Try not to over-complicate designs, I would say if you come with an idea just stick to the first thing and draw it out without shading or any real standoutish detail. If you're doing digital especially, just draw it out and don't really clean it up unless you really feel like you need too.

Good luck. I would say definetly look at a lot of concept art because a lot is unfinished, and an idea is better than nothing.
