Yo, D/ic/kweeds. Should I buy Drawing on the Right Side of The Brain?
I heard it was THE book for beginners to start improving their drawing skills, but I also heard that its super overrated and is actually shit.
Can you lead me in the direction with your advanced pencil snobbery and potentially save me £16.59?

A lot of it is philosophical nonsense, I'd say about half the book actually teaches you. But the half that does teach is valuable to beginners. If you don't want to spend the money there's always loomis fun with pencil, you can find it for free online.

the book is for absolute beginners, pic related is an example of someone that took Betty's classes and improved in like a month or something. so if you draw like the one on the left here, it'll probably help you improve. but if you're already pretty decent, then it'll be a waste of time.

Im doing some tutoring and just covered this book/symbol drawing a couple days ago, here's the short hand take away from it. -
You can find a pdf online, don't bother buying. It's probably in the book thread or something. Ignore the first 40 pages, skim through the pseudo science lecture shit just to get an understanding of what she's talking about and what symbol drawing is. Do the exercises up until she starts teaching portrait drawing. I'd skim over these lessons and do any you feel are beneficial, but you will be doing a lot of portraits as you learn to draw anyway and her method is pretty meh.
Mostly the upside down drawing and using that to learn to focus on shapes rather than symbols is what you want to get out of the book.
