every time
>>
You don't have to animate concept art.
>>
>>2847887
it would probably be easier to animate in a sketchy format than to have to make it go through clean up and color department.

You're right, what an awful idea it is to be stylistic with animation.

Why yes. Yes I do.
>>
>>2847890
It is. That's what they did during the xerox era to save money.

I think it makes the animation look more organic and alive. Too bad everyone's scared of a little grit these days and keep obsessing over polished soulless bullcrap.
>>
>>2848047
Are we now talking about some imaginary "good old days" and not the OP image anymore? Disney has always had very clean lines in their finished products and Bambi sure as hell isn't some modern over polished soulless bullcrap.

>Bambi's realeased year: 1942
>Robin Hood's released year: 1973
jeez I wonder why
>>
>>2848078
It's not about age retard. By Bambi Disney had already established their principles of animation by large.

Robin Hood looks better than more recent shit as well, for example the Great Mouse Detective.

It doesn't hold up as well to the renaissance shit though but that is simply because of budget reasons. A xerox-style movie with a Disney renaissance budget would've been fucking glorious.
>>
>>2848067
>>2848087
Maybe, but I think you're paying too much attention to line quality and type, rather than animation style. Bambi's characters aren't anthropomorphized at all, whereas all of Robin Hood's characters are. Anthropomorphizing always makes things more appealing. Why do you think furries revere Robin Hood and not Bambi? The appeal of the "sketchiness", however, is purely subjective to the viewer.

As a side note, bambi wasn't made in black and white because in the '30s is was much easier to make animation full color than live action film, so a full color animated film was a bigger draw back then.
>>
>>2847867
Are you honestly surprised concept artists and key animators are better than junior animators in the in-between department?
>>
>>2848067
Is that even the final lines or just a pencil test? I don't remember Robin Hood looking particularly rough and sketchy.
>>
>>2848156
> but I think you're paying too much attention to line quality and type
I'm not. Line quality and type is of high importance to the outcome.

>The appeal of the "sketchiness", however, is purely subjective to the viewer
Except sketchiness is objectively better. The best artists take full advantage of much life and character a bit of texture and/or spontaneous, imperfect lines and strokes give their artwork. OP's pic is a perfect example of how much of the appeal gets lost when you go anal about turning every line into a solid sterile boundary between shapes and blocks of color. For some reason the general animation industry never got over this idea of "perfection" that any good artist will work their way through at intermediacy.

Also
> Bambi's characters aren't anthropomorphized at all
this is wrong. They talk, make human facial expressions and are mentally human. Anthropomorphism extends beyond wearing clothes and opposable thumbs you know.
>>
>>2848250
I posted this particular gif to emphasize my point.

Through the xerox process a lot would get lost but you can still catch much of it in the final version.

>>

You're retarded, they're mocking you because you think it is easier. It's not.

You're also showing how little you know by calling it 'stylistic' and not elaborating on it's expressiveness and line motion.
>>
>>2848444
Judging from this: >>2848316
Doing sketched animation is not any harder either. It's on the same level of work. So to state you can't copy the concept art aesthetic because it's harder is retarded.

yer on /ic/, mate. everyone on this board is retarded when it comes to art, including yourself. people don't come here because they're good or know what they're doing, they go here because they have so few followers on social media they literally can't get people to comment on their stick figure art.
>>
>>2848695
Do you think having to go through rough -> clean up -> color stages is somehow faster than just rough?

Most CalArts students don't even bother doing clean line art for their short films because they don't have the time. They're intentionally sloppy and sometimes sketchy because they have tight deadlines.
>>
>Get an animoo studio production artbook
>hate the studio internally for ruining the concept art with the anime
At best, they muddy up values, which ruins the beautiful shots they planned out. At the worst, you get QUALITY

The Aristocats and The Jungle Book were both xeroxed and I thought they looked pretty shit
>>
>>2854919
The Aristocats was a boring movie but you're crazy if you think there was no good animation in it.

The Jungle Books shits on any current CG film in terms of character animation and art direction, easily.
