh see that pepsi logo? what about every disney characters? Take anything popular and you'll find the fucking irrational number. It's even in their "confidential documents" and some "patents" Why do they look appealing when they're simple as a young man's scribbles but not really? What about japan's moe? Not that guy but how is it even possible for you to have trouble with the definition of the horizon?? It's literally just the space where the sky and earth meet.
>>
>>2889283
Another anon here... It's not about definition, or knowing what the horizon is supposed to be. It's about truly understanding the concept of the horizon line for yourself and how it influences the appearance of a picture. Defining the horizon line in a picture is about defining the VIEWPOINT of the drawing, i.e. the EYE-LEVEL. Many people could tell you the horizon is just "where the sky and earth meet" but some portion of them would not be able to correctly place the horizon line in their image to match the particular viewpoint, nor could they even maintain consistent viewpoint in a drawing. I.e. they have no idea what is above or below their eye-level/horizon line; making the mistake of drawing objects below the eye-level/horizon as if seen from above, and vice versa.

tl;dr objects above the horizon line aren't drawn as if they were seen from below for no good reason. The horizon line is literally the height of the camera/eye-level, so logically anything above the height of the camera you would see the bottom of that object. This is not understanding that a layman possesses when they think of the horizon.

It's wrong to call the horizon the eye level though because that's just not what it is. The horizon is the space where the sky meets the land. Your eye level is a completely different concept but is related to the horizon because that is how you orient your perspective. Calling them one in the same is just erroneous and misleads people into truly understanding perspective. Consider a camera at 100 ft and a camera at 0 ft, you can tilt the camera and frame the picture such that the horizon is split straight across the middle of the view. The horizon is literally in the same exact place in both pictures. Is it the eye level? No, of course not the actual camera height is the eye level; the eye level is a completely separate and distinct concept from what the horizon is. Perpetuating this nonsense just confuses new artists and conflates two separate concepts for no reason.
>>
>>2894739
It's not about where the horizon is on the screen or canvas, it's about how other objects or things relate to it.
Objects above your eye level will appear above the horizon and vice-versa.
There is nothing wrong with seeing it like this, or at leas, I don't see how it can confuse anyone to the point of casuing any harm to the drawings.
>>
>>2894993
Did you even read what I wrote? You literally just repeated what I said: that the horizon and eye-level are completely separate and distinct concepts. No one is disputing that you use both of these concepts to form perspective. The whole problem was the original anon's initial confusion. The original "I get it" moment for that anon was, and I quote:
>oh my fucking god that's what those perspective things mean by "horizon"
They didn't mean anything! The horizon is just the fuckin horizon. There is nothing to be confused about here. It sounds more like he was confused about the concept of eye-level was which, as we've agreed upon, is separate but related.

Are there any places or textbooks for reading more about the use of this ratio in art? Or anything like it.
I get the feeling that it's the reason I'll see artists draw seemingly random triangles on their canvas to tweak their focal points, and I want to understand the practice better if there's resources on it. I don't see it mentioned in the places I typically look, and most of what I can pull up in a search engine is just introductory stuff.

don't study without purpose. know exactly why you're bothering with the gestures
>in this case it has to do with hands
so make sure that by the end of the gestures you've collected a stronger understanding of how the arms and hands connect to the body given their position and orientation in space with regard to the position and orientation of the body.

If you know what you're looking for, studying from life is should be at least as straightforward as studying science or mathematics.

>>

Within range of motion.
You can place your own hands wherever you want within your range of motion. The arms adjust to this position pretty much automatically. When you move a hand, you don't think about moving your joints separately from the body outwards to reach a point with your arms.

It only makes sense for your characters to be able to do the same.

Also, you can always go and try it out.

just to add to this from experience, do anything that involves extension like the bow pose or cow pose to develop back muscles that prevent herniated discs from hunching over, avoid the flexion ones if you are always in flexion.

Anon, you might be retarded.

I actually think the bottom composition is better with clouds framing rather than using one for contrast.
>>

They just have different purposes. One is more heavyhanded for a quick read. If you're not sold on the idea of clouds as a white shape behind the focal point just look at NC Wyeth, he practically invented that shit.

who's the artist?

But they both look like comic pages or illustrations, where you want the composition to be heavy handed and straightforward. The contrast thing does work, but I just think its a lot less picturesque especially if the tower is the focus.

How do you even learn to do anime shading?

I can shade general stuff like spheres, boxes, etc. But when it comes to muscle, fabrics, leathers, etc. I just can't see to understand how the shadows work at all.

Digital shading/coloring:
>Make sure your painting program is set to whole canvas mode and not single layer mode for fill
>Make a layer for base tones (base color layer)
>Fill shapes with your base tones
>Make a low opacity layer (shading layer)
>Pick an off-black color (navy blue/deep scarlet/whatever fits your lighting)
And then either
>Render shadows by just drawing them in
and/or
>Fill everything with your shadow color and use the eraser to render them in reverse

Then you do post-processing by burning/smuding/etc and making new layers for detailed shadows. There's guides in this thread that have similar and other useful information but this is the general process for any kind of digital cartoon/anime artwork.

Oh and if you mean like shadow placement, just think of where the light is coming from and use lots of references. Light is kinda wonky, but there's a cheat code in realizing everything is reflective (which is why we can even see, everything reflects light into our eyes but at different angles depending on the source).

>>2909079
Yeah I meant more of how the placement would be.

I get it to some degree, like there are certain things that are easy to shade, but when it comes to the human body, my brain just breaks in trying to make it look good, even with just a simple layer over the top of it for shading.

Like take DBZ for example, the way the muscles are shaded there, are so weird to me, like I can't use myself as a reference because the light in my house aren't that strong so it ends up being like 1/4 of me is lit and the rest is just pure dark, which looks rather weird I must say on a drawing, as opposed to the little bit of say light on the opposite shoulder from the light source.

I don't know why, never been good at it before.

Use lots of references like I said, light is one of the things you can pretty much never master because it's such a clusterfuck(especially when you're dealing with more than one source). Don't reference actual anime or manga frames because they use shortcuts to make things look good but not necessarily correct.

Mainly don't sweat it though, you can nail down form and construction without touching on light and color. Just kinda keep it in the back of your mind until you need it.
>>
>>2909096
I feel ya on that. I can draw pretty much fine or replicate any reference when it comes to shading, but doing it from scratch truly is a clusterfuck.

Appreciate the help though.

At least read the replies, man.

If any anons had some tutorials related to oil or acrylic painting they could post, I'd be very grateful

yeah right, because the sky and earth meet is always at the eye level

and if you first language uses the ''horizontal'' word as in ''the whole field of view'', good luck, because it makes perfect fucking sens the ''horizontal line'' is at the ''eye level''

I like these bugemen as a concept greatly.

Are there any advanced guides on perspective, ideally on construction for figures or general shapes in relation to each other?
>>
Im not sure if this is the best place to ask, but does anyone have any CGMA courses on Mega or torrent?
