Not really. Movies are lit by professionals who know exactly how to light a scene, it's gonna be much harder to do dynamic lighting like that with a still life

First you need to learn than you can breake it down.
Like u said movies are "stylized" and colors are specialy prepared so you can't get the whole colors because spectrum is cutout.

And I'm not seing that studying movie frames is bad. But you have to STUDY it ...

i use movie stills to study color, comp, and mood
whenever I'm having trouble painting a scene i'll take a cap of a movie that has a similar vibe and do a quick study of it, super helpful! pic related i suck at dark scenes

Don't be a retard who buys into the meme that sitting outside and doing a plein air is magically the answer to everything an artist needs to do. It's a useful exercise, it's not some miracle fix.

Studying movie stills is effective because - if they're well made - their scenes have been crafted with a purpose. If you want to learn visual storytelling, learning from professionals doesn't fucking hurt. You can learn a lot about composition, color and lighting from movie stills rather than trying to reinvent the wheel with ain heir studies.

The point of studying movie stills isn't to try and replicate the drawing in neutral lighting conditions. They lit it that way to convey a mood, so if you want to learn how to light and frame a composition to convey a mood you're not going to go draw your fucking kitchen sink.

I used that example for a reason, because you'd linked to it.

As I said, LEARN HOW. There is a significant difference between being aware of how to convey mood with light and composition and then using it to make mundane subjects look interesting, and not knowing how and trying. Not to mention it's way fucking harder to find a subject to observe in real life that captures a mood you want than finding a movie that does. That means you might need to find the subject and invent the mood, which is an excellent exercise, but suggesting it as a REPLACEMENT rather than a COMPLIMENT to studying compositions made by professionals is fucking dumb.

I do agree with other anons though that studying film for colour is often a bad idea since they are so commonly colour graded to the extent that like 90% of useful colour information is lost. They are still good to study for things like composition or storytelling (and even for mood), just not for colour. I've studied plenty of movie stills before, and studied plenty from life too. Both are useful.

You sound like one of those guys that are constantly in study mode. You lack creativity and ideas so you sit down everyday and not knowing what to draw you just decide to do another study. It won't hurt, right? And you feel good because you did something, right? And then you become Proko.

I'm not saying that doing studies is bad. Just don't sit in the trenches all the time. It becomes a fucking trap at some point.
