I made some corrections like the angle of the shin, the width of the chest. One main thing I notice is that I made her head huge, maybe it's the forehead.

I have about a 1% skill right now.
>>
>>2865884

>>2865886
Post one of your anime girls
>>
>>2865892
Drawing anime girls isn't my actual goal, though it would be nice. As such I haven't drawn any or have any to show.
I drew this earlier though.
http://is2.4chan.org/vp/1487395324862.png
>>
>>2865890
I didn't do anything set, I just drew a lot and studied a lot and eventually when I went back to draw what I wanted, my skill level had raised. About five hours per day, sometimes more, since I did project based work and had deadlines to meet.

But if I had to say, I did a lot of drawing from life and references. I sought out to understand the world. I have read Keys to drawing and Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain without having done the exercises, however, there's no doubt what I did would be what those books tell you. Such as negative space and iteration.

Although, I didn't draw many pieces to be honest. I focused many hours onto a single piece and erased many times to make sure I got it right. Proportions was one of those things that really take forever to get right. In addition to that, I did a lot of rendering with pencil and in digital. This helped me understand form as it turns in response to light and shadow.

In the end, I guess you say that by building up your basic skills of just drawing and seeing, you become able to draw the things you have always wanted to. It's quite an odd feeling and surprise. I've gotten so much better that I can't even say that I will ever be as bad as I was before. There is one more thing though and it's that you will only become good at the things you draw. This is important. If you never practice drawing sexy anime girls, you never get good at them which is how I'm feeling right now. They're getting better with each day, but even after that month, I could tell it was going to take some work and that's kind of how drawing goes. If you want to get better at something, you work up your basic skills as well as drawing the thing you want to.

Maybe, one very last thing and that's to always give your best. I did that and it got me here. I always strive for perfection even if I don't reach it and I'm sometimes unsatisfied, but to see your end result be something that you've never achieved before is still amazing.

Drawabox lesson 1 would do you good. Grab a pen and do it on paper.

This one right? Paper is kinda difficult for me, as I'm kind of afraid of leaving the house and would have to order it, Is it really that terrible if I do the exercises on the tablet I have?
>>
>>2866016
The reason Uncomfortable wants you to do it on paper with pen is so that you can't erase your mistakes. If you use a 100% opacity brush and never use an eraser tool: you maybe could use digital media

I don't know; I like what you've done with the eyebrows, but that left pupil looks slightly warped. I'd say you don't need to use that many lines, as it does make them look slightly older. Just consider if an area of the face is dark enough to warrant a line
>>
>>2866021
I can work digitialy without erasing, sure. I did that with the "lines and circles" pic I uploaded, thought it would be best to show what comes out after a couple of tries each instead of just deleting until it looks as perfect as I can get it.

Make multiple passes over each circle at first. Stop drawing with your wrist. Follow drawabox even though you do it on a tablet.
>>
>>2866041
I'm reading the "Drawabox" introduction right now. And yes, following them like I would on paper was my plan for it.

I remember when I was a teenager and used to doodle in my notebooks, I used to make a whole bunch of very short and very fast lines over each other and slowly advance in whatever direction I needed because that was the only way I could draw a line that was not ass.

Dang, drawing from the shoulder is difficult, I can do from elbow fine, bit from the shoulder somehow is weird to me and I don't feel like I'm getting a good movement out of it. Could it have to do with my surface being rather small, making elbow movement more "effective" than shoulder?

>>
>>2866159
Hi anon, as first, that doesn't look bad at all proportionwise, but don't just crosshatach like that, it kinda looks bad and doesn't work with the lines you have either, draw the guy with lines only, draw the shadowshapes with lines, and then you can hatch or crosshatch or whatever you want after, I like pulling vertical lines and having them darker where there is more shadow.

my drawings always end up very messy and fuzzy, like, you can barely understand whats going on or how far/close things are...

critique heavily, please

It puts the wheel correctly into perspective. Can't you see that? The straight ellipse is the right shape but it's doing some weird shit.

It's an indication of the "long axis" in other words it shows in what direction the circle is stretched to form the ellipse. If the circle was facing you there would be no long axis since the radius would be equal in all directions.

The ellipse is always perpendicular to its cylinder's axis.

>>
>>2867778

That's something that develops with practice. Line control develops from working the muscles until they are precise. Drawing more often will help that. You also can develop line confidence by making yourself work fast or with a pen. By not being able to spend forever on a drawing and not being able to fix mistakes, you make yourself learn faster. Frame by frame animation is good for this because you draw a lot and you have to work quickly and trust your hand.

You can also deliberately work on it by doing draftsmanship exercises, see links below

The contour under the eyes is too strong. Weaken it! Use a lighter line under the eye, particularly as the left eye gets nearer towards the nose and the right eye goes away. More curvature on that bevel past the left iris, a thicker line for the left eyebrow, narrower in the middle and offset to the left slightly, rotate the lips counter-clockwise at a slant. You've got to spend more time at it, and whenever you feel frustrated: try and pinpoint where you went wrong and restate it. Do not erase, put the new line next to the old line, or else it isn't very informative.

You might not want to take advice from me,
because I'm a hack.

Do you guys think meditating 1 hour a day, trying to visualize or construct 3D grids out of images from memory in your head would help internalize Linear perspective?
>>
>>2867940
No, 3D grids are useless. You need to be able to visualize something clearly from all angles. Just visualizing something clearly from one angle is hard enough for most people to the point people believe it's a talent to think in 3D. You must be able to visualize the lines that make up the object as if you were drawing them with your mind's eye, because if you can do that, you can also draw them with your hands. But can you really remember something from memory and visualize clearly? Likely not, you don't have the talent. Unless you're up for the challenge.
>>

>>
>>2867951
>worrying about degradation
Is this a /beg/inner thing? I've never once worried about it.
>>
>>2867954

>>
>>2867585
The scratchy lines make it look disjointed overall and it masks your mistakes. Try redrawing a cleaner contour over it and then repost.

I'd say just from eyeing it that the breasts don't match. The pose looks stiff, it kinda looks like she's shrugging her shoulders, especially the left. She's also slouched, and with a head that dis-proportionally big it looks like it's weighing down on her short neck.

When you draw a pose like this, think of the character as standing tall. That means that the head is held up high and chin tucks into the neck, the chest slightly curved outward, the neck is naturally elongated and erect, and the shoulders drop down to create a triangular shape from the neck down. The collar bones then are pulled by the shoulders and flatten.

Lastly, the hair is looks stiff. That can be prevented by using long flowing lines to draw it rather than the scratchy lines.
>>
>>2867944
>But can you really remember something from memory and visualize clearly?

Sometimes, the more tired I get the easier it becomes but they tend to be very short lived unless I am on drugs. I find that it also becomes easier if I spent time studying the object before hand.

Why do you say 3D grids are useless? Unless I have the wrong idea of what they are, it seems like they are just exactly what you need to be thinking about to see and understand an object from all possible angles.
>>
>>2867940
have u tried drawing instead
>>
>>2867967
3D grids are useless because there is no set 3D grid. A grid is the way it is because of your camera, which is just your mind's eye. If you understand framing, then you can adapt to any kind of "grid".
>>
>>2867951
I was practicing brick walls and after a while my gestures improved a lot too.
>>
>>2867970

I didn't mean to construct or visualize predetermined 3D grids, but rather to attempt to overlay one on top of the images you can remember from memory. Aka try to visualize a tower you've seen before IRL and then draw a grid on it and see where the vanishing point is, where the ellipses that make up the cylindrical shape of the tower would look like etc.
>>2867970

I do that everyday

The areolas are lighter so i can set them apart from the rest of the boob. It gives them their own slightly raised shape. Also i haven't colored them yet i was just doing the values.

For the thick lines i was probably going to try coloring the lines to match the adjacent skin color then merge the line layer with the skin layer where i can then paint her body edge a bit more.

I've learned there's a difference between thinking that something you've drawn is good and it actually being objectively good. What you perceive as degradation is only your mind coming to realize that you're not as good as you previously thought you were...and at the same time your learning new things. It's a mind fuck and it's messed with me for a long time. The only thing you can do is keep pushing to learn new things. Once you've gotten to a place that you think something is "good" like head, hands, feet, etc....switch to another. Do this over and over and over. Cover every single body part and then do it again and again.

Nice style, but it can't hide the flaws in this image. The face is very off when it comes to the eyes, and the left arm is noticeably longer than the right one.
>>
>>2867951
You're not degrading. You're just improving in other places and starting to see the flaws in your current work. It's stayed the same while other stuff has progressed, so it feels like degradation, because what once was equal is now worse comparatively.

photoshop draws in pixels, not vectors. if thats what you mean.

if you want to see the actual pixels then you have to zoom in far enough. your monitor probably isnt high res enough to see them without zooming.
>>
What is your approach to start a drawing?

I can't seem to find a reliable/confortable way to start my drawings and it frustrates the fuck out of me. Sometimes it goes smootly and others I just can't seem to get it, not only measures, but the whole thing just does not "flow".

Any tips? Should I just restart the same drawing until I get it right? Or maybe move on?

Photoshop is awful for actually drawing. It's great for image manipulation and changing contrast/hue/levels. I tried it. It was like i had palsy. I couldn't make a smooth stroke to save my life. I don't know why it's so clunky...why i cant just choose a color without having to bring up the color picker and THEN hitting OK after i pick a color. Why can't i dock the color picker or have a smaller one. Why is the blending brush shit? Why is there no stroke stabilizer?
>>
>>2868088
You can also find specific brushes that are aliased.

Two other imperfect methods:
Select tool - Select an area and paint inside it, or draw with an aliased brush slightly too thick, select with wand, and then modify the selection size to trim off the outer 1px. You can also select something that is already painted and go over it once more with an opaque brush, or smudge it to cover any antialiasing.

Duplication - Copy a layer over and over, merge, then copy over and over again until even the faintest opacity sections are opaque. It is now aliased.

These two are really only good for something that you've already done with antialiasing.
>>
>>2868087
depends on your goal and the subject. you can try drawing quick thumbnails of your reference to see what shapes work best for you. for figure drawing, you learn gesture

I've been drawing for two months now and I'm still embarrassingly bad. I read the sticky and gone through enough of the books that I shouldn't still be so shit. I hate myself for not improving. I should give up, right? Drawing isn't for everyone, apparently not for me.
>>
>>2868150
aaaaaaand another one bites the dust

grats on being a statistic rather than having some discipline
>>
>>2868151
I don't know if I want to quit. I've put in so much time trying to get not horrible, but progress is so slow it's demotivating. If someone tells me, "yes you're not improving fast enough, give up," I will give up. If someone tells me this is normal, it's possible for me to get better, I will stick with it. Drawing is causing me so much sadness and frustration that I'd rather leave it up to someone else to choose whether I stick with it.
>>
>>2868087

I tear my hair out before I even begin.

And every night I do it again and reflect that my life is nothing and that I am still terrible and without merit as long as my art remains to be shit.

It keeps my blood pressure up.

1. As long as you're putting in 100% genuine, hard-working effort, don't let anybody tell you that you're "not improving fast enough."

2. You're putting graphite lines onto paper. This should not cause "so much sadness and frustration."

3. If someone tells you to jump off of a cliff, would you do it?

You don't strike me as a very independent person. Are you a neet? Do you live at home? At this point if you have this sort of attitude towards art (and I'll take a guess and say a lot of things in your life) and you find it difficult you probably will still be frustrated for a long time. I really don't like telling anybody that they won't make it because everybody can - it's more of an issue if they have the willpower. But you need an immaculate attitude change if you want to be anywhere anytime soon.

>>
>>2868154

If you want to be good at it, you're going to keep trying.

I've been doing this for decades and I'm still shit. Been thinking of jumping off a bridge or under the wheels of a bus.

But, really, there will be some kind of benefit otherwise you wouldn't have been interested.

And you literally might not give as much of a shit as you think. I don't know what your intentions are behind learning. Could be anything.

Anyway. Let's say you are using every thing you've learned from the sticky's resources. I'm pretty sure you aren't because it takes a lot of time to use them properly. You "know" them but you can't use them.

The process dead ass takes time. That's the end of it. No one knows how long it's supposed to take each individual person. For me? I'm authentically stupid and it's taken my whole life and I still can't do anything.

Because I did things wrong.

But you've got a good chance to do things right and to take your time. Don't worry about this stuff. It's frustrating and hopeless and empty, but it isn't impossible.

Sometimes it's even fun.

You really didn't read the sticky, did you? Even then, I don't know why you wouldn't even attempt to search up construction and figure drawing.
Also, your line quality is shit. Are you not drawing from your shoulder?-- Have you never tried any drawabox line practices?

Good job with the other drawings, I love the gesture drawings!

Tone bar is good, but I unfortunately a cross hatching bar doesn't work that way. What I suggest to make it simpler is fill the bar completely crooked hatch marks, then the opposite direction to go darker, then another direction, and repeat. I wish there was a way to explain it easier, hopefully you understand

Good job, keep going!

This is rendered well, I think the main issue is the chest and shoulder area. The hips are pretty small too, but with some correction of the wideness of the chest, and maybe making the hips a bit wider, she may look proportionate.

Nice work!

What?? 2 months of work and you're whining? Some of us have been drawing since we could hold a pencil. Imagine my surprise when after all those years, I realized how little I knew about drawing. Even though I was pretty good at being a copy machine, I decided to basically start over and learn everything I can.

Yeah, it's not for you if you decide that after 2 months you're done. Drawing is laborious and painstaking. There is no shortcut. You have to be able to draw everything you want to see on that paper. It takes a lot of time and tedious effort to hone that skill.

Believe it or not, some of us actually enjoy that process of making mistakes, learning, and improving.

Ask yourself why you want to draw. If you decide to stop, you'll never learn. Simple as that. Then see if you want to keep trying.

Looking at that drawing of yours, I really don't think you've put enough effort into it. People are telling you to read the sticky because it looks like you didn't apply any of what's taught there.

For a beginner, you're drawing is actually not that bad. You've only put in 2 months. Imagine what you could do with a lot more time. Don't think of it as a race either. But remember that if you work hard, study, given time you will be much better than where you are now. You can't help but improve if you really try.

There's nothing stopping you from continuing to practice.

>>2867965
yeah you're right about the scratchy lines part, I try not to but my tablet has a really smooth surface so it's hard to control. I think I get what you mean, as in the shoulder is flat at best and if they are raised above that the person is standing stiff or intentionally raising them.

thanks for the feedback guys
>>
>>2867590
as a beginner i recommend paper. Rough paper is a lot easier to control your lines with and you don't have the temptation/luxury to digitally edit mistakes, like undo button or fixing stuff with photoshop.

That doesn't mean ignore digital though, just discipline yourself not to "cheat", so to speak.

your line work is too scratchy and you use too many straight/perpendicular lines. Box it out with some perspective, the chest juts out and isn't face on. The face isn't straight up and down, fix the center line. Linework is too scratchy, also the head looks like it's drifting off the neck, the neck is off center to the body and the person's right shoulder is too big.
>>
>>2868150
Don't be a whiny bitch, draw some references until you get used to the shapes and can spot when you're fucking up. his left leg is too skinny and straight, left shoulder too long and looks raised too high for his left arm. Right arm too skinny and long by the staff. face seems too big but I might be wrong, you're drawing too much of what you think should be there, not what you see; dem foots, dat skipping on leg day, those fingers. None of that bollocks with not being cut out for it, git gud fagit
>>
>>2868204
Her right knee looks like it's not facing the viewer, should also have a harder line on the torso showing start of the twisting hips, left arm is curving outward in your pick, opposite to reference. The face looks squished into the head a little like you started the shadows too far to the right. The right hand is a mess but I doubt it matters. your toes curve down more than the ref. and the right foot should point more towards the left. The crease where the thigh meets the hip should curve on the body a little more. The left shoulder should have more well-defined shadows and might be slightly too thick. Over all not too shabby, I'm a nitpicking whore if you couldn't tell.
